Numerous copyright violations stemming from this event[edit]

@Ptinphusmia and James Moore200: Thank you for organizing this editathon. Please ensure that all participants are aware of the copyright policy. Numerous copyright violations have been added to articles by multiple participants and it is taking a lot of time and effort to clean up, remove, and revision delete. DanCherek (talk) 23:04, 26 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@DanCherek: Thank you for bringing this to our notice and they are duly noted. I truly apologize for this incidence and know that we will do everything we can to tackle it. We plead for your patience and understanding while we do this. I have also responded to this on the ANI thread on the topic. I'm also happy James Moore200 who is coordinating the ilorin event have noted this too. Again, thank you for your kindness. Ptinphusmia (talk) 18:37, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

DanCherek

Thank you so much for reaching out and for letting us know this on time. Although few of the editors have been blocked due to their IP Address (I would like to pleas kn their behalf), they are mostly newbies, the training is still on till Tuesday so it's really surprising the way the complaints are so early. The issue will be addressed on the communication channel.

Best regards,

James Moore200 (talk) 12:01, 27 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the response. I believe in the case of one blocked user, they had been warned three separate times about copyright text that they had added to at least 14 articles, and while they saw these warnings (they even clicked the "Thank" button on one of mine), they were not responding to them at all or showing any signs of stopping the copyright violations (i.e., they were continuing to add copyright text at a very fast pace), so a block was placed to prevent this. They should submit an unblock request demonstrating that they understand the copyright policy. I appreciate that you will discuss this with participants. This module designed for WikiEdu participants may be helpful. DanCherek (talk) 13:35, 27 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Edit summaries[edit]

Many of the edits from this meetup are using the edit summary #W4HRNG with no other text. While it may be helpful to tag edits from this meetup with this hashtag (I have my doubts whether it is helpful, but it may be), it serves no purpose to the community at large if this is the only content of the edit summary. I think that it is helpful to add this tag to the edit summary, so that interested people (such as the organisers) can track which edits are from this meetup, but it is certainly not helpful to make it the whole summary. Phil Bridger (talk) 18:17, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@WikiDan61 and Phil Bridger: Thanks for pointing all of this out. They are duly noted and will share this with the participants.Ptinphusmia (talk) 18:39, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Tell people how to edit properly, or stop doing this[edit]

I have given a half-dozen editors warnings about WP:OVERLINK and WP:SURNAME violations, two of which are about to be blocked for continuing their disruptive editing. If you cannot teach or tell people how to edit appropriately, I will start blocking them. This is not the first time Nigeria-related meetups/editathons/contests have had a major disruption on Wikipedia, but I do hope this is the last. Primefac (talk) 14:17, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed. Improve, or disrupt? --Deepfriedokra (talk) 17:27, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Following a conversation with one of your participants, I realised that it is because your instructions simply say "add Wikilinks!" with no further explanation or instruction. WP:OVERLINK is pretty darn specific, so maybe either link to that or include a summary of the important points. Primefac (talk) 17:37, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Editors are also adding external links in body text, in places where we would normally only use a wikilink. (Even a wikilink wouldn't be appropriate in many cases, as the linked organisation has no article and is not notable.) I appreciate the sentiment behind these campaigns, and they may be successful in advancing the cause being promoted, but it does seem to be at the expense of doing the encyclopedia more harm than good. We must put our readers before outside interests. Certes (talk) 12:36, 28 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
