Query[edit]

Hi Beeblebrox. Saw your post at the HD about this essay. It seems quite good. Just one question though. Why single out one person like you did in the Wikipedia:Public relations and marketing#I'd rather the article wasn't even here if I can't control it.? I know nothing about that person other than what's written on Wikipedia, but maybe it would be better to use someone who actually tried to get their Wikipedia article deleted or use their PR people (if such a person exists) as example if a specifc person example is needed. Maybe even this might work better even if it's not technically a PR rep making the edits. Anyway, FWIW, I don't think what you wrote loses its impact by not mentioning any specific individual. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:46, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

That's a fair point. At first I was going to make a short list of people known for crummy things they did, and then I got annoyed trying to think of three names and just sort of bunted. Beeblebrox (talk) 23:13, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Streisand effect + spam backfires[edit]

Good essay! I suggest you add our Streisand effect article to the reading list. Some misguided PR efforts have gotten their sponsors really ugly press.

There’s also our spam blacklist. That blocks adding any blacklisted domain’s links here. There are the local English-only blacklist (for en.wikipedia only spam) and the global blacklist on Meta for x-wiki spam. The meta blacklist covers all 700+ Wikimedia projects and is the default blacklist for all other MediaWiki users.

10 years ago, search engines allegedly consulted our lists when preparing their own lists of search engine spammers. If that was true, it caused lowered search engine placement for Wikipedia spammers. —A. B. ^{(talk • contribs • global count)}
