New articles[edit]

@Encyclopædius: can new articles be counted in the count or only articles expanded from existing? SEe --SuperJew (talk) 16:31, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Existing I think, given that we have 3.3 million stubs, but if anybody wants to create a stub and later expand it within the week I'll accept that. I'll start it that way, but if I find people are creating more articles to Destub rather than destubbing long standing ones I'll abolish it. † Encyclopædius 16:44, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Who is funding/organizing this?[edit]

Sorry if I'm missing something obvious, but I'm having trouble finding information about where the prizes come from (and/or whether there is any organizational coordination of the campaign?) Looks like a great effort, I'm just looking for context. May fit in nicely with a campaign I'm working on too. -Pete Forsyth (talk) 17:10, 28 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

According to Encyclopaedius, Wikimedia UK is funding this effort, hence the focuses on the United Kingdom. –♠Vami_IV†♠ 18:58, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Peteforsyth and Vami IV: I'm a bit late with the answer, but that's absolutely right, Wikimedia UK are providing the prize money while Encyclopædius is organising it. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 14:10, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Users destubbing together?[edit]

I noticed that there is a heading of Worm That Turned and Staceydolxx. From the pages linked it seems both worked on destubbing the pages. How does this work for the competition? (pinging @Encyclopædius: as the organiser) --SuperJew (talk) 18:11, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

SuperJew, We turn down any prizes :) Just in it for the prestige WormTT(talk) 18:53, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Worm That Turned: Well done to you guys! :) I think it's worth having the answer on the books anyways for the comp ;) --SuperJew (talk) 20:48, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Scopes[edit]

@Encyclopædius: We should probably have defined problematic scopes in advance. For example: countries which are on 2 continents, such as Russia or Turkey, under which region do they fall for this challenge? Also what about articles which cover several regions, such as 1999–2000 World Sevens Series which "was consisited of ten tournaments spread over five continents" ? --SuperJew (talk) 20:33, 3 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Russia is largely Asia so Asia. Turkey is Europe. NZ champions, classify under NZ.† Encyclopædius 20:48, 3 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
As Russia and Turkey are part of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge, and not the Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge, shouldn't they both be considered Europe? Nehme1499 (talk) 20:51, 3 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Encyclopædius and SuperJew: thoughts? Nehme1499 (talk) 00:27, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Russia should be under Asian challenge, I know I've done entries for it. If there's Russian entries in the European one they should be moved over. Turkey is Europe IMO.† Encyclopædius 06:19, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose anything west of Nizhny Novgorod could be called Europe. Moscow is really Europe. We could split it but I think it's easier just to have under one.† Encyclopædius 11:08, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
What about articles related to Football in Russia, which is under the jurisdiction of the UEFA? Shouldn't those go under Europe? Also, I don't really see how Turkey should be considered part of Europe and Russia part of Asia; in my opinion they should either both be Europe, or both Asia. Nehme1499 (talk) 15:32, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Do whatever you're happy with. All country and continent territory is a man-made creation anyway!† Encyclopædius 16:06, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ahahaha you're right. Nehme1499 (talk) 16:21, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Encyclopædius and Nehme1499: Where would you place Israel? --SuperJew (talk) 19:27, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@SuperJew: I would have to say Asia, unless we are dealing with anything (association) football-related, then Europe. Same logic for Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia. Also, same thing for Australia (Oceania), unless it's football-related, then Asia. I'm sure there are other similar situations around the world (football and non football related). Nehme1499 (talk) 19:49, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Returning back to the Russia situation, I think the logic should not be: "This subject is from Russia, which we decided is part of Asia, therefore this subject should go under Asia". The reasoning should be "Where is this subject from? Is he from St. Petersburg? We put him under Europe. Is he from Tomsk? He should go under Asia". Same for other cross-continental countries. Nehme1499 (talk) 19:49, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Higher assessments[edit]

@Encyclopædius: If an article reaches GA or higher during the contest period because of the improvements made by the claiming user, can additional points be awarded? Kges1901 (talk) 18:18, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Somebody could put up a prize for most GAs if they wanted to!† Encyclopædius 18:27, 4 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Checking articles[edit]

@Encyclopædius: Are people checking that articles submitted are up to the standard requested? I noticed that was the way it was done on Wikipedia:The Great Britain and Ireland Destubathon and also the Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/The World Contest. --SuperJew (talk) 09:12, 8 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

No, as it's not a full on contest. But if I spot some serious issues I will say something.† Encyclopædius 09:25, 8 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

One month status[edit]

As this challenge has been running for a month, I thought it'd be fun to have a bit of a round-up how things are doing. We'll take it by regions :)

(this is all in some tongue-in-cheek humour and zest, and is not meant to be taken too seriously)

England: So in England we have a tight contest between Kges1901 and MauraWen with 6 articles each, while Worm That Turned and Staceydolxx destubbed another 23 articles together (but are not eligible for the prize). Running close behind our leaders with 4 is Penny Richards and with 3 is the The C of E. England is still a wide open region folks :)
Scotland: An easy outright lead by Penny Richards with 12 articles, while only Kges1901 and the team of Worm That Turned and Staceydolxx contributing another article each. Seems Scotland is in the lowlands right now ;)
Wales: Another outright lead by Penny Richards who destubbed 6 articles, with no competition at all as the only other contributors are the ineligible team of Worm That Turned and Staceydolxx who destubbed 4 articles.
Ireland/N. Ireland: Here we have a close contest between The C of E with 6 articles and MauraWen with 4 articles. Trailing behind are Penny Richards and myself (SuperJew), destubbing an article each.
Europe: Europe seems quite poorly populated based on these contributions, with only three current countries being represented. Vami_IV is in the lead after destubbing 5 articles, while behind him are Kges1901 and Sturmvogel_66 with 2 articles each and Penny Richards and The C of E with an article each. Don't stay away from Europe due to COVID-19 - it doesn't infect through the keyboard!
Asia: Our largest continent has some heavy hitters, with Nehme1499 leading after destubbing 26 Lebanese articles and Kges1901 not far behind with 22 Russian articles. Quite a way back we have Abishe with 5 articles. Helping round out Asia are CAPTAIN MEDUSA, Skr15081997, Worm That Turned and Staceydolxx, Ganbaruby, Penny Richards, and Vami_IV with one article destubbed each.
Africa: Out of Africa we have a clear lead with Kingoflettuce destubbing 23 articles over a range of 20 countries (I'm personally cheering/challenging for them to get all 54 ;) ). Behind them are Abishe with 3 and Penny Richards with 1, while Worm That Turned and Staceydolxx destubbed another 2.
Latin America and the Caribbean: Hola, once more we have a clear lead to Kingoflettuce who destubbed 12 Jamaican articles. Also contributing to the region are HawkAussie and Worm That Turned and Staceydolxx with 2 articles each, as well as Koridas and Penny Richards contributing one each.
North America: In this region, which seems to encompass only the United States based on the contributions (but that's okay - Canadians will just apologise about it ;) ), we have another tight contest: Kges1901 with 6 articles is just leading over Penny Richards who contributed 5. Also Kingoflettuce gave a little with one article, but seeing them in other regions, I'm sure they can make up the ground.
Oceania: Unsurprisingly perhaps, the focus on Oceania is on Australia, with New Zealand getting a little shout-in too with HawkAussie destubbing 2 (I would even count it as 3) about them, totalling 4 all together. The outright lead here is for the 3rd time with Kingoflettuce who destubbed 25 articles, while I (SuperJew) an failing to keep up, standing at 16. Other contributors are Quetzal1964, Worm That Turned and Staceydolxx, and Penny Richards with 1 article each.
Total: Our leader on total articles destubbed is Kingoflettuce with 61 articles. Following him are the trio of Kges1901 with 37, the Worm That Turned and Staceydolxx team with 34, and Penny Richards with 32. I also think it's worth giving a big shout-out to Penny Richards who destubbed articles in the most regions (9).

Well folks, that's all for this wrap-up. Let me know if you would like another one next month or if this was tiresome and you'd rather I quit and use my time for better things ;) Cheers, --SuperJew (talk) 08:36, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I enjoy this. –♠Vami_IV†♠ 09:18, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Also a big shout-out to our organizer and boss dude, Encyclopædius, who runs the whole show and without them we'd have much less fun and a lot more stubs and redlinks --SuperJew (talk) 08:37, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Exceptionally fine work SuperJew thanks so much for this. Considering the circumstances nearly 1600 destubs in a few months is remarkable. I hope though we can get more people involved long term.† Encyclopædius 11:11, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

So fun, and thanks for the shout out! Penny Richards (talk) 13:36, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Very nice--thanks SuperJew! Kingoflettuce (talk) 03:49, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Two month status[edit]

Since the one month status seems to be liked, we're back for the two month status (sorry it's a day late - I'm a bit busy at the moment studying for my anatomy exam). Once again, we'll take it by regions (totals are over the two months) :)

(this is all in some tongue-in-cheek humour and zest, and is not meant to be taken too seriously)

England: Well, in this month in England, MauraWen has taken the lead, destubbing 13 articles all together, while Kges1901 stayed on 6 articles. Penny Richards and The C of E have also stayed on their previous totals of 4 and 3 respectively, while Worm That Turned and Staceydolxx rose to 25 articles (but are a team and not eligible for the prize).
Scotland: Seems a bad month for Scotland, with only one new article destubbed (by The C of E), meaning Penny Richards keeps her super lead of 12 articles.
Wales: Also here not much movement, seeing only Penny Richards adding 2 articles, taking her lead to 8 articles and staying the only eligible team for the prize (Worm That Turned and Staceydolxx have their 4 articles from the previous month).
Ireland/N. Ireland: On the island there has been more additions, with both leaders doubling their article count, meaning The C of E leads with 12 articles, while MauraWen is not so far behind with 8 articles. Trailing behind with no change are Penny Richards and myself (SuperJew), destubbing an article each, while Worm That Turned and Staceydolxx added an article too.
Europe: So seems Europe received a heap of attention this month. Currently Vami_IV is in the lead with 30 articles destubbed, and very close behind them is Sturmvogel_66 with 29 articles. Far behind them are Penny Richards with 3 articles, Kges1901 still with 2, while The C of E and Abishe destubbed one article each. I'm intrigued who will win Europe :)
Asia: In an opposite trend to Europe, Asia started well in the first month, but hardly had destubbings in month number 2. Nehme1499 extended his lead by 2, reaching 28 Lebanese articles destubbed, while behind him Kges1901 is still on 22 articles. Abishe added the most this month, reaching 12 articles. And rounding out the large continent, CAPTAIN MEDUSA, Skr15081997, Worm That Turned and Staceydolxx, Ganbaruby, Penny Richards, and Vami_IV all still have one article each.
Africa: Seems the COVID-19 situation in Africa is so bad, that no one destubbed even a single article. The tallies stayed the same with Kingoflettuce leading easily with 23 articles (still waiting for all 54 countries mate ;) ). Behind them are Abishe with 3 and Penny Richards with 1, while Worm That Turned and Staceydolxx destubbed another 2.
Latin America and the Caribbean: Another continent with barley any movement, with only Koridas adding 2 articles to take their tally to 3. Kingoflettuce is still leading here with 12 articles, while behind him are HawkAussie and Worm That Turned and Staceydolxx with 2 articles each, as well as Penny Richards with one.
North America: In a massive second half comeback, Penny Richards took the outright lead with 23 articles, including the only Canadian article destubbed! Kges1901 is behind her with 7 articles after a quieter month, and Kingoflettuce with 1 article.
Oceania: Here we have a nice amount of contribution, with Kingoflettuce reaching a tally of 30 articles to keep myself SuperJew at bay. I also had a quieter month (due to trying to study for my afore mentioned exam haha), and have reached 21 articles. In the third place is HawkAussie who has continued destubbing and reached 10 articles. Rounding out the region are Penny Richards with 2 articles, and Quetzal1964 and Worm That Turned and Staceydolxx with 1 article each.
Total: Our leader on total articles destubbed is still Kingoflettuce with 66 articles. Following him closely is Penny Richards with 56 articles, while the trio of Kges1901 with 38, the Worm That Turned and Staceydolxx with 37, and Vami_IV with 31 round out the top five. Also Penny Richards added another region and still has destubbed articles in the most regions (10) (second shout-out!) (after ce: and apparently that's all of the regions. Well done!).

Well folks, that's all for this second wrap-up. We're in the final month, so let's give it a push, find out who wins Europe, can Kingoflettuce destub an article for every African country, and can Penny Richards destub an article in every one of the 10 regions? never mind she's done that already, so can she destub an article from a region not mentioned? (um Antarctica? Space?) I jest of course, Penny Richards is awesome!

Cheers, --SuperJew (talk) 12:20, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

As grand as the one-month roundup, SuperJew. Without fresh sports to watch, this is the most exciting competition coverage around. Thanks for the shoutouts! Onward to Month Three. Penny Richards (talk) 14:18, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This is a great way to keep busy while being stuck at home this summer. Thanks for the fun round-up SuperJew! MauraWen (talk) 16:27, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Honestly, even when I was stuck at home, there wasn't so much extra free time ;) (was busy studying/looking for a job/taking care of the house and pets while my wife worked extra at her essential job). Glad you're enjoying it :D --SuperJew (talk)
Good stuff. –♠Vami_IV†♠ 15:28, 4 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Oh my....[edit]

Just a quick line.... (sorry I've been super busy with work this past month... originally was thinking of doing a half month) Seems we have some warming up on this Challenge the past month:

Just a few more days. Who will win? Who will lose? Who will tell your story? (seriously though boss Encyclopædius, do you want a serious count by yourself for end of comp, or another fluff piece by crappy writers such as myself?) --SuperJew (talk) 19:34, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the round-up, SuperJew! I've just met my personal goal for the challenge, (30 England articles). Heading home to North America for the final stretch, I am looking forward to destubbing a new subject: the snakes of the southeastern USA. MauraWen (talk) 23:40, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
100 destubs or bust! –♠Vami_IV†♠ 23:44, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Done. –♠Vami_IV†♠ 21:59, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
