Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 20:27, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 22:35, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Graphics and Organization

It seems like a better icon graphic for the user and discussion templates are needed, since an American flag seems ambiguous. It'd also be nice to organize the project page with something like WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America's page. I'm willing to create a new icon graphic and do some page organization if there's no objections. falsedef 21:22, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

I don't like the idea of a person on the template. There are many different asians out there.--D-Boy 06:43, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
I don't think a person on the template would be a good idea, either, however an American flag isn't representative of Asian Americans. falsedef 07:25, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
What do you suggest as an alternative?--D-Boy 04:40, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

What if we put the Asia map on a US flag in place of the blue field of stars? Then we'd have a single image that combines the two. The only problem is "which Asia map," given the dogmatic view of some. Also, it probably wouldn't work for the userbox template, since it would be too small. --Ishu 08:37, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

I uploaded a hack draft version. I'm not happy with how it looks at 150px on the template. Maybe someone else can do a better job, but this is what I have in mind.
--Ishu 06:56, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
I don't think the map in the corner will really show up as anything when it's reduced on a user template. Do we know of any existing symbolism for Asian America? Hong Qi Gong (Talk - Contribs) 16:39, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
similar to WP African Diaspora's logo falsedef 04:28, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
I'm fine with either of those.--D-Boy 12:55, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Can someone please add importance class text to the template for WPAA? falsedef 22:16, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

Pacific Islander

Although a name change isn't necessary, I believe that Pacific Islanders deserve (temporarily at least) classification within the project. falsedef 07:34, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

Style guide

Greetings--Over at Talk:Asian American I suggested framing some style guidelines for that page, since it is getting a bit unwieldy. It was suggested that that development occur at this project. If you have one already, we'd be happy to use and/or develop that guide. Some guidelines that have come up include:

  • When to refer to an individual's ethnicity? Especially if the person is wikilinked, avoid mentioning the ethnic group. If there is a theme of progression from one ethnic group to another, it's probably appropriate to mention the ethnic groups.
  • When to use American in reference to groups: I don't know where to go with this issue, but I know there's not a lot of consistency, and there are trade-offs for using it (e.g., clutter) vs. not using it (too general). However, I do think that when referring to official designations, such as census groupings, American should not be used, since the Census Bureau does not refer to groups using the American modifier.
  • Guidelines about discussing "Asian Americans" vs. individual ethnic sub-groups: When to use one vs. the other.
  • The use of hyphens: The usual debate, but would be helpful to be stated in a guideline.
  • Which groups are included? (and whether to include Pacific Islander) Some editors remove references to groups that fall outside of the Census definition (e.g., Afghanistan, Siberia). Should articles use more or less inclusive definitions, and what acknowledgement should be made for other definitions?

Plus it might be helpful to discuss topics and themes that can be threaded through sets of articles. Additional suggestions would be welcome. --Ishu 04:29, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

When discussing Asian Americans and demographics (e.g., income, education), one should be very careful when drawing conclusions. For example, there are large differences in education and income when comparing different Asian American ethnic groups, and these differences might be ignored if the discussion focuses on Asian Americans in aggregate. --Ishu 22:06, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

A lot of the names for immigrant groups on this template seem very neologistic and problematic. I have nominated the following for deletion or moves to more encyclopedic names:

Category:American Japanese people

Articles in Category:American Japanese people (not to be confused with Category:Japanese Americans) seems to be mixed or non-ethnic Japanese people who are living in Japan, some or maybe all of them seem to have Japanese citizenship. What I'm wondering is, should we change the name of this category so that it is not confused with Category:Japanese Americans? Hong Qi Gong (Talk - Contribs) 22:09, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

I'd put the entire Category:Japanese people by ethnic or national origin; for CfD, personally ... virtually every name in there is a violation of WP:NEO. Not to mention, many of the people thus categorised aren't even Japanese citizens; the non-citizens should be put into e.g. Category:American expatriates in Japan. cab 02:08, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
It doesn't look like most articles for the people categorised in that umbrella category bother to mention citizenship matters, which I think would be a notable fact, given the difficulty and relative rarity that one naturalises to gain Japanese citizenship (at least according to Debito Arudou). Oh well. I'm guessing we can thank our nihongophile friends for the naming of those categories, especially since it seems to follow the American convention of "Ethnicity-Citizenship". Proposal to create demographics article

At Talk:Asian Americans I am proposing creation of a new article for detailed discussion of demographics of Asian Americans. The new article would expand the demographic discussion in the main article, which has become cumbersome and overly detailed. I would appreciate input on this proposal, as well as whether to title the article Demographics of Asian Americans, Asian American demographics or something else. I think it would be best if comments were placed at Talk:Asian American#New article for Demographics of Asian Americans?. --Ishu 04:56, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

Cable Act of 1922

I wish to direct your attention to this article on The Cable Act of 1922. As you can probably see, this subject isn't exactly about an Asian American, but it is a piece of legislation that dealt directly with earlier Asian immigrants. I feel that The Cable Act is not as well-known as other pieces of legislation, such as the Chinese Exclusion Act or the Gentlemen's Agreement, but is just as worthy of that kind of attention.

Although I have been a long-time observer, I am a relative novice when it comes to contributing articles. Looking back on the history page, it seems that the article has suffered from some misunderstandings and a lack of substantial citations. I've take a couple of steps to correct that, but I believe that the article could greatly benefit from the sober wisdom of the contributing members of this project. Thanks. I've saved the list in a subpage in my userspace - User:HongQiGong/List of Chinese Americans. In case the article does get deleted, we can recreate different versions of the list based on occupation. 野雞車/wild chicken trucks/chinatown buses

It seems we still haven't been able to definitively resolve the question of whether 野雞車 (wild chicken trucks) is an appropriate Chinese term for Chinatown bus lines. I've added tags on the article soliciting an expert to weigh in. Specifically, we need to resolve once and for all whether: (1) the term has ever been used to describe Chinatown buses in the US (as opposed to transportation in Asia), (2) if the term has been used, whether it is pejorative, and (3) if it is pejorative, whether it should be kept (and noted as such) or deleted. Please discuss at Talk:Chinatown bus lines#Chicken trucks? (野雞車), thanks. Wl219 02:08, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Whether or not to include the "Korean American" category on a page: RfC

I recognize this is a double whammy of emotional content (both the definition of "Who is American?" and the recent events), but I wanted to point out Talk:Cho_Seung-hui#Request_for_Comment:_Inclusion_of_Category:Korean_Americans in case anyone is interested in commenting on this Request for Comment. I am not Asian American or Asian so I have probably argued the point as far as I can, but some of those who read this board may want to weigh in (or not). I just feel strongly, and have evidence for my feelings, that someone raised in the U.S. can be an American (hyphenated or otherwise) even if not a U.S. citizen, and so I was annoyed by the continued (and current) removal of this category from that page. For that reason, I started a Request for Comment. Anyway, thanks. Moncrief 21:59, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

I thought it was relevant as interracial relationships is a hot button issue in Asian American community so I marked the talk page with WP Asian Americans. But since miscegenation is such a big and broad topic, Im not completely sure. Any thoughts? mirageinred 16:31, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

This is a little researched topic in the context of Asian American history, but before the Chinese Exclusion Acts were repealed, an overwhelming majority of Chinese Americans were men, so personally I think the topic of miscegenation is relevant in that sense. These men were not legally allowed to marry white women, but many unofficially did, and they often went to Mexico to actually have a marriage ceremony performed. Some of these men also married non-white women, like Native American women or African American women. Hong Qi Gong (Talk - Contribs) 16:56, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

Which articles should be top importance?

So far I rated Asian American as top importance (of course) but what about different ethnic groups that make up Asian American as a whole? (Korean Americans, Chinese Americans) And what about some of the smaller ethnic groups like Tibetan Americans? So far I rated all ethnic groups as top importance but I'm beginning to think only Asian American should be top importance. mirageinred 22:14, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Manzanar Article Needs Your Help!!

There quite the dispute going on (it's still rather civil) on Talk:Manzanar about the termnology used (concentration camp, internment camp, relocation center). Apparently, some people who are likely relatives of Holocaust victims/survivors are insisting that no camp other than a Nazi camp can be called a concentration camp, even though the other two choices are obviously wrong or euphemistic.

Please add your two cents to the discussion. Thanks. Gmatsuda 04:27, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

Population Figures

I think the population numbers on each Asian American ethnicity should come from the same source. The Filipino American page has the U.S. State Department as its source for a population count of 4 million, yet the 2006 American Community Survey from the U.S. Census has an estimation of about 2.9 million. All the other pages use the American Community Survey's estimates. We should use the American Community Survey's estimates for the Filipino American page as well.Mrsmith93309 00:51, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

and a Manzanar internee

The article on the photographer Tōyō Miyatake is a sad affair. It seems to have been created by the man's grandson, and then augmented a lot, but not by anyone showing any regard for citing sources. I splattered it with {{fact}} and similar flags, which haven't succeeded in encouraging anyone to give evidence for anything. I'd guess that most of what it says is true, but I don't know where to look it up. And material that I don't believe is true has recently been added (see its talk page).

Can somebody who's well informed about Japanese internment in Manzanar (or photography in California, etc.) please give it a look? Thanks. -- Hoary (talk) 07:34, 8 April 2008 (UTC) ..... Edited 10:48, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

I doubt very highly that anyone in the Miyatake family had anything to do with this article. Someday, when I get more time (I have other articles I intend to work on first), maybe I'll polish this one up. But someone else with the proper background and knowledge really should take the bull by the horns, so to speak. -- Gmatsuda (talk) 09:27, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
I'm not crying "COI", but really, look at the name at the start of the edit history and then look within the article. But this is a small point: Miyatake is a noteworthy photographer and I have not enjoyed repeatedly cutting him down to size as it were: what little I know of his genuine accomplishments is more than enough to merit an article, and the occasional exaggerations in the article do him no service.
My problem is that I now have no book about this sad episode in US history. I understand that others too are busy, and I don't want to push. No, no, that's untrue: I want to push, ho ho. -- Hoary (talk) 09:40, 8 April 2008 (UTC) ..... Edited 10:48, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
How do you know that Marktakahashi is Miyatake's grandson? -- Gmatsuda (talk) 09:54, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
[Thinks: "Jeez, why is Gmatsuda so insistent on this little point. Oh well, let's give him chapter and verse." Looks. Doesn't find. Duh!]
'Cause my brain has been numbed by staring at this computer too long, that's why. Er, sorry about all that.
But look, what we have is something that unfortunately seems to have stabilized into a so-so and poorly sourced article bristling with citation neededs (which cumulatively seem to say Don't believe a word of this!), an article about somebody who deserves much better. I can't do the job; perhaps somebody here can.
Apologies to Marktakahashi, whom I'd like to thank for at least kicking this off. -- Hoary (talk) 10:48, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Asian Americans

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! Please consider for inclusion into the project. One editor has already been topic banned for trying to oppose removing relevant information or deletion of the entire article, and that the article must be deleted because the individual and his ethnicity are not notable. Wone's murder was deleted (but restored) from deaths in Aug 2006. So far it as has survived nominations for speedy delete and nomination for deletion based on Biography of Living Persons concerns. There have been efforts to protect the names of those charged with obstruction of justice on the basis that RS articles make it appear they might be suspects though they have not been charged or convicted of murder. There has been speculation on many boards, though perhaps not well enough documented in RS, that the crime might have been set up or partly motivated by Wone's ethnicity. There is still a considerable amount of information to be added from articles and released affadavits that has not appeared in this article that would likely be contested if added. This is a topic which has barely been covered outside LGBT, Asian and DC press as a "mysterious" murder, with aspects of Vincent Chin, OJ Simpson, and Jesse Dirkhising but few people are willing to name anyone as likely killers. Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 04:48, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Asians not allowed in Binghamton shootings

In case people have noticed, the perpetrator and evidently most of the victims in the shootings are Vietnamese or Asian Americans. However editors over there have removed categories for Asian American history, and the inclusion of the article in this project. This is part of a larger wiki-pattern to generally quash any assertion of notability of any Asian American angle to any article, in constrast to some other ethnic / reliious / gender identity groups that tag and categorize everything in sight. Please help edit this article and establish proper Asian American projects and categories. The press is largely missing or burying the Asian American aspects to this, perhaps out of politcal correctness. Bachcell (talk)

Relax. The event is notable and it'll become a permanent part of WP. The impact it has on the Asian American community will become apparent soon enough. Hong Qi Gong (Talk - Contribs) 14:09, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

Taiwanese American or Chinese American?

A new anonymous editor (99.166.32.226 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) started today changing the term "Chinese American" to "Taiwanese American" in biographical articles. Some of their edits have been reverted, others are in a gray area, pending the answer to the question: What is the correct denomination for someone born in Mainland China, who studied in Taipei?

I looked at all changes so far, and at least the following seem dubious to me. (Most items are dubious to me because I didn't see a direct reference, but I didn't do a thorough investigation.)

There's a similar change by another editor, which was followed by the anon:

I don't have the time to delve into this more deeply, but I thought I'd report it here, since this seems to be the pertinent WikiProject to me. — Sebastian 23:59, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

This is going to open an endless debate on whether Taiwanese Americans consider themselves as Chinese Americans too. The term "Taiwanese" and "Chinese" are very polarising. The alliance (talk) 00:12, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

What the heck? Didn't the article just get featured on the main page? Hong Qi Gong (Talk - Contribs) 03:24, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

Invitation to discussion

Active editors of this article are invited to join the discussion regarding the change in Asian American article's infobox. Specifically we are looking to get nominations for individuals who would fall under this wikiproject, nominations shall remain open until 9 November 2009. Comments are also welcomed. Thank you in advance --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 13:19, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

FYI, the nomination process is now over, and the voting period has began. Due to lack of nominations the slot for Laotian female representative is vacant, and will need further discussion sometime after voting has been concluded. The voting period will last until 4 December 2009. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 20:04, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

Article proposal

Should there be an article regarding the case of Christopher Savoie? It has already been covered on CNN, CBS and NY Daily News. Thus meeting WP:NN--RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 13:53, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Disregard, there is already an article on the subject. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 20:06, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

Active Members?

How many active members are there of this wikiproject? --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 20:32, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

Hey there. I am not very involved in this WP, but I do have this talk page on my watchlist and I do edit some Asian American-related articles. Hong Qi Gong (Talk - Contribs) 18:47, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

Asian Indian American service during World War II

I am looking for assistance in finding references regarding Asian Indian Americans during World War II. During the 1940 US Census "Hindu Americans" were the fourth largest group of Asian Americans after the Japanese, Chinese, and Filipinos. So far I have not found significant sources which to create a paragraph for Indian Americans in the article Military History of Asian Americans. If anyone would like to assist, they can place references they find on the article's talk page. Thank you in advance. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 22:37, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

Delete sorting

Why is it that our project doesn't have a delete sorting page? And how do we create one? --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 18:08, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

Scope

Perhaps work needs to be done to build a consensus as to what the scope of our project is. There is no statement on our project page, that often is seen on other project pages, and can be useful to focus our efforts.

Presently, it appears to be very broad, covering all subjects and individuals relating to Asian Americans. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 06:00, 7 December 2009 (UTC)

  • I added several Asian American neighborhoods to the project list so that new users would be attracted to the project. WhisperToMe (talk) 07:02, 7 December 2009 (UTC)

This article could use some new eyes with expert knowledge/mediation/constructive input; I'm posting to several WikiProjects that seem relevant and to RfC. I have already done so on WP:Cleanup (other ideas just about where to seek help are also welcome). Article was created 06:51, 20 April 2004 by an IP. There's thirteen talk page archives and five Articles for Deletion discussions; there are 122 watchers and about 400 daily page views on average. Has never reached much of a consensus regarding the subject, content or sources AFAIK. Thanks! Шизомби (talk) 03:47, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

First Asian-American woman in college women's basketball

The page Teiko Nishi claims that Nishi was the first Asian-American woman to start on an NCAA Division I basketball team, the UCLA Bruins in 1985. I have read all the newspaper articles mentioning Nishi I can find via ProQuest, Factiva, Lexis-Nexis, and Newspaper Source. None of them suggest that Nishi was the first Asian-American women's basketball starter. She was the only Asian-American woman playing NCAA ball in California 1987, but that's as close as I can come. I've also searched the NCAA archives, but can find no mention of the first Asian-American starter in women's basketball. If anyone has ideas about who was the first, or how we could find out, could you please comment at Talk:Teiko Nishi? Thanks, Cnilep (talk) 15:41, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
