Version 1 of table[edit]

This is a trial balloon for development & refinement.

  • No./Name field links to Wiki article if one exists.
  • Year is year of discovery, and gives a rough indication of how long the observational baseline is, and thus the orbital accuracy. Note that "Alt name" and year of discovery are redundant if an alternate designation exists, which it does after the first few hundred. This wastes 6 columns for the whole table due to the first 0.2% of the data, so there might be a better way. Just moving the discovery year over to the alternate name field for the first ~330, and resolving multiplicities by lettering or numbering (eg, 1857A, 1857B, or 1857-1, 1857-2,... etc) would easily solve this problem, but I hesitate to invent new nomenclature unnecessarily; suggestions solicited.
  • These are "osculating elements", meaning correct for the moment of epoch time given. Converting them to other distant epoch times involves a complex multi-body computation, which can be done by eg the JPL HORIZONS code, through the web. Too difficult for most us to consider doing I think, especially en masse.
  • Trial precision at the moment is based on the number of significant figures in the JPL SBD listing for Pallas, presumably one of the most precisely known. I expect this will be untenable in the end, so we will likely lose a digit or maybe even more per orbital element when space crunches us, to get some of the interesting physical quantities (estimated size, period, spectral type,....) some digits are going to have to go from the orbital elements. The few I have shown (for 2 Pallas & 3 Juno) have the full precision indicated by their estimated uncertainties, which will give space positions << 1 arc min I think, for a considerable time around the epoch.
  • I am sorry to find that while some epochs are standardized to an even time (eg, JD 2455000.5), many are not. The Earth moves 30 km/s, so 3 digits after the decimal point (~90 sec of time) ~3000 km of motion during 0.001 day, which would be <1 arc min in its position even as observed from the nearest distance of Venus, but there may be better compromises here. This turned out to be a "false fact". I just misinterpreted the perihelion passage times tp as the epoch times; in fact, all the JPL object pages seem to have the same epoch time, of JD 2455000.5. This is in June 18, 2009, meaning that they must recompute the osculating elements pretty often (? like every year?) so one can easily compute a fairly accurate position at any time for a few years around the epoch time given, without having to do a big n-body calculation (which calls for the JPL HORIZONS program, or something like it, with the most accurate available input data.) The program that generates tables of standardized elements also has a standard epoch, 200 days earlier. Because it seems so mcuh easier to generate the table en mass starting from the JPL ASCII table I've used for Version 2, below, that to go through all 207,000 of the JPL object pages and try to pick out the elements and numbers we need, I think that is probably the way to go.
  • Filling in the detailed orbit elements dummied in clearly has to be done by computer; even doing the 50 objects (10 objects per decade) is going to be laborious enough by hand that it will take some time to complete. The tables here are linked (correctly I hope) to the Wiki articles by CaptainPanda et al, and the JPL web pages for each object.

I got tired before finishing, with 100001-100010, as I had intended. Tomorrow, perhaps.

It is still not clear that this is going to be really useful to anyone. I want something that is easy to use, easily readable by computer so people can do studies of the whole group by machine, has the basic physical information in it, and is accurate enough to be meaningful for most purposes. I dunno if all these desires can be realized in this form, but this may help find a solution (or kill off the whole project).

Just discovered an error in Version 1: I had misinterpreted the perihelion passage time tp as the epoch time. This means all the epoch times can be reduced in column space. I will undertake this ASAP. This experience convinces me that doing this by hand is impractical. A bot or some kind of automation is clearly going to be necessary. Version 2 of table[edit]

Here is an alternate form, which is attractive in several ways:

  • 1 It is essentially just pasted in from the ASCII table form JPL generates so beautifully, with almost no effort on my/our part. (As a result I have included a bigger sample in the table below.)
  • 2 All the elements seem to be rendered at a common & recent epoch, JD 2454800. If they are indeed all identical (which I have not checked yet, but will shortly with a Unix sort on the table), we could even save ~seven more columns by simply reporting it in a footnote.
  • 3 It includes some more spectral information, "G", the meaning of which is a mystery to me at the moment, but which can no doubt be discovered and documented here if we want to keep it.
  • 4 The format of the table could be altered without too much trouble with a simple program, to eg, add additional columns from other sources, such as the Period (immediately deriveable from a), etc.


Problems with this alternate form are:

  • 1 No discovery date is given. This is again in the alternate names, which are supplied for some later objects.
  • 2 I do not know the exact meaning of the "ref" column, though this again can no doubt be discovered and provided. I hope there are no copyright problems, but MPC does reserve some rights sometimes, so this may be a problem for the MPC references.
  • 3 Links to our existing Wikipedia articles will need to be supplied, as well as to the JPL detailed information pages. But this seems no more difficult that for the previous version.
  • 4 I have just put in the ASCII JPL table using Wiki "blockquote", in a very clumsy way because I have not yet learned any better. This gets serious at #100000, when it suddenly stops preserving the ASCII columns. I presume some of our experts in Wikicode can fix this up easily, but at the moment I cannot.

I had looked at this table earlier, but forgot it was all at the common epoch. This seems to me to be a huge advantage, so at the moment I favor it, if the other issues above can be resolved. Again I have put in a fair sampling of the full range, so folks can see what we are up against here.
