Who’s currently active?

I’ve been adding the WikiProject Environment templates to articles this past month, and am currently the only active member of the Sustainability Task Force. Since the scope of this project is so vast, I’m wondering who is active in the overall WikiProject. I notice with some surprise that the To-Do section hasn’t been updated since 2016. Jusdafax (talk) 22:05, 1 May 2018 (UTC)

Hi Jusdafax! I am a new Wiki user, and am spending a semester on revising the "Environmental racism" Wiki page, which is under WikiProject Environment. Although this page has not been listed under the 'To do' list, I am hoping on improving its Neutrality. I also hope to help out with other articles within WikiProject Environment when I am done with the Environmental racism page. I just wanted to let you know that I am active in regards to improving articles in WikiProject Environment. Prisci8 (talk) 18:51, 25 September 2018 (UTC)

Missing articles of authors of the recent IPCC 1.5 degrees report

I could not find a page where the following list could be pasted. It is a list of those authors who do not yet have a Wikipedia article. I hoped that this list could help the project to identify missing articles. Maybe move it to a page where it is more beneficial than on this talk page: Ismail A. A new newsletter directory is out!

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Wyss Foundation Campaign for Nature

Hello! Back in late-April, the Wyss Foundation article's section on the Wyss Campaign for Nature was removed. I posted a comment at Talk:Wyss Foundation, seeking clarification and noting how the campaign is ongoing and has received significant coverage. I've "pinged" the editor who removed the content (User:Spintendo), as well as the editor who moved my draft (which I wrote and submitted for review on behalf of the organization) into the main space (User:Chetsford), but so far I've not received any replies. Might any WikiProject Environment members be willing to take a look and help determine how the Wyss Campaign for Nature might be mentioned in this article, if appropriate? Thanks in advance. New Wikipedia project proposal: "climate change"

For all editors who are interested, we're busy with putting together a proposal for creating a new Wikiproject called "Climate change" which will focus on managing, updating and improving all articles and other content related to the current climate crisis the world is facing. It will also count as an upgrade from the current climate change task force to a full project. Anyone who has any input or would like to put your name down in support of us, please make your way over to Wikipedia:WikiProject_Council/Proposals/Climate_Change and pitch in. You're very welcome! Thanks.

NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 21:53, 14 July 2019 (UTC)

Hi NewsAndEventsGuy, judging from the Climate Change Task Force talk page it seems this project is still active. its just that it seems as though the main WikiProject page is less active these days.--Discott (talk) 08:47, 26 July 2019 (UTC)
Heh... yes, well, since I'm one of the handful of eds generating activity at the CCTF I knew that, but thanks for noticing. By way of my clumsy question I hoped to learn if the rest of the project has a pulse? Nevermind, though, because the ship has sailed. • adding more information on how the topic effects different groups
  • Finding more references, especially from academic sources
  • I added some references to the end of the first line that I haven't read through yet to extract information

Thanks

Sandbox Organiser

A place to help you organise your work

Hi all

I've been working on a tool for the past few months that you may find useful, especially if you create new articles. Wikipedia:Sandbox organiser is a set of tools to help you better organise your draft articles and other pages in your userspace. It also includes areas to keep your to do lists, bookmarks, list of tools. You can customise your sandbox organiser to add new features and sections. Once created you can access it simply by clicking the sandbox link at the top of the page. You can create and then customise your own sandbox organiser just by clicking the button on the page. All ideas for improvements and other versions would be really appreciated.

Huge thanks to PrimeHunter and NavinoEvans for their work on the technical parts, without them it wouldn't have happened.

Hope its helpful

Biomass article

The environmental impact of Biomass is depicted extremely positively on the biomass article. Reading that page, readers will literally learn that biomass is "the most important source of renewable energy." I find the page's portrayal of biomass startling given that the limited knowledge I have indicates that scientists see biomass far more skeptically (see for example this lengthy Politico piece[1] and this shorter Guardian piece[2]). I do not have substantive knowledge on the topic or the related scientific literature to contribute much to the page, however. Looking at the history of the page, it looks like a lot of content has been scrubbed and added in the last two years, primarily by one editor whose first edits on Wikipedia were to Bioenergy Europe, a lobbying group for the biomass industry. Input from folks with substantive expertise would be welcome. Snooganssnoogans (talk) 02:41, 27 March 2021 (UTC)

Global spread of plastic-eating microorganisms

Some maps showing the spread of sea-based bacteria like Ideonella sakaiensis, Zalerium maritimum, ... (see plastisphere article) should be made available there (i.e. are they present in places where there is much plastic debris, like the garbage patches, or on beaches and certain rivers (i.e. Citarum, ...), known to carry much plastic waste ?

Also, are these bacteria commercially grown for allowing cleanup volunteers to spread them on beaches containing fine plastic particles, which are difficult to remove by hand? Add info on the mentioned page. --Genetics4good (talk) 11:28, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

Wyss Foundation: Request for review

Hello WikiProject members! I recently posted a request to the Wyss Foundation article talk page asking that editors review some proposed revisions that I shared there. The context is that an IP editor added some material to the Wyss Foundation article that is critical of the 30x30 conservation plan, which is okay, but I think the surrounding paragraph would benefit from some additional details. I'm refraining from making any edits myself because of my COI (I work for the Wyss Foundation). One of the three dimensions of sustainability is the environment. Please note that I have listed this article for reassessment of its WP:GA status (which it got 11 years ago). Lost Data on Page

Apologies, I'm new here and just trying to help.

On the following page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Environmental_impacts_of_lithium-ion_batteries) located at the bottom of the paragraph headed "Hydrometallurgical Metals Reclamation" the paragraph suddenly ends. The linked article refers to (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrometallurgy).

"The amount spent over" doesn't give a lot of context, but the author's intent appears to be something about the cost of using hydrometallurgical metal reclamation in a specific case study.

(https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acssuschemeng.8b03545) suggests that "The hydrometallurgical process is considered to be the most suitable method for the recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries."

(https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0956053X21001082) concludes "Under the tested conditions, lower incineration temperatures (400–500 °C) seem to favor the formation of CO and CO2, which reacts with the electrode material starting a carbothermic reduction and helps to improve the leaching efficiency of metals from LIBs without additional reducers that are usually needed."

(https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fchem.2020.578044/full) discusses the hydrometallurgical process for lithium in greater detail, and discusses some other leaching methods in detail.

I hope this helps. VoidMagi (talk) 09:04, 25 April 2022 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Notice

The article Alice Di Micele has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

While there is a tenuous claim of significance (and so fails speedy), there is no claim of notability.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. What climate/environment photos do you need? (Climate Visuals)

Hi everyone, Climate Visuals is working to increase the photographs available to Wikimedia Commons in their library and is seeking insights from the Wikipedia community about the climate change photos you need and would use.

(The Climate Visuals library is designed to increase the impact and engagement of climate change photography and information via their creative commons photo gallery and evidence base).

What are the specific climate- and environment-related topics that you need photos for? What articles or topic areas are you working on, or planning to work on, that could use more compelling photos?

Please do let me know below and I’ll pass the message on. Climate Visuals will use this info to collect and curate existing photos that would fill these gaps. Thanks! TatjanaBaleta (talk) 12:20, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Proposed merges

I propose a merge of Large marine ecosystem with Marine ecosystem. The former is not a large article, nor is it a particularly visible or high-quality one. Its greatest value is in describing NOAA's system which gives it its title - and that can be carried over without many issues. Its several paragraphs on ecosystem function would likely be a little more difficult to carry over, but they are also quite flawed (i.e. no external links in any references.)

The second merge I suggest is of ecological collapse with ecosystem collapse. Both are quite small and of limited quality. Can anyone suggest a difference between the two (preferably grounded in peer-reviewed science) which would make the former article worth keeping? InformationToKnowledge (talk) 18:07, 29 June 2023 (UTC)

I propose a third merger as well - that of space sunshade and space mirror (climate engineering). Discuss on the former's talk page. InformationToKnowledge (talk) 13:06, 16 July 2023 (UTC)

New Wikimedia project

Hello everyone,

I am posting my question here since I am not aware of a better place on Wikipedia to discuss similar things. I was thinking of proposing a new Wikimedia project (i.e. a sister project such as Wikibooks or Wikiversity) that would deal mostly with environmental issues. This idea is not new and on the project proposal page there has been several proposals in the past (mostly in 2006/7), none of which became an actual project - either the proposed functionality/info could be included in Wikipedia or the proposal was rejected due to inactivity (see e.g. Wikinvironment and WikiEnergy). Now, almost twenty years later, the environmental crisis is worse than ever and when looking around me I am rather disappointed to see how many people just don't care about their own unsustainable lifestyle/bad habits/over-consumption. But even if one tries, it is sometimes surprisingly difficult to find relevant information about e.g. what the waste sorting policy is in a particular country/city/company etc.

And so I think it's worth trying to propose a new Wikimedia project that would focus exactly on this kind of information - information about environmental protection that is too detailed (say on the level of cities/neighborhoods) to be put on Wikipedia, and/or information that is akin to how-to pages and as such should not be put on Wikipedia (see the "Wikipedia is not a manual" policy). The project is not meant to replace existing Wikipedia pages but rather to supplement them. Most importantly, this way there would be a single centralized site collecting targeted information about environmental protection that would be maintained by a large open community of contributors and that could enjoy good visibility under the Wiki-family umbrella. I have more specific ideas in mind, but this post is already long enough anyway.

In order to avoid the unhappy fate of previous proposals on similar topics, I would like to first collect some feedback from people who (hopefully) share the same concerns/attitude as I do. Any feedback, including the negative one, is appreciated. Thank you! JozumBjada (talk) 20:45, 5 September 2023 (UTC)
