Re: Women's Football / Soccer Update > October 2020

Not sure why 2020 Nigeria Women Premier League was included in the "list of current/upcoming season", as the league which usually start around March/April was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic (same thing happened to the men's league). The main article (NWFL Premiership) has been updated with that information. If that list was gotten from somewhere, the article should be removed. HandsomeBoy (talk) 18:58, 12 October 2020 (UTC)

Ahh, my mistake HandsomeBoy. Thanks for updating the main league article. Hmlarson (talk) 20:01, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
Fine, thank you for what you do. HandsomeBoy (talk) 01:50, 24 October 2020 (UTC)
Do you know if an announcement been made about a 2021 season HandsomeBoy? Hmlarson (talk) 15:34, 5 December 2020 (UTC)

@Hmlarson: It is starting on Wednesday, December 9th. There will be 14 teams, initially it was meant to be 16 but two teams were relegated to the lower division for failing to meet player clearance and medical deadlines. It will be a straight league system, and not the usual group A and B. The good news is that I have sources that cover everything, and will be documented in 2020-21 NWFL Premiership article. There was even a major preseason tournament with cash prizes for the participating teams 1 2. This is the second edition of the preseason, and it is easily the biggest women club football preseason in Nigeria.HandsomeBoy (talk) 14:49, 6 December 2020 (UTC)

Excellent HandsomeBoy. I started following NWFL Premiership on Twitter. Is the NWFL Premiership a pre-season tournament for the Nigeria Women Football League? Hmlarson (talk) 21:41, 8 December 2020 (UTC)
No...no...no, NWFL Premiership is the rebranded name for the top-tier women's league in Nigeria. It was formerly called "Nigeria Women Premier League". While Nigeria Women Football League is the body empowered by the NFF to organize women football leagues in Nigeria (just like what LMC does for men's league), Nigeria Women Football League currently run three tiers on the pyramid, of which the NWFL Premiership is on top. Nigeria Initiative

A new initiative has been started for articles related to women's football in Nigeria. See WP:WOSO-NG for more information or contribute to related articles. Hmlarson (talk) 19:43, 13 December 2020 (UTC)

Thank you so much, honored to volunteer in this regard. Top of my list is identification of good sources and articles that cover WoSo-NG. HandsomeBoy (talk) 09:11, 14 December 2020 (UTC)

Dang, missed this earlier in the year:

Spain's Primera División (women) added to WP:FPL for 2021

A heads-up that Spain's Primera División (women) has been added to Wikipedia:WikiProject_Football/Fully_professional_leagues#Women's_leagues.

There's also a discussion going on about a questionable reference being used on numerous European leagues (that aren't England) at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Football/Fully_professional_leagues#FAWSL_quotes

Hmlarson (talk) 01:30, 17 December 2020 (UTC)

Good news. HandsomeBoy (talk) 07:44, 17 December 2020 (UTC)

Hello everyone,

I was wondering, what are the implications of the proposed CAF Champion's League on WP:FOOTBALL considering that it will be an elite tournament contested by the biggest teams across Africa? HandsomeBoy (talk) 04:20, 12 December 2020 (UTC)

Not sure what you mean, it won't have any impact on the project, do you mean WP:NFOOTY? If so again it won't have any impact on notability. The competition will be notable as a top level continental competition organised by the continental federation and probably their seasons too. The clubs involved won't become notable by taking part but I think it is reasonable to say they are probably already notable by taking part in top level national competition in their respective countries. The competition won't make any players inherently notable due to any existing guideline, no player becomes notable by playing in a continental competition, it is the status of the domestic league of the participating club that determines notability per nfooty. That being said it is likely more players will simply pass GNG due to increased coverage as a result of playing in the competition but that will need to be decided on a player by player basis. It's fine that you have such trenchant views about this stuff, but it's completely inappropriate that you keep !supervoting in related deletion discussions. Bring back Daz Sampson (talk) 12:18, 12 December 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply, yes I meant NFOOTY. I also agree with you that it will bring more coverage. I just hope that Wikipedians reduce the GNG bar when it comes to outstanding players in the continental tournament. Even the men's footballers in the local league with Wikipedia articles do not pass GNG based on sources, but because the league is professional. I understand what Wikipedia is trying to protect, hence I am only advocating for equity. We should not be too strict in our analysis of GNG, that is all I am saying. HandsomeBoy (talk) 11:19, 12 December 2020 (UTC)
CAF Women's Champions League? If the same hand-full of editors we often see deleting articles when they do little to contribute to actual articles about women's footballers show up here providing their opinions (queue spiderone + number57 coming in to demonstrate how this can't be true), it's a really great thing! That's awesome (and perhaps scary to the same hand-full of editors).
WP:GNG for individual player articles is still your best option; however if editors would like to start a new consensus discussion to either create a new women's sports notability guideline or modify WP:FOOTY to include top-level tournaments in line with WP:NTRACK, WP:NBADMINTON, WP:NCRICKET and the like (see other sports guidelines here WP:NSPORT; WP:SPORTCRIT) , let's do it. Hmlarson (talk) 19:20, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
Forgot to include a link to Wikipedia:Consensus for more information. Hmlarson (talk) 19:22, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
What you keep on forgetting that 'top level' doesn't even apply to men's football. GiantSnowman 20:45, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
But most top level men's league have their players notable. As badly run as the NPFL is, it is regarded as "professional" league. HandsomeBoy (talk) 09:23, 14 December 2020 (UTC)
No, they don't. If the NPFL is fully-professional then please introduce sources at WT:FPL so we can reach consensus on including it. GiantSnowman 11:25, 14 December 2020 (UTC)
@GiantSnowman: Um Actually, the NPFL is listed in the "List of fully professional leagues" section of WP:FPL. --SuperJew (talk) 14:39, 14 December 2020 (UTC)
Grand - so what's the problem? GiantSnowman 14:57, 14 December 2020 (UTC)
Behavior like this and this (for context, I had just started editing in this space around then and that was the warm welcome you, an editor with admin privileges, provided as a preview of the repeated poor judgement you would continue to exhibit. Any other editors have additional examples they'd like to share? Hmlarson (talk) 19:23, 14 December 2020 (UTC)
Wholly irrelevant, kudos. GiantSnowman 19:42, 14 December 2020 (UTC)
See WP:ADMINACCT Any other editors have additional examples they'd like to share? Hmlarson (talk) 19:49, 14 December 2020 (UTC)
Please stay on-topic. There is no need to dredge this up from 7 1/2 years ago. Matilda Maniac (talk) 06:07, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
Actually, it's an ongoing issue. What's your opinion Matilda Maniac? Hmlarson (talk) 21:39, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
Hmlarson please explain what changes you would like to implement to NFOOTBALL to make it more like NTRACK. Please also explain what you mean by top-level tournament. Are you suggesting that a player that has played one game in the top tier of, say, Bhutanese football (male or female) would warrant an article? Spiderone 23:25, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
Scary, huh. Hmlarson (talk)
Whoops, forgot the link again: Wikipedia:Consensus Hmlarson (talk) 05:44, 14 December 2020 (UTC)

Instead of tagging the article where citations are needed, the Taiwan Mulan Football League (top league in Taiwan) was deleted and moved to Draft with "Undersourced, incubate in draftspace" edit summary. (cc Tomlui007, Changnick) Any contributions are appreciated to get this re-published. Shouldn't take much. Thank you. Hmlarson (talk) 14:10, 17 December 2020 (UTC)
