new article q.[edit]

Hey guys, I checked the to do list, and have been working on creating an article about the Dutch women's football club "Puck Deventer". You can find it on my sandbox. As you can see there, the background of the phrase "women's football" is light blue for a reason I can't figure out. Could somebody enlighten me? Thanks in advance! --Dutchy45 (talk) 16:30, 3 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Dutchy45: It is because it was a link to a disambiguation page. I went ahead and fixed it for you :) BTW a better place for questions like this would probably be the the task force talk page --SuperJew (talk) 17:03, 4 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@SuperJew: Thanks for fixing it and thanks (also) for the info. --Dutchy45 (talk) 17:31, 4 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Help! WUSA players up for deletion[edit]

Hello! I'm looking for help from people who know more about soccer in the United States. @Dwanyewest has been created articles for WUSA players, and I've been working to expand them. However, my familiarity with soccer/football is quite low, so I'm not always sure how to phrase things or what information is valuable (e.g., what does it mean to be All-American?). A number of articles are up for deletion (see Brooke O'Hanley, Megan Horvath, Carey Dorn, and Alexa Borisjuk), and we'd love your support keeping women on Wikipedia! Significa liberdade (talk) 16:35, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It's pointless, unfortunately. Wikipedia at large rather clearly doesn't want them here. The WUSA articles in particular are going straight to deletion nominations counter to the policy of WP:ATD-I, in which new page reviewers are told that they can and should unilaterally draftify new articles that are less than 90 days old without requiring consensus.
The best thing y'all can do is draft new articles in user or draftspace, draftify the ones you're working on yourselves before they get AfD'd, vote to draftify the ones being AfD'd, and restore the ones that've been deleted to draftspace. That at least allows you to duck the notability requirement for a few months while you do the work. It's why I created most of my articles in draftspace even when I could create new articles directly in mainspace — it's easier to get feedback in AfC than to survive AfD, and new page reviewers of women's footballers reach straight to AfD over any ATDs.
In the short term, the best thing you can do is look for print sources of their professional careers in contemporary newspaper archives. There's potential SIGCOV for many of these players that won't ever appear in a Google search, and AfD nominators won't do that work.
In the big picture, you'd be better off creating "List of TEAMNAME players" articles for those clubs if they don't already exist, or updating them if they do, instead of creating stubs for each player in mainspace. Same for the national-team players being mass-deleted because they don't have a corresponding national-team player list article.
On the terminology front, college accomplishments don't appear to establish notability for women's soccer players, so it might not be worth the effort if you don't already have notability established. Most of the terms have Wikipedia articles. For All-Americans, see All-America. -Socccc (talk) 17:56, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Socccc Thank you for this reply. I have noticed the same thing as @Significa liberdade following the football AfD and felt there was an active push against these early professionals in women's soccer. The one question I have is, what you use to find the contemporary newspaper archives. Any recommendation of helpful sites/tools? I would love to help expand some of these articles up for deletion. Demt1298 (talk) 18:18, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, @Socccc! I am/was in New Page Patrol (currently being judged for renewal of rights), which is where I've come across many of these players. I ended up looking specifically for women's soccer articles since I got a gist of common sites for information and common highlights. However, I still didn't/don't know a lot about soccer or university/professional sports more generally, so it's hard to make sure everything is accurate and what's notable is listed while non-notable achievements are pushed aside. I'll keep your comment in mind as I move forward. Significa liberdade (talk) 19:56, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Dwanyewest - This is good for you to know, too. Significa liberdade (talk) 19:56, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Newspapers.com is a good source for WP:SIGCOV on American athletes. You can access the site for free through the Wikipedia Library. Alvaldi (talk) 11:20, 26 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
