Mick Lanigan

I have just created a rather stubby article on former Senator Mick Lanigan from County Kilkenny. I think I spotted some brief mention somewhere to the effect that he had been a notable hurler in his day, but can't find the reference now.

Mick Lanigan was a trainer of the Kilkenny Hurling team from 1963 until 1977. He never played inter county hurling but did play rugby for kilkenny and also was a succesfull athlete Lannyman 2000 (talk) 05:06, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

Notability

I've noticed some GAA Championships appearing on Wiki , i think its time we defined WP:Notability for GAA club competitions before someone else does it for us

Kerry Novice Football Championship
Laois Junior "C" Hurling Championship being 2 examples . I think we need to limit these to Senior ,U-21,Minor and only the highest level of each of these competitions and merge the rest into a general article such as Kerry club football chamionships Gnevin (talk) 22:04, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

Yeah I'd agree mostly and as you say have a generic article for the rest. However I do think Intermediate and Junior Championships are also noteworthy enough to get their own separate articles. Opinions? Derry Boi (talk) 23:20, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

I'd disagree with that. They are as relevant as any other, with regard to the overall competition, i.e. its history, not the year-by-year pages which I have done a lot of. No one is saying these competitions are irrelevant its the WP:Notability which is questioned , epically for a non GAA person.

Just after looking at English_football_league_system#The_system which lead me to Bristol_Downs_Football_League. Would the Kerry novice championship be on par with the Bistrol league in terms of notability? I don't think so alot of the leagues in the list above are catch all for many divisions sort of like Kerry club football chamionships suggested above Gnevin (talk) 22:10, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

I suppose if they are put in their county's own section it's fair enough, was under the impression you meant for them to go, i.e. be deleted. I suppose as creator of the "guilty" pages I have to disagree !! As part of the overall structure in any county it deserves to be shown that all grades feed upwards into the top levels of competition. I suppose a patchy looking page with a lot of info missing about these lesser competions can look untidy and irrelevant but if the quality content is there, I can't see that "notabilty" is a problem. Plans for 2008

Gnevin, thanks for archiving the talk. So what's the plan for the year ahead? Now that Peter Canavan has been 'perfected,' I move that we try to get Gaelic_Athletic_Association up to Good Article status. It needs a fair bit of work, but it is a page that many people will come to from elsewhere so it's important that we get it up to standard. County Templates

After discussing with GNevin, small changes were made to the player templates in terms of presintation. I've now done the same on the County Templates. Basic changes are to remove the grey shading around the county crest and to bring the name of the county within the template boundary line. I've also done the same for Province templates and a few others listed on the main page here. Please tell me if you prefer to old version as I'll revert if so. GAA people

{{infobox GAA player}}{{infobox GAA dualplayer}}{{infobox GAA manager}}, i've just done a major coding update to these , thet will now accept as a minimum a year of birth or death and display some information it will also add that person to the relevant Category:year in Gaelic games such as Sam Maguire: Category:1879 in Gaelic games and Category:1927 in Gaelic games Gnevin (talk) 23:01, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

I don't think the players should be categorised into their year of birth - it makes no sense. eg Peter Canavan is categorised into Category:1971 in Gaelic games - but what would he have done in 1971? Another idea might be to include the years a player won an All-Star (or, to prevent duplicating the category of [year] All-Star, the year they won PotY), but have them hidden from the actual infobox.--Macca7174 _talk 15:16, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

I was in two minds as if to include the birth year, however i think it useful when you look at Category:1971_in_Gaelic_games and can see other players of his generation and for older players is very useful Category:1922_in_Gaelic_games , i also though well if their death is notable , isn't their birth ? . Individual clubs are notable - right?

Am I right in saying that GAA clubs are notable? Granagh-Ballingarry GAA was speedy-tagged within 1 minute of creation under WP:CSD#A7 for not asserting notability, despite the article stating that the club previously won the Limerick Senior Hurling Championship. The article was then deleted by an admin (User:SchuminWeb), before the creator or I had a chance to fix it up a bit. I've now had to go to the bitten creator and apologise for the admin abuse, and ask that he would continue to contribute. The admin restored it to my userspace so I moved it back into the mainspace - perhaps someone that knows a bit about Limerick GAA clubs may like to improve it, before it's deleted again! What are the notability criteria for GAA clubs, I thought all were considered notable, especially former championship winners? EJF (talk) 17:40, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

It would appear this a misunderstanding /poor communication, the pages wasn't deleted per A7 is was temp deleted as per G6 see[1] basiclly the page was created at Granagh/Ballingarry GAA forslashes are not allow so the admin , deleted and recreated at Granagh-Ballingarry GAA,the admin then noticed you where working on it on your talk page and deleted a redirect to your talk page Gnevin (talk) 18:24, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

Afraid not, it was created at Granagh/Ballingaryy GAA first, here is the deletion log. The actual article was deleted per A7, the G6 was because I immediately recreated the content, so he had to do a hist merge. GaelicGamesProject: Articles of unclear notability

Feedback from a WP:IE assessment drive

Hi folks

I hope you will forgive me for drawing your attention to a problem. I know that Gnevin and others are well aware of how things should be done, and are that like other WikiProjects this one has an ongoing task of tidying up the work done by less thorough editors who may not be aware of the standards ... so please please please don't take the following as any sort of pointing-the-finger. It's intended just to draw your attention to a problem, not to suggest any blame or guilt or anything!

I am nearing the end of a large assessment drive for WikiProject Ireland, in which I have assessed over 3500 articles in the last ten days and added quality and importance ratings to the {{WikiProject Ireland}} banner on the articles' talk pages.

A significant number of the articles related to this project, so I wanted raise with you folks a problem I found: referencing, or rather the lack of it.

This assessment drive focused on articles tagged as stubs, and included hundreds of GAA articles. Some of those tagged as stubs were well beyond stub length, which is fine, but the majority of the GAA articles I found of them were completely unreferenced, which is not good. I tried to tag any unreferenced articles with the {{unreferenced}} tag, and you may have noticed lots of them popping up in your watchlists.

Amongst those which were referenced, a significant number were referenced only to primary sources, i,e. to publications which are not independent of the article's subject. I tagged those articles with {{primarysources}}.

Even the articles which were referenced to independent sources mostly had one or more of the following problems:

Inline references of the form [http://somewhere.com.something], which displays as [2]. That gives the reader no idea of the nature of the reference, so it's much better to use <ref></ref> to generate a footnote
Those articles which did use <ref></ref>, tend to just use a bare URL within the reference tags, as in <ref>[http://somewhere.com.something]</ref>. As above, that's that's not very helpful to the reader
When the <ref></ref> tags are used, the footnotes will be displayed only if a {{reflist}} tag is included in the references section of the article. I found a number of articles where references had been included, but were not displayed because there was no references section. I tried to correct some of those, but didn't have the energy. See for example Raheny GAA: compare the article as I found it with this diff showing the effect of adding the {{reflist}}

I find that the easiest way of formatting references neatly and easily is to use the {{cite web}} and {{cite news}} templates. They can be a little intimidating at first, so it's worth spending a few minutes reading the documentation on the template pages, but once that's done, I find that the easiest way to use the templates is to create a little file in my text editor with partially-completed templates. I keep it open while editing, and it's very easy to copy-and-paste into an article. My list currently includes:

<ref>{{cite web |url= |title= |work= |accessdate=2008-03-24}}</ref>

<ref>{{cite web |url= |title= |author= |date= |work=The Irish Times |accessdate=2008-03-24}}</ref>

For the benefit of any editors new to the referencing system, the relevant guidelines are Wikipedia:Citing sources and Wikipedia:Footnotes.

I know you and others are only following policy BHG but when did it become such a hammer to beat people with ? I and others would need to quit life and become full time Wikipedians too address the numerous issue raised , when did this {{Primarysources}} crap become policy ? WP:V is getting as bad as User:Gnevin/images it's change every 10 minutes and the people making the single edit to a page and berating people for not following policy Gnevin (talk) 14:10, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

I'm really sorry that you see it as a hammer, and particularly that you appear to think I am trying to beat people with it. :( I have no particular expertise in GAA issues, but I tried to give what assistance I can to this project, and I don't see this as being any different -- pointing out areas in need of improvement.

I drew this problem to project's attention in as friendly way as I could (see my opening para above). Please can you assume good faith here?

There's nothing new about what I am pointing out here. Wikipedia:Verifiability is one of wikipedia's core policies, and the edit screen on every new article says at the top "As you create the article, provide references to reliable published sources. Without references, the article may be deleted". (Until a few months ago it said something similar below the edit box)

I'm sorry that you see the primary sources issue as "crap"; I'd have thought that it was a fairly basic point of verification not to rely solely on what a person or organisation says about themselves. It's certainly not new to have it explicitly stated in wikipedia -- checking back just in WP:V, I found it very clearly stated in a June 2006 version of the policy "Articles should rely on credible, third-party sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy. For academic subjects, the sources should preferably be peer-reviewed."

There are so any unreferenced GAA articles that I don't expect the problem to be fixed in fixed minutes; I know that this sort of thing takes time, and that time is in short supply. What I hoped to do by bringing the issue here was to draw the project's attention to a problem, in the hope that editors would avoid creating new unreferenced articles and would try along the way to fix existing articles.

This isn't myspace or a blog, it's an encyclopedia, and it has standards to uphold. The GAA is hugely important in Irish life, and I want too see good coverage of the GAA here ... but good isn't just a matter of width, it's also a matter of quality. Unreferenced articles fail Wikipedia's most basic inclusion requirement, and I don't want to see the GAA articles continuing to fail. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 17:21, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

That's OK, I didn't see any bad faith in your comment — frustration yes, bad faith no! — and I hope my reply didn't read as if I had seen some. However, per the links above, I don't think that policy has been fluid wrt to verifiability and primary sources; even from my cursory checks above it seems to have been fairly stable on the substance of those points (though not on the wording) since shortly after you and I joined wikipedia within three days of each other in early 2006. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 22:05, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

OK so no one is upset with the other :). As your primary point , it would appear the policy hasn't changed much in terms of context maybe just in the parts that are being highlighted,owe well. Kildare clubs need footnotes

My latest batch of assessments is of the Kildare clubs. Many of those articles are detailed and well-written with comprehensive ibliographies, but they have no footnotes. If anyone has the sources to check with, adding footnotes would bring many of them up to to B-class, and some would then be not far off good-article status. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs)

WP:IE has the same problem of a lack of active participants. What concerns me, though, about the GAA articles, is that such a high proportion of the articles fail the basic inclusion test of verifibaility. I have now finished my WP1.0 assessments of GAA articles, so I should no longer be filling up your watchlists :)

I just thought I'd leave you with a few disjointed final observations from my trawl:

Coverage of players, competitions and clubs seems to be imbalanced across counties, probably reflecting the interests of the editors who created the articles. Nothing wrong with that, but there are gaps to be filled if anyone is interested
As above, most articles I found are either unreferenced or referenced only to primary sources ... but a notable exception is the Northern Irish articles, where User:Derry Boi seems to be diligently referencing everything
Nearly all the articles on Laois players are very poor-quality stubs
Most of the articles on Kilkenny and Tipperary platers are well-written start-class articles providing good coverage of a career, but many of them contain unreferenced claims to greatness, usually along the lines of "he is widely regarded as one the greatest players ...". I have tried to tag such assertions with a {{fact}} tag, and they should really either be sourced or removed.
Most of the articles on competitions are structured in a way that's a bit unhelpful to anyone not already familiar with the subject (they assume prior knowledge). They should really have a lead section which briefly explains what the competition is, with links to terms such as hurling, gaelic football, Gaelic Athletic Association etc.

PS One other small thing: per Wikipedia:Guide to layout#Standard_appendices_and_descriptions, succession boxes and navigation templates should be at the end of the article, below the references, external links etc. I moved a few such boxes, but there are many more which need doing. It's not usually a huge issue, but I noticed that on the GAA articles, the presence of the infobox at the side pushes the full-width navigation templates (team lists) down below the infoboxes. On a short article, this has leaves a big dose of white space to the left of the infox, with the refs and external links out of sight on the next screenful, below the boxes. So the articles are much easier to read if the boxes are moved to the bottom: compare the before and after effects of the tweak on O'Dwyers GAA. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 15:49, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Freely licensed images.

Just to let youse know images on the Ulster Council's website are all licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License (unless otherwise stated). They're mostly Ulster pictures and there's not that many up, but would say more will be put up over the season. There's some decent images of Peter Canavan, Oisín McConville, Paddy Bradley, Kieran McGeeney and others there. The gallery is located here and there's a few other pictures around the site as well. Aye its a bit annoying, but if you right-click on them before the little hand icon comes up, you can select view image and then save it from there. You just have to get the timing right as too late and you won't be able to select view and too early and the image won't be loaded properly (and sometimes can be a bit dark). Non-notable competitions

I have nominated Laois Junior "C" Hurling Championship for deletion: see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Laois Junior "C" Hurling Championship.

I have no argument with the notability of the senior competitions, because they are widely covered ... but not everything to do with the GAA receives sufficient coverage to be considered notable, and I doubt that the Junior C competition receives much more than listings coverage even in Laois. This level of detail is great for a GAA website, or for a GAA-focused website such as http://www.hoganstand.com, but Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information and the junior competitions appear to fail the notability test. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:14, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

http://www.gaainfo.com/ This site claims to have all the results from the inter county championships since 1991. It does have results, but the dates are all wrong. It would be useful for the incomplete championship articles.--Macca7174 _talk 11:25, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your interest in my site - gaainfo.com. As you can see I have been trying to organise GAA information focusing on a database driven statistics approach and hope to eventually build an archive of Inter-county stats back to the 1800's. I believe it will be complementory to Wikipedia and I obviously have no intention of duplicating the articles on clubs, counties and competitions that have been put together on Wikipedia. (Wikipedia doesnt have a database system in place, i think).

I'm also looking for volunteers to help out (either results checkers, researchers or just people with ideas and suggestions). What does the members of the Gaelic Games WikiProject think of this?

The reason I'm posting here is that I thought that I should note that unfortunately there's a steady trickle of vandalism to GAA articles, which I have been reverting when I see it (this is the latest example).

As a consequence of my article assessment drive for WikiProject Ireland, I have a lot of GAA articles on my watchlist. I am about to start trimming my watchlist a lot because it has gotten too huge (over 25,000 articles), so I won't be watching these articles any more, and thought that some members of this project might like fill their own watchlists so that they can track vandalism. (I just look edits by anonymous IPs, because a significant proportion of those are vandalism).

There are plenty of reasons why people might not want to do this, but if anyone does want to do so, I can easily use BHGbot to make a list, which you can just copy-paste into your watchlist. There are currently 2265 GAA articles (not counting templates or categories), so it's nothing like as huge as my own watchlist.

Another possibility is to create a sub-page of this project with such a list, and to use the related changes feature to see what's happening. Again, BHGBot can generate such a list, but I won't do anything unless folks here want it. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 17:10, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Non-free images

There is an excess of non-free images in this project Image:Corkcrest.gif is used in 34 articles, at best one can be justified, there are free alternatives to most of these crest available at [6], and these crest were used up to quite recently by all county teams. WP has a m:mission, and in a coutry like Ireland (North and South) there is no provision for fair use, and it would be nice if this project was usable there. Player championship appearances

Hi all. If you click on my user name you'll a template I created for showing each individual championship appearance for a give player. It was a previously used template on Dan Shanahan but I update it by putting a cyan border on it to match the player templates and also added a column for putting in match reports.

I'm in the process of adding this template to each and every Waterford player. If anyone wants to assist, especially in the Waterford players, I have a list of Waterford matches already filled into the template on my user page. To find what a player scored in that match or if he indeed played in that match, just click on the match report.

I hope to keep updating this backwards with older matches over time.

This seems like it would require a incredible amount of work, not to mention an encyclopedic level of knowledge for each individual player - there was a Saturday this year when eight football matches were played (that's up to forty players a match, for each match, totaling 320 tables we would have to fill in. Playing Devil's advocate for the outside Wiki community - if these were completed for every player, it would take up a huge amount of space.

It's an interesting proposition, but for now at least, it would be better improving the textual aspects of any articles. Good work.--Macca7174 _talk 16:33, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
