Standards[edit]

OK, new project, new standards. My suggestions, which will be implemented if no objections arise:

'===Seasons=== Each season should have its own page, title will take one of the following forms:

  1. 2005 in IROC
  2. 2005 in the International Race of Champions
  3. IROC XXIX (In this case, I would recommend that 2005 in IROC be a redirect.)

Each season should mention who won the races in that season, where those races were, who won the season itself, a complete points listing, and links to each race'

Races[edit]

Each race should have its own page, title will take one of the following forms:

  1. 2005 IROC, Race One
  2. 2005 International Race of Champions, Race One
  3. IROC XXIX, Race One

Each race page should have a detailed listing of how long the race was, where it was, complete listing of results, and a generous summary.

Drivers[edit]

Each driver should be notable enough to already have their own page, so we shouldn't have to worry about that. We should, however, make sure that their IROC history is well represented in their page, especially if they were fortunate enough to win.

Tracks[edit]

Each track should be notable enough to already have their own page, so we shouldn't have to worry about that. We should, however, make sure that their IROC history is well represented in their page.

Discussion[edit]

Failing comments/suggestions to the contrary, these will become standards at or about 31 July 2006. -slowpokeiv 01:30, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Agree with proposed inclusion standards. Drivers, tracks, and races should be all notable without exception, for this is an all-star series. As for the seasons and races, I think that form #3 should be used for both since that is how they are always refered. --Royalbroil 04:15, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Agree Notability shouldn't be a concern. Roman numerals should be used for the seasons as well. Also, do championships count as career wins? --D-Day I'm all ears How can I improve? 16:01, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Re: Championships, I would say that race wins should count for IROC race wins, but not as a NASCAR or IRL or CART or Champ Car, etc. Championships certainly count as awards, to be included in any infobox present, but I wouldn't down play the race wins themselves. -slowpokeiv 04:04, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Agree as suggestor, agree with form #3 with redirects on the seasons, when applicable. (IROC I - VII were ran in pats of two years each, finishing Daytona, Feb. To say 1974 in IROC might be misleading...)
  • Agree per above. Anyone have any input on whether season articles should have a format like 2005 in NASCAR listing (what would be fairly complete) results for each race, or if the each season should just have a table listing the winners of each race. Also, any input regarding if we will be using flags or not? -Drdisque 06:18, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I would suggest brief summaries on the season pages with race winners (w/flags) on that page. I would further suggest that each race page would have complete listings table, with flags, and a full race report. Yes, the racers are mostly from the USA, but not exclusively, and as such, flags would be appropriate. -slowpokeiv 17:55, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I like the idea of flags. There is just barely enough international flavor to make it worth including. I like the level of detail presented in the 2005 in NASCAR article - at least the average level of detail. Some race summaries should be longer, some relatively short. --Royalbroil 01:07, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Championship succession boxes[edit]

Please move this if it isn't in the right spot - I have a couple of suggestions about the Champion Succession boxes. Firstly, if a person wins the championship back-to-back (or 3 times in a row, as Mark Martin did), I'd suggest that all three of those years be put into the same box, as I've done on the Mark Martin page. Secondly, why are the championship years referred to by roman numerals instead of the years? Is this an IROC convention? -- DiegoTehMexican 16:27, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

IROC has used the Roman numerals since at least the early 1980s. I think it would be fine to include the calendar year in parentheses - just the way you did it. Kudos! --Royalbroil 18:13, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Slowpokeiv was the one who added the years and Roman numerals; I just condensed the three-year stretch into one box. -- DiegoTehMexican 22:45, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Using slowpokeiv's format for the succession boxes, I've added them to all of the champions' pages. -- DiegoTehMexican 23:45, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Good Job, it looks nice! --Royalbroil 04:54, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Steve Millen nominated on DYK[edit]

I have nominated the new Steve Millen article for DYK. I'd like to see an article from the WikiProject represented on the main page. Please improve the article if you can. We could change the DYK nomination to also include a new 1995 IROC season page (make it a joint nomination), but it would have to be VERY SOON. The article has to run on DYK within 5 days of creation to be considered a new article according to the DYK rules. THANKS! --Royalbroil 18:16, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The article is currently listed on DYK, the first for the fledgling WikiProject. Enjoy! --Royalbroil 02:56, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Woah, I've been sleeping.. Way to go Royalbroil! -slowpokeiv 16:28, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

IROC XXIX[edit]

All right, I've started the IROC XXIX page in accordance with the standards agreed upon above. However, I am not convinced that we need seperate pages for each race - the main article will not be nearly as long as 2005 in NASCAR, by virtue of only having four races, and I think that we could include the in-depth information on the main page. - DiegoTehMexican 22:43, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was wondering if there was enough data to warrant individual pages too. I think we should try season summaries first, then later create race pages if necessary. Royalbroil 14:38, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • I agree, I think one page per season (which includes all four races) is suitable. Doctorindy 12:23, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Open Wheel racing/IRL/CART proposed solution discussion[edit]

There is a discussion going on here for any open wheel fans. The discussion is about how to deal with the problem of the number of sanctioning bodies that have sponsored the series, and how to present the transition in Wikipedia. Royalbroil 04:38, 14 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

IROC Template[edit]

I'm working on an IROC template (footer) for the tracks used in IROC. Trying to utilitze a format which will show the current tracks, and former tracks used. Should be up soon Doctorindy 12:24, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

    • Also, I'm going to create a new category....."IROC tracks"....should be active soon. Doctorindy 12:26, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds awesome, look forward to it. :) -slowpokeiv 15:44, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Need for a WikiProject: Motorsport?[edit]

Do we need a WikiProject Motorsport for collaboration on topics that affect all motorsport articles? I came across Wikipedia:WikiProject_Rugby - the purpose of which is to "maintain its children Wikiprojects: Rugby league and Rugby union as well as recognising, organising and improving the common areas between the codes." Now we have a lot more Motorsport WikiProjects covered than two and I sometimes think stuff such as the UK country discussion on the F1 Wikiproject applies across several others. I'm posting this on the F1, WRC, NASCAR, American Open Wheel Racing, A1GP and IROC to get people's opinions. Your comments are welcome! Alexj2002 21:06, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm in. I am a member of three of the WikiProjects (IROC, NASCAR, and American Open Wheel). I am knowledgable and often work on areas of racing that lie outside these specific genres, like midget cars, off-road racing, sprint cars, non-NASCAR stockcars, national series that tour local tracks in the United States, and other national series in the United States. These "missed" areas could be managed/organized by the meta-WikiProject. A meta-WikiProject to encompass all types of racing is needed. Royalbroil T : C 02:35, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Need for WikiProject American Motorsports or WikiProject North American Motorsports?[edit]

I think there a need for a WikiProject about all motorsports in America that are not covered under other existing WikiProjects: WP:NASCAR, WP:IROC, WP:American Open Wheel Racing, Sports Car Racing, etc. The WikiProject would be similiar to Wikipedia:WikiProject British Motorsport in scope. The introduction would be "WikiProject American/North American aims to create, expand, update and standardize Wikipedia articles related to Motorsport in the United States/North America." Other WikiProject would replace the article marking template with their own as a driver moves up through the ranks.

I propose a WikiProject would encompass all motorsport articles in the United States, and I am asking for input if it should include Canada and Mexico. There is a fair bit of border hopping into Canada by NASCAR (especially with the new NASCAR Canadian Tire Series), and I would like to see the Baja 1000 included in the WikiProject.

It could be either organized as a parent of WikiProject NASCAR/WikiProject IROC, or as an equal. It would not do oversight of the WikiProjects, as that is covered by the new WikiProject Motorsports. Applicable articles would include notable racetracks, drivers, halls of fame, sanctioning bodies, etc. A sample of specific articles would include: ARCA, American Speed Association, IMCA, UMP, World of Outlaws, CORR, SODA (series), USAR Hooters Pro Cup, National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame, National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame, Mike Eddy, Manzanita Speedway, Knoxville Raceway, Lake Geneva Raceway, Crandon International Off-Road Raceway, Berlin Raceway, Bonneville Speedway, Knoxville Nationals, Dirt track racing in the United States just to name a few. I have been spending much of my time recently improving this part of Wikipedia.

What does everyone think? Does anyone else have interests in some of these areas? Royalbroil T : C 15:50, 20 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I officially proposed it here. I amended it slightly. Please add your name there if interested. Royalbroil T : C 15:19, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Day Awards[edit]

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 19:29, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Possible photo[edit]

I took a photo of Richard Petty's restored IROC I Porsche Carrera RSR at a historics display at the 24 Hours of Daytona a few days ago. I don't believe there are any photos of the IROC I Porsches on Wikipedia, so I figured this might be a good addition for the group. The image here is shrunk, I have the 1600x1200 original I can upload if you guys feel its worth adding. The359 22:16, 30 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That's awesome! Please upload! The image is excellent. Do upload the larger original as you suggested. Do you have any other pics of Daytona USA or Daytona Speedway that you'd like to contribute? Any pics of the 24 Hours of Daytona? Do you have anything to add to any of these articles, especially Daytona USA? I went to Daytona USA in 2001, and the article is very dated. Royalbroil T : C 03:32, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Photograph uploaded at Image:IROCPorsche.jpg. I did not go into Daytona USA (not worth $20) but I do have plenty of other pictures from around Daytona Speedway from throughout the 24 Hours of Daytona that could be used for other articles. I'll see about those later. The359 06:27, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough about Daytona USA. I added Petty's IROC car to the Richard Petty and IROC articles. Would you add the car's year to the articles? The 24 Hours of Daytona has zero pictures. It would be great if you would upload pictures of each class of car, especially the prototype cars. Thanks! Royalbroil T : C 02:44, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Changes in Templates[edit]

Hi, I'm currently making some changes over on the WikiProject Motorsport Assessment Page. Look in the statistics section. Only 240 articles have the template WikiProject Motorsport on it. I'm thererfore going to propose something (I think this has been discussed a while back). Can every single Motorsport article have the template on it's talk page. My reasoning for this is that some drivers have only the Formula One template on the article. However, surely (by the way, this goes for virtually all articles), they haven't got to Formula One someway. They haven't just been thrown into F1, I don't think any drivers done that. They've gone through other forms of Motorsport. Therefore, surely the Wikipedia Motorsport template is needed for every single Motorsport article?. I'm going to do a vote on this (on this page, plus the Motorsport project and all the child projects) so we can get a decision on this. By the way, don't bother voting on different projects, as only one of your votes will count! Davnel03 16:53, 5 March 2007 (UTC) [reply]

For future reference and curiosity.[edit]

When we get a 1999 in IROC page, someone should note that Alex Zanardi crashed (or was involved in crashes) 5 times during the four races (yeah he crashed twice in one race) throughout the season. Previously noted on F1Rejects.com until they took the Zanardi page away in 2001 due to his massive accident. -- Guroadrunner 12:41, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Motorsport Library[edit]

I've made a suggestion at WikiProject Motorsport for a list of hardcopy references and who holds them, to help with referencing articles. This was prompted by the realisation that I have access to quite a lot of material which I'm not currently using. Please comment here. Cheers. 4u1e 16:46, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Standard race track infobox[edit]

There is a discussion at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Motorsport#Circuit_Infoboxes about creating a standard infobox for all race tracks regardless of their sanctioning body or type. Please join the discussion there to ensure that all of our concerns are met. Royalbroil 13:31, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Inactive, direction to go[edit]

This WikiProject was tagged inactive, and I'm wondering if it should be closed. The IROC series appears to be closed. Otherwise should the scope would be broadened into say "American stock cars". It could also be changed into a taskforce under WikiProject Motorsport. I will propose it to become closed if no one responds. Royalbroil 13:41, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • With IROC apparently discontinued, there won't be a need for new activity beyond minor cleanup of IROC-specific articles. This makes the project too limited in scope for its own project, but it isn't meaningless. I think the best course would be to fold WikiProject IROC into WikiProject Motorsport as a taskforce, as Royalbroil suggested. Might as well treat it as a merge to keep any relevant talkpage history (archive it as a subpage of the project's taskforce section). Expanding the scope to "American stock cars" would be way off-topic; IROC was representative of only a tiny part of contemporary stock car racing, and was representative of none of its ordinary history. Barno (talk) 15:28, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • I agree. Save for some 11th hour revival, I think we're pretty much done here. I think a taskforce is the way to go.Mustang6172 (talk) 02:36, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
      • Add another vote for the taskforce. Blueracer6 (talk) 04:54, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
        • I recommend closing it period. There isn't enough left to do to make it worth it to spend the time to create something different. Any discussions about the series as a whole could be done at WikiProject Motorsports (WP:MOTOR). Many biographies are part of other WikiProjects anyhow. Royalbroil 13:27, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
          • From what I've read, IROC closed its doors, and sold off all of its cars, equipment, and it is over. Due to the modern landscape of the sport, it's a sure bet it is gone forever. The format of the original IROC premis is not even attainable anymore, since many drivers in various series (other than NASCAR) are contracturally prohibited from running in other series. The project is no longer needed, since everything is past tense. Finish up any loose ends, and end it altogether. Doctorindy (talk) 16:09, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Agree, I don't think there's anything left to do. Every article except the season pages is a member of some combination of WP:NASCAR, WP:AOWR, WP:SCR, or WP:F1. I don't see how a taskforce would do anything on what is essentially "finished" project.-Drdisque (talk) 17:33, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    • Since there's not much need for a taskforce I suppose we could just add it to "Category:Defunct sports leagues" and be done with it.Mustang6172 (talk) 21:09, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
      • I think that as long as we get the season pages finished up under one of the other WikiProjects, there is no harm in ending it alltogether. I think my main fear is leaving it here half finished. Blueracer6 (talk) 22:58, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I also agree with the suggestion to closing the WP and turn it into a taskforce, considering it is not much use of a WP about a defunct series. I'm not sure about the stock car racing taskforce as the series started out with Porsche 911s which might betray things a bit, but will have no objections for it. Comment on the WikiProject X proposal[edit]

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject X is live![edit]

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.
