Township Establishment Category[edit]

I am wondering, should we be putting in category establishments on all these townships? Example Category:1876 establishments for one or another. If we should be doing this, I will have to start doing it from now on. I should have asked this before I started redoing them all. I will wait until I get at least one response back before starting to do this to all new articles. Would have to go back sometime or another to add them for all the others.--Kranar drogin 21:53, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Templates Complete[edit]

I have finished the templates off finally. I will prolly be getting the rest of the templates up to par with the others soon enough.--Kranar drogin 11:42, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Request for precinct maps for Monroe County[edit]

Or if someone could point me at any availible resources and I could accomplish this task myself. PreciousRoi (talk) 20:02, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I believe I can provide these maps; I'll check on it and get back to you. Omnedon (talk) 19:18, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks...I wwas hoping someone knew where to find images consistent with the rest used herePreciousRoi (talk) 21:59, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think that this page from here was the basis of some of the township maps. Monroe county has 27 precincts for election and census purposes, but the IRAD page only lists 10 precinct names and the map on that page does not divide the county into 10 sections nor does it label them by name. This Census book also has maps like this one, but not very helpful for counties with no township government. Sorry, but the source used to create the other maps don't work well for the counties with precincts, which is probably why they were not done. --Dual Freq (talk) 22:20, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, the 10 'named' precincts (well 8 if them did) have existed since before Illinois was a state...I would hate to think that they've been abandoned...all of the early history of the county is based on them. I have a good map showing their boundaries, but not consistent with rest of wiki. I guess I could bodge something together, if I had to. I had hoping to deal with the history of the county based on these precincts. Translating the 10 precincts into 27 would be nightmarish, as well as meaningless, worse useless from a geographical point of view. PreciousRoi (talk) 22:32, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
How about a consistent "empty" map of Monroe County?PreciousRoi (talk) 22:46, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

When you say consistent, can you link to an example county map that you want to be consistent with. There are several different types that I remember. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmonroe/ has a a map, but we can't directly use it. I think the 27 precincts are smaller divisions used for Census and not terribly historical. However, it will be hard to get current census information for the 10 precincts since the Census folks use 27. --Dual Freq (talk) 22:57, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, they would be useless for anything aside from historical purposes. I was working off this, which was consistent with the 10 precincts named on the IRAD page, so I thought I was golden. I was hoping for something like Image:Hardin Precinct Calhoun.PNG (I can't figure out how to link to an image without opening it, heh...the 27 precincts have almost nothing in common with the historical ones, any resemblance is incidental (there is almost none) PreciousRoi (talk) 23:26, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't even notice before, but the map I linked above only has 9 and the names don't match. Many of the other counties I've looked at seemed to follow the lines of the survey townships, but this one is not even close to those. User:Kranar drogin is the originator of those maps, I think he just traced the maps with an image program. I don't think I can make one of those. Sorry. Maybe Omnedon can make one, but I kind of doubt that the tiger data used to make this one will work on Monroe County. --Dual Freq (talk) 23:44, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Meh, too bad...they are great for geographical and historic purposes. I'll have to ask someone up at the courthouse for a map to correct all the archaic information I've been adding. Stupid numbered precincts...convey exactly no information...PreciousRoi (talk) 23:57, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Here is a preliminary map of Monroe County highlighting the precincts according to the census TIGER data: Image:Precincts of Monroe County, Illinois.svg. However, it is divided up into 12 larger precincts, and several much smaller ones that relate to the cities. These are the numbered precincts. I'm still researching this... If this map seems to be useful, I can label it. Omnedon (talk) 03:33, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, would you happen to be able to point me toward something which would enable me to poitively locate the unincorporated communities by numbered precinct? Right now, I'd have to guess at some of them. Also, any sources you've run across which would indicate when the change from the 10 precincts was made...appears fairly obvious why the change was made...I know works published as late as the 60s referenced them, however these were derivative, if scholarly, works, almost assuredly drawing from the histories which were so popular in the 1880s...PreciousRoi (talk) 11:29, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. I wrote some code that takes a town's coordinates and looks up the township (or precinct) using the TIGER map data, and here's a list of the unincorporated towns in Monroe County. A few of these aren't mentioned in the county article and may not exist any more, but they are still recognized by the USGS, so I thought I'd post the whole list just in case. Does this look right to you?

  • Ames - Precinct 9
  • Burksville - Precinct 12
  • Burksville Station - Precinct 8
  • Chalfin Bridge - Precinct 15
  • Foster Pond (historical) - Precinct 22
  • Fountain - Precinct 15
  • Fountain Gap - Precinct 11
  • Harrisonville - Precinct 15
  • Ivy - Precinct 13
  • Kidd - Precinct 13
  • Madonnaville - Precinct 23
  • Merrimac - Precinct 15
  • Millstadt Junction - Precinct 4
  • Mitchie - Precinct 15
  • Monroe City - Precinct 15
  • New Hanover - Precinct 11
  • Renault - Precinct 9
  • Saint Joe - Precinct 23
  • Tipton - Precinct 8
  • Warnock - Precinct 15
  • Wartburg - Precinct 12

Hope that helps. As to the history of the precinct changes, I haven't yet found anything on that. Omnedon (talk) 13:11, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, those look right, I had thought Ames was in Randolph Co. but, upon further examination, it is within Monroe. Damn, I was congratulating myself on "completeing" Monroe County...Ames and Burksville Station are probably worth adding though...Warnock, Fountain Gap, Ivy, Millstadt Junction, and Kidd perhaps less so...around here a settlement isn't notable unless it has a church and/or tavern, dunno if any of them every qualified...I'll have to get around to it though, I supposePreciousRoi (talk) 17:41, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
