Informal requested move

I am proposing to move User:Titodutta/Condensed proposed roadmap for Wikimedia work in IndiaWikipedia:WikiProject India/Condensed proposed roadmap for Wikimedia work in India in "as it is" condition. I started this draft to show to our En WP community members and use as "reference" in discussions. Most probably, this is the only "in-wiki" report we have. If WMF/WMIN/CIS does anything later at Meta or project page, our En WP page may be used as a reference. --TitoDutta 20:25, 17 October 2014 (UTC)

Yes, completely agree with the move. This will provide much wider visibility to the proposed roadmap.--Dwaipayan (talk) 22:40, 17 October 2014 (UTC)

I agree with the move. Jim Carter 03:17, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
  • Yes, why not? Can others edit it? --AmritasyaPutraT 13:46, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
  • Sure, why not?  :) --TitoDutta 15:15, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

First half of October's unorganized discussions

From right after the ICC, we started discussing on issues, but these discussions were mostly unorganized, we were discussing here and there. I am copying some "on-wiki" discussions to"put all in one place. I'll not copy FB discussions for privacy and copyright issues. Am I missing anything? Please add below. --TitoDutta 02:12, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

If you guys get any notification, sorry for that. Please ignore it.

Report from ICC 2014

Copied from WP India noticeboard. In this discussion the noticeboard was informed about the roadmap.

Here is an unofficial draft of tyhe roadmap planned at ICC 2014: User:Titodutta/Condensed proposed roadmap for Wikimedia work in India --TitoDutta 19:52, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

Can we ask for any clarifications here or at some other venues ? --Vigyanitalkਯੋਗਦਾਨ 02:34, 7 October 2014 (UTC)
  • They may or will make some pages sooner or later at Meta. I may try to answer if you have questions. --TitoDutta 02:44, 7 October 2014 (UTC)
  • [1] I couldn't understand what [STOP] Intervening in communities without community approval exactly means. what kind of intervention and who should not intervene ? --Vigyanitalkਯੋਗਦਾਨ 02:50, 7 October 2014 (UTC)
  • [2] [STOP] Disallowing English (or other foreign) on Wikipedia,--Vigyanitalkਯੋਗਦਾਨ 02:52, 7 October 2014 (UTC)
  • Answer 1) It means decisions should be taken after discussing on-wiki and reaching a consensus. It means Wikimedia India chapter can not force a consensus on WikiProject India. Similarly we can not force Tamil or Telugu Wikipedia to do anything. It should be discussed first. 2) Some local language Wikipedias don't allow English/Roman letters in their Wiki. If you go to their Wiki, and type "abcd" or any thing else in English, they will not allow you to save the edit (there is an automated process now, the you can not save edit with a blackisted URL here) User:Shyamal raised this issue.
BTW, will you attend if I nominate your name in next year's conference or whenever I'll get chance (they will bear expenses)? --TitoDutta 03:15, 7 October 2014 (UTC)
  • Thanks for the clarifications. So these STOPs are not for normal users. Presently, I live outside India. I will try to attend, if I am in India at the time of the conference. I missed the chance in 2011, that time I was living very close to the conference venue. I was not very active that time :(. --Vigyanitalkਯੋਗਦਾਨ 03:49, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

Reaching out to English Wikipedians in and from India

Copied from User talk:Titodutta. Ravi started a discussion on reaching out to English Wikipedians in and from India.

I am trying to understand the best way to reach as many en wikipedians from india through a single channel. Will forming a FB group help? Can someone of you take this initiative? Please advise if there are better ways. --Ravishankar (talk) 13:00, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

  • Namaste Ravi-ji, yes, we'll check it and inform you. --TitoDutta 13:04, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, Tito. Please call me Ravi. No Sir or Ji, please :)--Ravishankar (talk) 13:23, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

Copied from WikiProject India noticeboard. Ravi raised the same issue at India noticeboardd too. Well done.

I am trying to understand the best way to reach as many en wikipedians from india through a single channel. Will forming a FB group help? Can someone of you take this initiative? Please advise if there are better ways. I havr already subscribed to https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-in-en and https://www.facebook.com/WikimediaIndiaEnglish --Ravishankar (talk) 13:22, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

For now the mailing list doesnt seem very active. The last conversations happened in June'14. The last post on the FB page was Feb 2013. In my view, I would think this notice board perhaps is the most active forum of all to reach out to Wikipedians from India focusing on English wikipedia. I will request others to revert as well. Arunram (talk) 15:39, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
  • Arun ji has given the best answer. --TitoDutta 16:02, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
FB group won't be much useful as not all user would join the group as people have FB accounts on real names and its not worth it to open a separate FB for wikiname just to join a group. I agree with Arunram. Whats wrong with this page itself? §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 05:21, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

Sitush is needed

Copied from User talk:Sitush where he was directly asked for the second time to break retirement and come back to lead the community initiatives of En WP.

We have much much more important works in hand than those IAC, we have CoTM restart, EnWP India community organization etc, see User:Titodutta/Condensed proposed roadmap for Wikimedia work in India'

And our proposed leader is gone from En WP. When are you returning ? --TitoDutta 19:32, 17 October 2014 (UTC)

@Titodutta:
Wow, that is a very ambitious list of projects. Is this part of the India WikiProject? Or, maybe that's what you mean by EnWP India community organization.
There's a lot there that is out of my reach, but I've just written a couple of dozen or so articles about India - mostly places, towns, or biographies. If I can help out a little with articles that are not likely to be contentious, I would be happy to kick in a bit of effort.--CaroleHenson (talk) 19:59, 17 October 2014 (UTC)
  • Yes, those are recent Wikimedia India Conference's "ideas" (Bangalore, 4-5 October). #Community is mainly our works, but, we can spread and take over other works as well. First thing we need is "community organization" and we need Sitush to lead the project. -- TitoDutta 20:09, 17 October 2014 (UTC)
  • Gotcha. That sounds a little tricky if he's retired and is in poor health. Good luck, though, it sounds like an interesting program.--CaroleHenson (talk) 20:14, 17 October 2014 (UTC)

Interested to get involved

Titodutta, I just read through this and your travel caught my attention, I am traveling to Bangalore this Friday night! (I first wrote and wrote thinking it is this weekend and figured out it was the last one!) Do you think I can be put to some use? I am active only on English Wikipedia (but plan to move to Hindi, and Sanskrit, I can speak and understand Bengali, and Marathi also). I have good subject knowledge in Hindi literature (old, new, and poems too). I went through the India Community Consultation 2014 article page and its talk page and I think it will have some more info shortly... there is a lot of info there... Can I edit your "Condensed roadmap..." page? I was involved with Project Gutenberg digitisation project also and have worked with OCR (barely working), TTS (mostly poor), spell checker(quite okay these days) for Hindi. The intent is "I am interested and willing to get involved" and would greatly appreciate individual guidance to make the most of my ability. Thank you. --AmritasyaPutraT 10:42, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

Proposed roadmap

Copied from User talk:Ijon. He was informed about the page move.

I am feeling glad to inform you that the userpage draft I started has been promoted and move to project space now and may be accessed here at WP:RMI. Please see the discussion at its talk page. (RMI stands for "Roadmap India") ... ... ...

The grand initiatives you took, must be taken forward, but everyday I am losing energy. Believe it or not, the "India Against Corruption" is the third dispute I have been working in currently. There are a couple of more. Anyway, we/youP need to take these "proposed roadmap" works forward. --TitoDutta 01:00, 21 October 2014 (UTC)

Thank you, Tito, this is great work, and surely will be the basis for much work in the near future. I am sorry I have not been able to engage directly so far, but will be making time very soon. . . . . . .
I'll keep you posted about developments. Ijon (talk) 22:47, 21 October 2014 (UTC)

Tito, I greet and congratulate you for your best endeavour. అహ్మద్ నిసార్ (talk) 05:57, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

Re: Write articles according to the most-searched-for list

THE most-searched-for list? No such thing exists. There were many discussions about "failed searches" since at least 2004, but no outcome ever. --Nemo 09:10, 13 November 2014 (UTC)

Hi Nemo. Could you point to some of these important discussions for my own learning? This comes up for discussion off and on, on Telugu Wikipedia, and I could pass on the links. Thanks. --Vishnu (talk) 15:32, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

MMS right

Just above I proposed better communication and reporting system. Right after that I got busy with some other tasks and my own RFA.
Anyway. I, User:Titodutta, need the following right on En Wiki for now—

Probably being an admin, I can directly grant myself this right. But, I'll not do it. People will get hardly 1 or maximum 2 message(s) in a month from us. You may endorse this request, and I'll ask someone to give me this flag. --Tito Dutta (talk) 09:57, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

Endorsements

  • You don't need endorsement. MMS tools are included in admin tools. You don't need that right separately. Go here and send messages. In case you need assistance with MMS tools, ask me. Or I could send messages on your behalf. Cheers, Jim Carter 10:05, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
  • Facepalm Facepalm I did not know it. Still, let's have a talk on it, do we guys want to use this tool to communicate to our users? --Tito Dutta (talk) 10:08, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
  • We can use the tool to notify others about anything new or send them updates. In short we can use it to send a single message to multiple users. We can use it unless the messages we will be sending are spams. ;) Do you have anything to send multiple users? Jim Carter 10:46, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
