Breaking down into subpages (like WPLouisville)

I just wanted to gauge interest in breaking down the project page into subpages or departments, like what is done in WikiProject Louisville. It has turned out to be a much cleaner approach, in my opinion. Thoughts? Stevie is the man! Talk • Work 15:34, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

I would support elements of this change. The membership department would help the page flow, as our list is becoming unwieldy. However, I'd prefer the Hall of Fame stay up-front, as I think it encourages people to try and get more articles listed there.
While we're on the subject, It seems we've completely dropped the ball on the Focus of the Month. We need to move that section down or remove it completely. The fact that we still have nominations open for November, and no one has added one or made any significant improvements to the current noms in months makes our project look a little dead. OK, I can start by creating a membership department. And I agree that the Focus of the Month isn't working, as it wasn't working in WPLouisville either. Speaking of which, I have started doing a rough up of a possible new front page/daughter pages of the Project on my User Space. Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful. My main concern is to shorten the pages so that they are not OMG long. The link for the draft is User:Soldan/wpkydraft. Please feel free to mark up and change things as you want. I also like the infobox. Since we're planning to redesign the page anyway, let me get this part straight. Do we need to edit the scope section to mention that articles about Louisville are part of WikiProject Louisville, articles about the Bluegrass region are in WikiProject Bluegrass region, etc.? I had been using both WikiProject Kentucky and the appropriate subproject banner, but it looks like WikiProject Louisville has been replacing the WikiProject Kentucky banner, so I started doing that, using both only for highly notable items to both projects (e.g. Frankfort, Kentucky goes both in WikiProject Kentucky and WikiProject Bluegrass Region). As far as being active on the project itself, I think it's just us three amigos. However, I have seen Dale Arnett still making Kentucky-related changes now and again. I used to see Seicer and Chris24 around a lot more than I have lately. There's also a new guy, Veracious Rey, but so far about all I've noticed from him is edits about Boone County. On regards to the project page, I am thinking of scratching the "News" section from the front page, to move it to a rear, and use our front page mainly to show our scope, some tasks at hand, and thinks like templates, including how to use them (similar to the WP Military History site.Soldan 19:19, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

Question regarding the split b/t WP Kentucky and WP Louisville and WP BR.

I do not understand why the project was split into smaller projects (WP Louisville, and WP Bluegrass Region). It seems to me that it would of been beneficial to everyone by making a Louisville Task Force, and a BR Task force, which would of in turn kept FA's and the like from those areas in house. However, it is done now, and as such I don't think we can do much about it, but if say there is ever a want for a WP Purchase... we make a task force.Soldan 19:19, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

I see both sides here. I can pretty much understand the desire for a separate project for Louisville, but not so much for Bluegrass Region (maybe Lexington) and definitely not for KYOVA. I'm from one of those usually neglected areas of Kentucky, and I pretty much made a one-man task force for Western Coal Fields for a while. I do lament the fact that we now only have 2 Featured and 1 Good Article with the removal of the Louisville articles. We lose some more potentially Good and Featured when we take out Lexington and Ashland. Acdixon 19:43, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
The task force basis, as is used in WP:WAR each task force acts akin to its own Project, but it all comes under the head of the Project. Basically it's the same thing as what has happened, but without neutering the state project.Soldan 20:05, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
Definitely a great argument can be made for making regions into task forces rather than separate projects. Further, with regards to the best Louisville articles, I think it would be all right to feature them in a future Kentucky portal as part of the mix of other Kentucky articles that are featured. That last bit actually made me feel better. I was mainly worried about the baby projects neutering the parent if you know what I mean. Now that you mention it, I guess it does make sense if they are descendant WikiProjects to feature their Good and Featured articles in the parent project's Hall of Fame. Perhaps we should note which ones come from descendant WikiProjects, though, so there isn't confusion between the numbers showing in the assessment table and the number of articles in the Hall of Fame. Further, I think you will need to state the specific policy violation in play here. Just saying there's a violation doesn't make a violation. Projects are set up to oversee sets of articles and other sorts of pages. And your changes were found to be disagreeable by one member, me, of this project. Stub questions

Here's a philosophical question I must ask in regard to the rating of articles as "stubs". For a few of the articles I have created, I have used all available resources--not simply web searches--to write the article. Although the article may be short (e.g., Kenny Price), does that warrant a stub rating? I have contributed to several print encyclopedias and several of those articles would be considered stubs simply because the editors have limited the number of words for the article. While that is not a Wikipedia consideration, are we correctly rating articles or simply evaluating their lengths and assuming that they are stubs? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Spacini (talk • contribs) 21:52, 13 January 2007 (UTC).

Per the assessment system, very short length can qualify an article as a stub, but if there is significant useful content, short articles should rise to start class. That being said, while doing ratings en masse, I have been guilty of making a snap judgment based on length. If you would like an article reassessed, please note it on the appropriate place on the assessment page. Acdixon 22:54, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
I'm with Acdixon on this one. I too could be considered guilty when doing the ratings en masse to just make a snap decision based on length. However, I try to save the stub rating for those articles that have the stub tag on them, or obviously stubs.Soldan 14:14, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

Possible Good Article - William Goebel

So I was bored today and made a stop at the library with my wife. I picked up a few books that had some good info on William Goebel. The previous article was 99% copyvio, so I cleaned it up with citations. I think it might be about ready for a good article nom now. New Article - James William "Honest Dick" Tate

In some of my recent reading, I have run across an interesting character known as "Honest Dick" Tate, a Kentucky treasury secretary who took off with $250,000 from the state's treasury in March 1888. I figure he's worth at least a stub on Wikipedia, but I don't know how to title the article. "Honest Dick" Tate doesn't seem like the appropriate title, but apparently James W. Tate is a famous poet, and there is another James Tate that is a politician, so James Tate (politician) isn't specific enough either. Suggestions? Acdixon 16:48, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

I would suggest that if he was known as "Honest Dick" Tate, then titling it as "Honest Dick" Tate would be appropriate enough. Failing that, naming it James "Honest Dick" Tate might not be a bad idea either.Soldan 16:30, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

Proposed revamp of List of counties in Kentucky

I was thinking about the List of counties in Kentucky, and I'd like to change it to look more like this. I think the fields in the proposed list are more interesting, and perhaps more useful, as some of the data on the existing list is only current as of the 2000 census. I'm not sure how many red links we might end up with, but hopefully, not enough to prevent a featured list nomination. Please give me your feedback. Acdixon 14:49, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

I would prefer that the Census numbers stay because it helps to understand relative populations. Further, there might be newer adjusted Census numbers (maybe from 2005?) available that could be added to the table.

Not sure. I haven't looked at what other states have done. So, are you proposing moving the existing list to something like List of census data about Kentucky counties and putting my proposed list at List of counties in Kentucky, or making them part of the same article, or what? We could just add a column for "2000 population" to my proposed list to get relative populations. Request re:project template

Hi, I was wondering if you could modify your project template so that it has a parameter to appear in a smaller version on talk pages i.e. {{WikiProject Kentucky|importance=top|class=B|small=yes}}. Otherwise if attempts are made to make all tags on a talk page small versions, your template can create quite a mess- see this version of the Abraham Lincoln talk page for an example of what I mean. I was pointing out that most projects have set up their tag so they can have a small version. I simply offered one example. The problem of talkpages getting over-cluttered with tags is a growing one. Invitation template for WPKY

Might it be a good idea to create an "invitation template" for our WikiProject? Whenever I see an editor make constructive edits to a Kentucky-related article, I check their contribution history. If it includes a significant number of Kentucky-related edits, I try to leave an invitation to the project on their talk page. My standard blurb goes something like this:

Your recent edits seem to indicate that you have some local knowledge of Kentucky. If so, perhaps you would like to join WikiProject Kentucky, a project for the creation, expansion, and improvement of articles related to the state of Kentucky. Check out our project page, and if you like what you see, join us by adding your name to our membership list. Hope to see you at WikiProject Kentucky!

Abraham Lincoln

Checking the archives, I note that there was a discussion as to the size of the WikiProject Kentucky's tag being too large? Is this the reason it is not currently tagged as a WikiProject Kentucky article? SonPraises 11:16, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

Looks like all the WikiProject tags for that article have been moved to a hidden block that can be shown by clicking the "Show" link. Thanks for keeping a watch on that, though. I fixed the tag a while back to support the 'small' parameter. But the reason it's not visible (at first) is because of what Acdixon said. Appalachian Mountains, Appalachian English

My reading of the scope of WikiProject Kentucky tends to make me think that the articles Appalachian Mountains and Appalachian English fall well within those parameters, so I've tagged them. The Appalachian Mts. article, for example has been tagged for several state projects.

Of course if the tagging is contrary to consensus view, they should be removed, but my strong sense is that for good or ill the larger view outside the state is that a Kentuckian is an Appalachian which was reconfirmed watching Primal Fear for a second time last night. I agree that those articles can be reasonably tagged for the project. In fact, I consider it one of the missions of the project to change the negative perceptions of Kentucky that you mention. Even though Appalachia does have some negatives, it also has unique cultural elements that should be celebrated (it's music, etc.) Acdixon 13:42, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

Introduction (and a question)

Hello! I am new to projects on Wikipedia, and I believe that this would be a great place to start learning. Any help or information would be appreciated; I am eager to learn how I could be of service to this article and community.

In addition, I noticed that the city of Louisville is referenced as the largest city in Kentucky as of the 2005 population census. With the integration of the city of Lexington and the surrounding Fayette county, is this still the case? I was under the impression from several sources that Lexington (now the entirety of Fayette county) has exceeded the population of Louisville within recent years, due to Louisville not integrating with its own county. If I am incorrect I apologize for the error (I have not edited any pages, of course). Thank you for your time, and I look forward to meeting everyone. vendetta 19:19, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Possibly useful map

I made a locator map for Kentucky. Similar ones are in use in infoboxes in state park articles (for example Itasca State Park) or city articles (for example Elmwood, Louisiana). I hope this is useful, Ruhrfisch 23:11, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Consolidating Resources

A good way to possibly increase the number of featured articles relating to Kentucky would be to restructure child projects (Louisville and Bluegrass Region) as work groups (or task forces or departments) rather than as separate projects. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history task forces for an example--that project creates a LOT of featured articles because it brings a lot of editors together. Having three different Kentucky projects scatters valuable human resources. The child projects will remain as important as ever, but people interested in Kentucky topics will have a central area from which to coordinate article improvement. Other work groups could then be developed -- Frontier Kentucky would be an interest of mine, for example.

I'm definitely for bringing these projects back in, especially Bluegrass Region and KYOVA region. I'm guessing Bluegrass region isn't very active, as they haven't noticed IP vandalism to their main page for a month today. (Just noticed and reverted it.) I should note that the Military History WikiProject absorbed several other projects -- and that's part of the reason why it's so successful. There's now a central area for announcements and discussion of general interest, and specialized task forces for specific interests. Agreed with Bedford. WPLouisville is a metro area project. Strong ties with WPKentucky are very much encouraged, and I believe our projects have coordinated well over the past year. The main thing dragging down the development of articles, IMHO, is not enough active members. I myself am on break due to wikiburnout. Another factor is that WPLou took a long time assessing and assigning importance to articles (we just finished, thanks to Bedford!), and WPKentucky still has about 900 articles to assign importance to. With all the information gathered from this effort, it should be much easier as a coordinated team which articles we should pour most of our time into to move toward Featured and GA. Regardless of how this discussion turns out, feel free to create the Frontier Kentucky workgroup. (You might look at Wilderness Road from our "Close to Good" list as a start. I think it's just a few inline citations from GA.) It think having some specialized workgroups might help balance the load a little better. I've been a one man Kentucky Governors workgroup for the last few weeks anyway. I know there has been in times past a lot of interest in Kentucky in the Civil War. Another point I would like to make is that while I'm not taking a position on whether Bluegrass region or KYOVA region should be made into taskforces, it would be very worthwhile for these projects to go through the assessment process. Confederate government article

I just finished a fairly extensive article on the Confederate government of Kentucky. New parameter to project template

Use of infobox

Louis Cox, man or myth?

Was Louis Cox the Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky, as List of Governors of Kentucky claims? Or did he never occupy that office as Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky claims?

I was the one who added this name, based on information shown here but I haven't found any other references to this person holding the office. He is conspicuously absent from the list appearing in Kentucky Governors by Robert A. Powell (1976). This is also the case with a few other lieutenant governors in List of Governors of Kentucky. Far be it from me to take issue with the Kentucky Department of Libraries and Archives, but I can't find a secondary source that mentions Cox (and a few others.)
I had hoped to clarify the situation when I got around to expanding the articles for the related governors, but if someone could provide some clarification before then, I'd really appreciate it, since I'd like to get the list of governors in featured list condition at some point in the near future. I also agree. We need to make sure that Kentucky is well-represented in the biggest encyclopedia in world history, especially because of the cross-links between Kentucky and a lot of other subjects here. Films

In order to facilitate tagging films set or shot in Kentucky, I created two categories: Category:Films shot in Kentucky and Category:Films set in Kentucky. Using my limited knowledge, I included Goldfinger, Coal Miner's Daughter, Rainman, Fire Down Below, Next of Kin (1989 film), Seabiscuit, and Elizabethtown (film).

I'm pretty sure some of the scenes for Milk Money were shot in Northern Kentucky, but haven't been able to document it.

If anyone knows of any more movies about or shot in Kentucky, feel free to add either or both of those category tags to the article.

Courthouse image project

I am trying to compile free images of all 120 Kentucky county courthouses, which as far as I know don't exist yet, at least not in one place. I have about... 1/6 so far, at User:W.marsh/KY Courthouse Project. Phoenix Hotel

Featured article collaboration

User:WildManKY has recently split the article Kentucky Wildcats men's basketball team out of Kentucky Wildcats. He and I have been discussing taking the former to good or featured status. We know this could turn into a beast, but it's a subject near and dear to many Kentuckians, so it could be the best chance for collaboration we've had in this project for a while. The cardinal rule for this collaboration will be cite everything with reliable sources. This is an article that could easily descend into a fansite. What say you, WikiProject Kentuckians? Citations and ISBNs

The article Lazarus W. Powell and a few dozen other pages[1] cite Kentucky Governors (1976) by using the "cite book" template and the parameter "isbn=B0006CPOVM". That is not an ISBN, but an ASIN from Amazon, and the resulting citation doesn't have any useful link. I couldn't find any ISBN, but the ASIN can be linked, as can an OCLC/Worldcat catalog record ID. The correct way to specify this in the cite book template would be "id={{ASIN|B0006CPOVM}}, {{OCLC|2690774}}" (which would become displayed as ASIN B0006CPOVM, OCLC 2690774). I could go through them and correct this, but perhaps something else needs to be checked as well? Is this a good book and edition to cite? How do you typically handle errors of this kind in this WikiProject? Do you maintain a list of standard literature, and would this book be on that list? I like the concept, particularly for history-related WikiProjects such as this one where there are a limited number of reference works. I don't entirely understand the Ref:Jane's template but no doubt a bit more study will do it for me. Once I understand it I'll do a similar one for the common works here and see if there is any consensus for its use. Euryalus 22:17, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

The idea is that you compile a list of standard works, and specify a label for each, e.g. "KenGov76" for the one we had above. Then you create a template, perhaps called "Ref Kentucky", where you put this code: 

{{#switch {{{1}}}
  | KenGov76 = {{cite book | ... }}
  | BlaBla99 = {{cite book | ... }}
 }}

After this, all you need to do is to use {{Ref Kentucky | KenGov76 }} instead of copying the entire citation around. If you often refer to pages or chapters in your books, you can use extra parameters to your template. There's nothing magic about this. The point is that after this, it becomes so much easier to cite works that belong in the WikiProject's official standard reference library (= the template). Sorry to chime in late, especially since this issue is my fault, but I was on vacation. I can't find an ISBN number for this book on its copyright page, or anywhere else for that matter. I feel that it is reliable, however, and I believe it is mentioned by Harrison in the foreword to his book. I also believe there is an updated edition of the book, but I don't have access to it (rural libraries being what they are.)

As for the larger issue of a common set of reference works, I like it. (That said, I've been looking at it for a total of less than five minutes.) I know it would help me, since I'm citing the same five works in every governor article I improve. Once I dig out from under the post-vacation pile, perhaps I can give this some more attention. Hope to get some help from other project members. Any takers?

"Murder"  ?

Hsi article referrs to native American "murdering" people coming along the trail.

There are circumstances where this would be the appropriate word. No doubt some of these killings could be described as murder. For example, if the native Amjericans were part of one of the tribes that did make a sale of the land, then perhaps a killing they did could be described as murder.

Perhaps not, though. Could what is describe d as a sale really ahve been land fraud? Seems likely. Most of the deaths inflicted on the invaders weren't murder.

In any case, "murdered" is a biased word and "killing" is not.

The incompleted battleship USS Kentucky (BB-66) just cleared Featured Article Candidates with unanomous support; as the article discusses a battleship named for the state of Kentucky I have come to ask if anyone from the project would tag the article as being within this projects scope and fill out any additional fields as needed.
