Initial discussion[edit]

Moved on 06:31, 3 October 2008 (UTC) from this section of the WikiProject talk page (permalink)

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! October 20. Uh. Help? Anyone have time to review that list. It looks fascinating! Carcharoth (talk) 19:26, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmmm... 95 out of 825 articles selected. That's significantly higher than the average from other projects. It is also notable that only 12 of these pages have an 'importance score' over the 1250 thresh-hold for inclusion. Most of them thus seem to get in based on other criteria. For instance, Mithril is listed as only a B class mid-importance article... but has over 10,000 page views per month. IMO these lists, including similar results on other wikiprojects, make a strong case against efforts to cut back information on fictional topics. Things which people are most interested in reading are, perforce, notable.
That being said, this is alot of work to go through in little time. We have about 30 days. Offhand I don't see any articles which 'absolutely must' be in there missing from the list. Unless someone else thinks that there is something important missing we might try to aim for getting these 95 articles up to high standards. First order of business should probably be to read all 95 articles and correct any blatant errors/vandalism. If we complete that then we might try to get all of them up to at least 'B' class (there are currently 23 Start and 1 C class). I'd suggest that we work in order by the assigned importance: 'Top' then 'High' and then 'Mid'. That way, if we run out of time, we might be able to just drop some of the 'mid importance' articles which are still 'Start class'. --CBD 20:56, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I noticed the interesting "hits" stats as well. Alliterative verse doesn't have much about Tolkien in it (I added what is there), and could be dropped as overall it's not really Tolkien stuff. Hopefully it will make it in as part of another project (if that's how it works). Another starting point is the ones tagged for clean-up. I followed the link above, and thankfully only five are tagged for clean-up or other problems! (A lot of the stub and start articles are tagged). The five are:
Didn't you write that last one, Conrad? :-) The LotR one should be easy to fix (but someone still needs to do it). Well, they all need doing. As for articles possibly missing? Looking at Category:Tolkien articles by importance might help. We have 24 Top-importance Tolkien articles and 23 are in that list. The missing one is Talk:On Fairy-Stories - is it worth trying to improve that further - it looks quite good at the moment. It might be worth checking which of the 142 High-importance Tolkien articles could be added in if we wanted to do so. I see that Figwit is now a good article... Of the ones there, I would drop Minor places in Middle-earth, Minor places in Beleriand, Rangers of the North, and List of Kings of Rohan. They are too listy and index/appendix-like. It seems that I'm going to have a bit of a quieter period at work for the next month, so you can count me in on this. However, if I'll have to review of the order of 100 articles, then it'll be quite a while before I get to do any editing, so it might be a good idea to simply start out with a smaller number, or to assign smaller areas to different contributors. Along with the one 'Top importance' article noted, there are also two articles with A or better quality rankings which didn't make the cut: The Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game is a GA and Adaptations of The Lord of the Rings is 'A class'. However, I don't think any of these three are critical for inclusion. On 'High importance' articles... anything below 'B class' would probably be difficult to get up to quality quickly. The current 'B-High' articles which didn't make the cut are: The Hobbit (1977 film), Languages of Arda, Works inspired by J. R. R. Tolkien, Nírnaeth Arnoediad, J. R. R. Tolkien's influences, History of Arda, Middle-earth peoples, and List of poems by J. R. R. Tolkien. Of those, I might want to see the Languages, History, and Peoples included... but none of them are close to being in sufficiently good shape.
I had thought about suggesting that we exclude some of the list articles as they seem to be getting in based on the number of wikilinks... which is, of course, inflated precisely because they are lists. However, most of them seem to be at least somewhat polished. The four you (Carcharoth) list could probably go though.
Let's do the five cleanup items listed above (and no, I contributed to but did not create Timeline of Arda) and then review and update the 23 'Top' articles (of which 12 are 'Start' class). There are also 6 'High' and 6 'Mid' importance articles in the list below 'B class' currently. So a total of about 29 articles which we should likely try to improve. --CBD 13:12, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I added a few sources to the Inspiration section at Rohan, but there are still some claims that could need backup, e.g. the pun on the Rohan family of England. De728631 (talk) 14:42, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I made various updates to Elf (Middle-earth) and One Ring. The latter still contains one challenged claim, added by an anon in May, of a possible connection between the One Ring and a Nodens curse tablet - which I can find no reference for. Tolkien did do an etymological analysis of the name Nodens in conjunction with Wheeler's dig, but I'm not aware of any evidence or speculation about him having seen the tablet in question outside this article. I'm planning to add references for various things in The_Lord_of_the_Rings next and then to look at the timeline. --CBD 23:00, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Lets include Dol Guldur Lord of Moria Talk Contribs 12:35, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
How far are we on this? There are no specific versions listed in the [[1]], but how many of the current editions have been reviewed?
I'm working on the Ainulindalë, but my work is on my laptop, and the transformer for that died late Friday (that is, I hope it's the transformer and not the power input) losing me the two days of work I had planned for the weekend, so I suspect that it will be difficult for me to be ready tomorrow (with a little luck, I can be done on Tuesday the 21st, but that could be too late). Table created for automated selection[edit]

Table created for automated selection: see Wikipedia:WikiProject Middle-earth/Wikipedia 0.7 selection. I made the table sortable. Please feel free to improve the table layout and add colours and other columns as needed. There should probably be at least a column for people to indicate they have read the article and approved a particular version, together with a link to that version. Carcharoth (talk) 06:36, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've added a couple of columns to hopefully help keeping track of things. The intention is that we add our name and some sort of indication of the status of a page in these columns. I could, of course, have put date and version link in separate columns, but I don't think there's a need for that. Troelsfo (talk) 10:55, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
