Hi there

You might want to get a hold of Mike McGregor (Can), who left a message on my talk page talking about his interest in starting this task force himself. He would probably be willing to join, though he has been seemingly ignoring me requests for help with the Mozambican War of Independence article.--SGGH 18:33, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

OK, will contact him. You can join yourself. Wandalstouring 16:12, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
Hey there, My Wikiing really dropped of around that time, due to non-wiki distrctions... Sorry about not responding, it wasn't ment as a snub or anything; ). I'm still not editing as much as I'd like, but I'm keeping a eye on this and other projects for when I can jump back in. Mike McGregor (Can) 17:40, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
Incidentaly, Mozambican War of Independence is still up for collaboration of the fortnight, if you would like to contribute some votes :) --SGGH 14:56, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

How to organize this task force

While we are still waiting for some members to sign up (Llyrwich), I suggest to organize the material we have to deal with for getting an overview of what exists and what not, etc. This way it should be easier to combine our articles into a bigger picture. Has anyone an idea? Mine would be to organize in some geographical areas which tended to share cultural development and political fate.

Nile to the Horn of Africa

Maghreb

Sahara/Sahel

West-African coast, Niger river and Senegal river

Congo river and neighbouring coastal area

Cape of Good Hope to Zambezi river

East Africa (Zanzibar)

These names can be refined, it should be simply a suggestion of areas.

Wandalstouring 20:54, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

I tend to mentally divide conflicts into pre-colonial, colonial, anti-colonial, Cold War, and post-Cold War, though that has difficulties of its own. In any case, I think "Sahara" should be replaced by Sahel, as the Sahara tends to be a division between regions rather than a region. One could certainly make a case for the Arab coast from the Horn to Zanzibar being a region by itself. - BanyanTree 21:12, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
Perhaps Sahel/Sahara. the Sahara has been gradually drying out (due to climatic changes) during the Antiquity, while at the beginning of this period you could even keep cattle there. See more info in the Garamantes article. Wandalstouring 21:21, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
You are quite right. I had completely forgot about that, but I do suffer from horrible recent-itis. - BanyanTree 21:25, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
I think the dividing into regions are good. But if people want it chronologicly I think we should do with BanyanTree;s suggestion. Kyriakos 21:48, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
Doing it by regions is a viable scheme. I'm happy to organize myself around Wandalstouring's outline above. - BanyanTree 03:16, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
I like both schemes. However, an for the sake of simplicity, region-wise categorizing is more easier to handle. -- Szvest 13:42, 7 November 2006 (UTC) Wiki me up ®

Renaming "Wars involving Africa"

Here is a discussion about renaming the category "Wars involving Africa".Wandalstouring 10:01, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

Mozambican War of Independence

The Mozambican War of Independence still hasn't had any further support from members of this task force regarding its collaboration fo the week bid. Again I respectfully ask that this task force add its support for this article to become the next collaboration, which you can do by adding your name here. Please help me not to leave such a big topic half finished! Many thanks in advance, SGGH 19:28, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Believe me when I say that I've already looked through my bookshelf for relevant information, and come up empty. The nearest I can get is a chapter on the immediately following civil war. While I empathize and have been in the same situation myself, it would be counterproductive for me to support a nomination that I know that I cannot follow up on. I've also made a note of it at WP:AFR, but apparently these aren't called "systemically biased against"-articles for nothing. - BanyanTree 20:03, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
I can't write if I lack knowledge. This is wikipedia. You have to be patient for things to develop. If you need something asap the best approach is to ask directly an editor you know and who knows about the topic.Wandalstouring 23:02, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
Apologies, I was thinking of getting nominations merely so that it will become the collaboration and some user somehwere who does know would notice and therefore get involved, I wasn't thinking that support was based so much on how much the supporting user him/herself could contribute. A misinterpretation on my part, and yes your right BanyanTree it is frustrating, lol. Thanks for your responses SGGH 21:20, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

Oh, PS: a little random I know, but there is a book on the war that would be ideal, sitting in the New York Public Library though while I was there on holiday I didn't know enough of the system to get a look at it myself. So if anyone lives in New York..., :D SGGH 21:20, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

Please give me author, title and the exact location.Wandalstouring 21:53, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
Are you refering to From the Barrel of a Gun: The United States and the War Against Zimbabwe, 1965-1980 by Gerald Horne? -- Szvest - Wiki me up ® 12:49, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

this is the one. Revolution and Counter-revolution: Mozambique's War of Independence, 1964-74. Though I'm afraid I can't remember where abouts it was, one of the large rooms at the top, I know that's vauge but I was only there twice during my holiday. SGGH 10:37, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

You can't get it via interlibrary loan? - BanyanTree 15:22, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
The other title i refered to above can be fully viewed here. -- Szvest - Wiki me up ® 15:37, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
@ FayssalF, that book contains information about the Mozambican Warof Independence? It's just the title suggests otherwise.... :S. @ BanyanTree, a loan across the Atlantic? Can that be done? SGGH 13:03, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
My NY resident is on wikibreak. If you sit across the Atlantic, try one of your local libraries that has access to your national library network (for example a university library, the national library, etc.) Wandalstouring 14:28, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
Unfortunatly am out in the sticks, very much doubt the local library has a copy, but I will have a look around. Though other users will likly have better luck. SGGH 15:31, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
Where is the sticks? China? Wandalstouring 16:50, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Chadian-Sudanese conflict/Third Chadian Civil War

Hi all guys I wanted to hear your opinion on the name of the article formerly called Chadian-Sudanese conflict, and recently renamed by FEARgod Third Chadian Civil War. While I fully agree with the logic behind the move (i.e. this is first of all an internal conflict, and no large scale clash between Chadian and Sudanese regulars has taken place) I'm a bit bewildered by the new name. While the first Chadian Civil War is the endless conflict started in 1965 and ended in 1993, and civil war is a legitimate expression for the present conflict, I doubt we can speak of a distinct second and third civil war, especially since the new surge of violence in chance has started at least in 1998, with the foundation of the MDJT. Opinions?--Aldux 22:44, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

Assessment - help needed

I've almost finished tagging African-task-force=yes to related articles. I just need some help assessing the articles now. Thanks in advance. -- FayssalF - Wiki me up ® 15:00, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Zimbabwe Civil War

This task shows up on the to-do list as a requested article. But there are already 3 articles that cover these events: Second Matabele War ; Rhodesian Bush War ; Chimurenga. Ctatkinson 10:47, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

Well, it should presumably be either an overview article of all three, or a disambiguation page, then. :-) Kirill Lokshin 11:36, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
The Chimurenga article is the really an overview of this topic. Perhaps a redirect page is needed? Ctatkinson 12:06, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Battle of Sidi Bou Zid

Could you please guys verify the facts at Battle of Sidi Bou Zid? I doubt some facts are not 100% correct (i.e. weapons used, figures, etc...) I know that most of the article is referenced but most references use different names for the same weapons. Thanks in advance. -- FayssalF - Wiki me up ® 15:24, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

Military history of Africa Portal has just been created. -- FayssalF - Wiki me up ® 19:45, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

Nice! Kirill Lokshin 21:31, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

Scope

In tagging and assessing articles, I have come across the question of overlapping scope between this task force and that of the Middle East, which by various conceptions includes North Africa, from Morocco to Egypt, as well as its Asian regions. Ultimately, I don't think it's a bad thing to overlap, and double-tag articles, but I wanted to double-check with people. Thanks. LordAmeth 21:28, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

Where there is a natural overlap, I think double-tagging adds value. Ctatkinson 22:23, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

Agree w/ both. This happens w/ regular categories as well. -- FayssalF - Wiki me up® 11:37, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

Set nomination for Version 0.7

We have a list of African wars proposed for inclusion in our next offline release, version 0.7. I've reviewed all the articles and left my comments, but I'm not an expert - you are! Please could you give us your expert opinions on what should be included. Generally we try to avoid including Start-class, though if it's close to B and important we may include it. You are the people who should know if we're excluding anything critical, or including trivia.

Note that MILHIST has higher standards for B than most projects; we generally don't absolutely require refs for B, in that an A-Class article with no refs would be called B.

Please leave your comments here! Thanks, Walkerma 02:37, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for that. Much appreciated. Well, i've just left some comments and i'll be adding more. I'll contact the project members for help. We can devide tasks between ourselves in order to enhance the articles and make it fast. -- FayssalF - Wiki me up® 14:01, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

Guinea-Bissau War of Independence

I created Guinea-Bissau War of Independence, however information is still spread across several articles. Information needs to be merged into it from articles usch as African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde, Amílcar Cabral and History of Guinea-Bissau. --Jonte-- 09:44, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

DYK Announcement

The British South Africa Company Medal is featured on today's Main Page's Did you know? section. -- Ctatkinson 11:13, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

Cool. One question Atkinson. What is the reason behind CAPS in the Clasps section? -- FayssalF - Wiki me up® 12:33, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
The clasps were issued with inscriptions in all CAPS, but I agree it is awkward. I'll revise the section and make it easier to read. -- Ctatkinson 02:26, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

GA Announcement

Frederick Russell Burnham obtained GA status today. Hurray!!! The GA reviewer commented that it is already a very good article and, for FA, he suggests suggest more on Burnham's non-military work. Many thanks for everyone's contributions to-date. It sounds like we can bring it to FA with only a bit more work. Further input and peer review here would be much appreciated. Thanks! -- Ctatkinson 18:14, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

Abyssinian-Adal War

This is an open request for help on the Abyssinian-Adal War. There's plenty of info here on wiki about Ahmad Gran and Ethiopia. My profile page also has a list of battles. Sadly i don't have any books on the subject and don't feel that qualified to do the article all by my lonesome. Your help would be appreciated. Thanx in advance and every1 keep up the good work!  :)Scott Free 12:56, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

image identification

What is this uniform?

Hello, I recently uploaded an image of two Ugandan soldiers, circa 1936 and have been wondering what force they were in. The hat and leggings seem identical to the King's African Rifles, Uganda battalion (see some images) but the shirt and emblem appear to be wrong. Can anyone shed some light on the matter? - BanyanTree 21:30, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

Mali Empire!

I just put up an article on the Military history of the Mali Empire. I also did some re-editing of the Sofa (warrior) article. Will y'all please take a look at it. Much appreciated! Scott Free (talk) 05:59, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

Assessed. Please keep in mind that information on wikipedia must be verifiable and for this reason all sections need sources provided with correct citations. See the source of this example when you edit the discussion.

Ref list good

hey thanks for checking out the page so quickly. i didn't know u were going to grade it right away, but that's cool and I totally agree with ur assessment. I just finished putting in the citations (whoo!). Lots of work. I know they page needs to flow better, and I have left out some of the obvious stuff, but i will go back in later and touch that up to. The page now gives a much better impression of the Mali Empire's military. Holla back4shizzal 02:17, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

Mali Empire

Don't know what that visibility test thing is about, but it's annoying as hell. Anyway, I put the inline citations in. I know how to put them in, I just didn't have time yesterday. I didn't realize u were going to assess it right away. I am glad you took a look at it tho. Check it out now, and I think you will have a much better opinion of it. The page doesn't quite flow the way I want it to, and I really need some pics. Other than that, I think its gonna be a bager!4shizzal 02:17, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for African military history

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! For the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team, SelectionBot 22:47, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles tagged by their banner enter a workflow such as Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, and Peer review (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found at here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features.

The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts".

GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. With ~1,300 articles left to review, we would appreciate any editors that could contribute in helping to uphold the quality of GAs. If you have any questions about the process, reviewing, or need help with a particular article, please contact me or OhanaUnited and we'll be happy to help. --Happy editing! Lord's Resistance Army insurgency at FAR

I have nominated Lord's Resistance Army insurgency for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets featured article criteria. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Remove" the article's featured status. The instructions for the review process are here.Cirt (talk) 00:48, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Changes to popular pages lists

There are a few important changes to the popular pages system. A quick summary:

  • The "importance" ranking (for projects that use it) will be included in the lists along with assessment.
  • The default list size has been lowered to 500 entries (from 1000)
  • I've set up a project on the Toolserver for the popular pages - tools:~alexz/pop/.
    • This includes a page to view the results for projects, including the in-progress results from the current month. Currently this can only show the results from a single project in one month. Features to see multiple projects or multiple months may be added later.
    • This includes a new interface for making requests to add a new project to the list.
    • There is also a form to request a change to the configuration for a project. Currently the configurable options are the size of the on-wiki list and the project subpage used for the list.
  • The on-wiki list should be generated and posted in a more timely and consistent manner than before.
  • The data is now retained indefinitely.
  • The script used to generate the pages has changed. The output should be the same. Please report any apparent inconsistencies (see below).
  • Bugs and feature requests should be reported using the Toolserver's bug tracker for "alexz's tools" - [1]
