Task force icon

For the time being, I've used as an icon for this task force in {{WPMILHIST}}. Obviously, it's not the best image (not even the best map, probably), so any suggestion of better (but hopefully uncontroversial) ones would be welcome! Kirill Lokshin 03:16, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

How to organize the task force

I have some suggestions on how to organize this task force. I think we should organize this task force in chronological or regional section. For chronological sections I have been thinking that we should divide into three sections:

Byzantine:500 AD to 1453 AD Ottoman:1453 AD to 1913 AD Post Balkan War:1913 AD to present

Or for regional divisions

Greece

Eastern Balkans includes Bulgaria, FYROM and Romania and the Balkan area of Turkey

Western Balkans: Serbia, Montenegro, Slovenia, Croatia, Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina

Any comments? Kyriakos 08:43, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Considering the fact that regional couldn't really be applied (many/most of the wars/campaigns/scenarios played out on a broader scale), I suggest sticking to the chronological. --PaxEquilibrium 11:13, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Chronological: It makes more sense if we limit it to World War I (1918), rather than the Balkan war - after it there were no significant changes... --PaxEquilibrium 11:40, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Kyriakos, now that you made that suggestions, I actually have a question. Is this task force supposed to cover all military events that occurred in the Balkan Peninsula or is it just supposed to cover military events where Balkan peoples (Slavs, Greeks, Albanians) were the main protagonists? Do we even know? We should probably decide this first. The answer to that question could change around the dates significantly.UberCryxic 15:58, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Both. (I thought this particular horse had been beaten to death; c.f. "This task force includes the military histories of all Balkan groups and states, as well as military activity in the Balkans by non-Balkan powers" ;-) Kirill Lokshin 16:06, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Dear god who the frick decided that? We have a lot on our hands then.UberCryxic 16:09, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

It's pretty much the standard formulation for task forces dealing with areas that have interesting histories (e.g. Africa, Italy, etc.). And yes, that does mean this task force covers a lot of material—but that's not necessarily a bad thing, is it? :-) Kirill Lokshin 16:12, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
Gives us a wider net to catch in participants liek myself that has little knowledge on the blakans groups but a large knowledge on exterior power involved inteh Balkans like the Byzantine and the Ottomans, not to mention Frankish/French intentions.--Dryzen 19:16, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Hmm How does the organisation work exactly? What I mean by this is how does saying we organise a certain way effect the editing of articles and problem solving relating to the articles that fall under this Task Force's perview?--Dryzen 19:16, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

The one bad thing I see is that there will be a lot of overlap. Although, I do agree that we need a general and comprehensive standard for task forces. It would suck if for some task forces we only studied peoples but for others we did peoples and what happened in the territory in question. The latter seems better, all things considered. I was complaining about the fact that, for this particular task force, that will mean a shitload of material, pardon the expression. If we're being true to ourselves, Balkan military history would go back thousands of years before Jesus. That will be difficult to cover, even for Jesus.UberCryxic 19:16, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

That's pretty much the way the "national" task forces have been run; most of them have it a bit easier, though, because the nation in question has been an independent entity—or at least a politically distinct one—for a longer/more continuous block time than the Balkan states have. (There are some task forces where this question becomes a more problematic one, but those are the exception rather than the rule.)
(Plus, Balkan military history before c. 500 isn't covered here anyways; that's been left to the Classical warfare task force [as has the same period in the Italian task force].) Kirill Lokshin 19:44, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Oh that's right. I missed that last part. Good to know; now I feel better.UberCryxic 19:49, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Never been big on the "National" TFs as they do bring this problem into the lime light, but until now fears have not been materialized and things are going good. I'm still perplexed as to the proposed sub-organisation tough...--Dryzen
I think the intent of the indicated structure was pretty informal, just an idea of how the topic are might "naturally" split into periods to cover. Broadly speaking, I think a pre-Ottoman/Ottoman/post-Ottoman view is pretty standard, as there are major cultural, political, and military changes that occur with the rise and fall of the Ottoman Empire in the Balkans. Kirill Lokshin 21:56, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
I'm still unsure what to do with it, but as to a logical sub-division, basing ourselves on the Ottoman Hegemony does seem appropriate.--Dryzen 18:31, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

Ho, ho... this talk page is extending far too much. Let's stick to the main issue. Categorization. How to do it? --PaxEquilibrium 22:08, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Wesley Clark

Hi guys! I realize it's very recent Balkan history, but I thought some of you might want to stop by the Wesley Clark article I've rewritten (along with major editing help from others) which is currently undergoing an FAC and could use your vote! Morea expedition GA Sweeps Review: On Hold

As part of the WikiProject Good Articles, we're doing sweeps to go over all of the current GAs and see if they still meet the GA criteria. I'm specifically going over all of the "Conflicts, battles and military exercises" articles and just reviewed Morea expedition. I believe the article currently meets the majority of the criteria and should remain listed as a Good article. In reviewing the article, I have found there are some issues considering sourcing that should be addressed, and I'll leave the article on hold for seven days for them to be fixed. I am leaving this message at this project page, along with the other relevant task forces/WikiProjects to the article, since the article falls under this topic and figured you might be interested in helping to improve the article further. The article needs just a few more inline citations and if added, I'll pass the article. If you have any questions, let me know on my talk page, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. --Nehrams2020 01:34, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

Could editors please take a look at this article and comment on its talk page? It is mostly the work of one editor and I have concerns about neutrality. It is also looking increasingly unencyclopedic and probably contains excessive detail (such as on the 1903 coup). Your opinion may differ, of course. --ROGER DAVIES talk 11:11, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Balkan military history

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! For the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team, SelectionBot 22:31, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jadran (ship)

The discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jadran (ship) may be of interest to participants here. Jadran (ship) is a training ship of the navy of Montenegro, and was originally built for the navy of Yugoslavia. -- Eastmain (talk) 15:34, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

Thanks. — Headbomb {ταλκκοντριβς – WP Physics} 08:51, 15 March, 2009 (UTC)

You are invited to add military topics to the above article, which right now focuses only on political events. Sincerely, GeorgeLouis (talk) 17:58, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Changes to popular pages lists

There are a few important changes to the popular pages system. A quick summary:

  • The "importance" ranking (for projects that use it) will be included in the lists along with assessment.
  • The default list size has been lowered to 500 entries (from 1000)
  • I've set up a project on the Toolserver for the popular pages - tools:~alexz/pop/.
    • This includes a page to view the results for projects, including the in-progress results from the current month. Currently this can only show the results from a single project in one month. Features to see multiple projects or multiple months may be added later.
    • This includes a new interface for making requests to add a new project to the list.
    • There is also a form to request a change to the configuration for a project. Currently the configurable options are the size of the on-wiki list and the project subpage used for the list.
  • The on-wiki list should be generated and posted in a more timely and consistent manner than before.
  • The data is now retained indefinitely.
  • The script used to generate the pages has changed. The output should be the same. Please report any apparent inconsistencies (see below).
  • Bugs and feature requests should be reported using the Toolserver's bug tracker for "alexz's tools" - [1]

Task force reorganisation

Following the project's recent discussions, I've now merged the Romanian military history task force into this, the Balkan military history task force. Redirects have been left in place where possible, but members may need to update their watchlist accordingly. There is also a new userbox available which makes use of a generic Balkans map-type image (linked from the templates section of the project page); suggestions for a more suitable image are very welcome! All the best, EyeSerenetalk 12:13, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

WP 1.0 bot announcement

This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 02:56, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Pageview stats

After a recent request, I added WikiProject Military history/Romanian military history task force to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Romanian military history task force/Popular pages.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. You can view more results, request a new project be added to the list, or request a configuration change for this project using the toolserver tool. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know. Thanks! Mr.Z-man 02:47, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

You do realize that the Romanian TF has been merged into the Balkan TF. That won't effect the old code, but it will for the new code.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 05:23, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

Battles/Wars involving...

Battles/Wars involving Montenegro category should be added. There are battles Montenegro fought that are unrightfully credited to Serbia(although Serbia didn't have anything to do with them), such as battle at Bar and battle at Vuciji Do. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.155.40.73 (talk) 00:45, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

Milhist outreach at Wikimania 2010

This year's Wikimania takes place in Gdansk, Poland, over the weekend of 9-11 July (details). Would you be interested in attending and helping prepare a Milhist presentation, explaining how our project works for the benefit of other editors from other wikis? It is also a great opportunity to meet up with other Wikipedians and Milhisters, and explore the city itself a little. This will be of particular interest to Milhist members living within easy travelling distance of Poland, though it is bound to attract interest from others living further away. This is at early discussion stages at the moment but we only need five or six people to make it happen!

If you might be able to help, or attend, please sign up HERE.
