Peer Review of Omar Khadr

Image for CWAC page

I'm new to the "otherside" of wikipedia so excuse me if I'm not doing this right.

I've added a image of the cap badge of the Canadian Women's Army Corps to Wikimedia Commons and thought that it might be of some use on the Wikipedia entry.

The image can be found here: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:CWAC_Cap_Badge_and_Fastener.JPG

Moro Resources

Would anyone have any recommendations for good references & sources for information concerning The Moro River Campaign? I'm finding that I'm having to lean more and more on Zuehlke's 1999 account of the whole battle (at least for the sections from December 6 — 9). I've got access to resources by Bercuson, Zuehlke, & Berton. Anyone else got any they could recommend for me?

Keep in mind that I'm discovering this to be the case for the Moro crossings in early December. I have more resources on the Gully & Ortona than on the initial operations, so I'm hoping this problem will dissipate somewhat towards the later sections of the article (fingers crossed). Any help is appreciated. Cheers! Cam (Chat) 05:42, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Royal Canadian Air Cadets GA Sweeps Review: On Hold

As part of the WikiProject Good Articles, we're doing sweeps to go over all of the current GAs and see if they still meet the GA criteria and I'm specifically going over all of the "Culture and Society" articles. I have reviewed Royal Canadian Air Cadets and believe the article currently meets the majority of the criteria and should remain listed as a Good article. I have left this message at this WikiProject's talk page so that any interested members can assist in helping the article keep its GA status. In reviewing the article, I have found there are some issues that may need to be addressed, and I'll leave the article on hold for seven days for them to be fixed. I have left messages on the talk pages of the main contributors of the article and several other related WikiProjects. Please consider helping address the several points that I listed on the talk page of the article, which shouldn't take too long to fix if multiple editors assist in the workload. If you have any questions, let me know on my talk page and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Happy editing! --Nehrams2020 (talk) 07:48, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! 8th Canadian Infantry Division

Hi folks as you can see from the following template the 8th Div is missing

I was planning an article, but seem to have lost my reference material all I have left is the Division format as :-

Units Raised 12 May 1942 as part of 8th Canadian Infantry Division

HQ 8th Canadian Infantry Division - Raised 15 June 1942 HQ 19th, 20th, 21st Infantry Brigades - Raised 12 May 1942

  • Engineers
    • 21st Field Company, RCE - Raised 15 April 1942
    • 24th Field Company, RCE - Raised 4 May 1942

Is there anybody out there got any further info, we could add and then get this lost Division created ? Jim Sweeney (talk) 10:59, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

The issue is that a majority of the linked units were already part of other divisions (primarily the 2nd & 3rd). Is it possible that this was one of the divisions prepared for attacks on Japan during 1945? At any rate, I'll check my two bookcases of reference material, see what I can find. Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Canadian military history

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! For the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team, SelectionBot 22:30, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

I just found this yesterday, didn't know it existed, thought it had gone begging for a while. Other than the title needing full capitalization, as an article and a series of bios and also tasks/projects undertaken, and events and places in which they were involved, this is perhaps the most important military unit in BC's history, in terms of their relation to the place itself rather than later wars abroad, that is. This is the military task force talkpage so it seemed like a good place to raise group attention towards; it overlaps with British Army formats/portals, or should (also the Pacific Station, RN article and that also large list of bios etc.). So far there's only a few bios done Richard Clement Moody, Henry Spencer Palmer, Arthur Reid Lempriere, not sure who else maybe James Duffy (of 160 or so). There's quite a bit of early military history that could use some dedicated attention; the Victoria Voltigeurs, the Royal Marines detachment in BC (cf. the Lamalcha War which needs to be written, and which some historains adjudge the RN to have lost the skirmish, but won in court...), the Victoria Rifles (the African-American/West Indian police), the Royal Navy installations (dockyard and hospital primarily but their spending BC was mainstay of the economy on the Island until signed over to Canada before the First World War; earlier on the British and French fleets withdrawing from Petropavlovsk limped into Victoria for repair. Also there's the matter of the British Columbia Navy, in which a Premier - McBride I think or ?? - bought two used submarines because of urgent need; province's can't spend money on military so some paperwork was quickly shuffled and Ottawa owned them (by cable telegram) 24 hours later. Timing might have been Russo-Japanese War, but if it wasn't McBride it must have been Great War prep due to rumours of Germans in the Pacific etc (they still had the Marshalls and ... Marianas? ... then).Skookum1 (talk) 04:57, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

Can I ask someone with expertise in Canadian Aviation history to look at Buttress, Saskatchewan. I believe the article should be renamed to something like "CFB Buttress" or "RCAF Buttress" as the article is about a defunct Canadian air force base, which seems to have served the same purpose (and suffered the same fate) as RCAF Detachment Alliston. I don't know enough about it, though to make the call. Thanks. - Canglesea (talk) 02:36, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

This is mentioned re the McGregor River on "McGregor River". BC Geographical Names.'s account of the life of Captain James Herrick McGregor, who seems to also need an article. In wiki-searching it the closest matches with "Highland" in it seemed to be the Black Watch but I didn't want to link that on McGregor Plateau or via a redirect, figured it was best to leave it to folks here to create the articles in question. McGregor was the namesake not only of the plateau, range and river of that name, but also of Herrick Creek and the James River, now officially the Bad River.Skookum1 (talk) 01:19, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

War of 1812 Work Group

May God Bless You Always!

I am looking to form a work group to focused on the War of 1812. A lot of the articles dealing with the War of 1812 are lack citations and references, some need some serious editing, and many need to be expanded. I would like for the articles dealing with the War of 1812 to be "A"-Level or better. The War of 1812 is one of the most neglected American wars, but this need not be the case here. I have been working HLGallon on the Battle of Chippawa, but much work is left to do. I was told to place this work group under the Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Napoleonic era task force, but Canada has a big stake in these articles as well. Anyone interested in helping? (Steve (talk) 19:27, 11 March 2009 (UTC))

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Buffalo 461 / UN Flight 51

Hi,

I created Buffalo 461 yesterday and expanded it this morning. There's a note on the talkpage that perhaps it should be called UN Flight 51 instead. Military history and aviation are not my areas of expertise, so I was hoping that someone here would be good to take up the torch. Based on its significance to Canada, I was thinking it might make a good WP:DYK, but again, perhaps I should leave this up to someone else... (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 14:12, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

I have never heard of this flight, but it was an interesting read; go ahead and nom it at T:TDYK if you haven't already. The worst that can happen is that it fails :P —Ed (TalkContribs) 03:27, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

Changes to popular pages lists

There are a few important changes to the popular pages system. A quick summary:

  • The "importance" ranking (for projects that use it) will be included in the lists along with assessment.
  • The default list size has been lowered to 500 entries (from 1000)
  • I've set up a project on the Toolserver for the popular pages - tools:~alexz/pop/.
    • This includes a page to view the results for projects, including the in-progress results from the current month. Currently this can only show the results from a single project in one month. Features to see multiple projects or multiple months may be added later.
    • This includes a new interface for making requests to add a new project to the list.
    • There is also a form to request a change to the configuration for a project. Currently the configurable options are the size of the on-wiki list and the project subpage used for the list.
  • The on-wiki list should be generated and posted in a more timely and consistent manner than before.
  • The data is now retained indefinitely.
  • The script used to generate the pages has changed. The output should be the same. Please report any apparent inconsistencies (see below).
  • Bugs and feature requests should be reported using the Toolserver's bug tracker for "alexz's tools" - [1]

The wiki article states that the Division captured Dunkirk on 9th September, 1944, citing "Copp, Terry [1992] (2007). The Brigade: The Fifth Canadian Infantry Brigade in World War II. Illustrated edition. Stackpole Books. ISBN 0811734226 (p127)". The Official History of the Candian Army records actions around the port's perimeter after that date, that the 2nd Division moved on on the 17th and that the port was masked with minimal forces. There's a contradiction which is not good for an article rated FA. I don't have the Copp book. Can anyone check it out? Folks at 137 (talk) 15:09, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

Just a reminder but, with about 18 hours to go until nominations close, you'll need to get your skates on if you're thinking of standing as a coordinator. The election is based on self-nominations, so please don't be shy in putting your name forward. The last elections will give you an idea of what to expect.
Otherwise, voting starts tonight at 00:01 (UTC). Any member of the project may support as many of the candidates as they wish. You should cast your votes here.

Canadian Peacekeeping article?

Hey everyone, I was thinking about starting an article on the history of Canadian involvement in UN peacekeeping. I've tried searching for any similar articles but I haven't found any. DND and the CF

There seems to be a void of information when it comes to describing the larger DND organization beyond the CF. I notice the Department of National Defence (Canada) article is a little lacking while, at the same time, there are things in the Canadian Forces article that really should be moved to the other. Specifically, I think the Defence Policy text should move to DND. The section on the Information Management Group should also move over because this is within ADM(IM) and its report line is to the DM and not the CDS. I have also moved the article about the building at 101 Colonel By to Major-General George R Pearkes Building and replaced the content of Department of National Defence Headquarters with a stub that actually describes the NDHQ. There is a discussion happening at Talk:Battle of Britain on whether Canada should be recognized as belligerent or not. On the Categories

The categorization within the project is the first thing that drew my attention. There is a separate category for "Royal Canadian Air Force," but none for "Royal Canadian Navy," nor for any of the Canadian Army Regiments, by name. Given that the Royal Canadian Air Force only existed from 1938 (I believe, without checking too carefully) until 1968, its isolation in the categories is inconsistent. Was this done on purpose? Shouldn't there be a more general category? (Suggestion: Canadian Military Aviation) Additionally, should there not be a "Royal Canadian Navy" category, if the "Royal Canadian Air Force" category is retained, whether as a sub-category of the larger overall category or on its own? I'm brand new to the project, so perhaps already displaying my ignorance. What is the process for suggesting, discussing, and 'approving' (given that it's Wikipedia) the categories for this project? I have some other suggestions, but want to wait until these basic questions are answered for me.... Spartan26 (talk) 02:28, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
