Project banner image

I've used Image:Chinesecoin.jpg from {{China-mil-stub}} as a placeholder in the project banner template, since I have no idea what a good image for Chinese military history is. Feel free to pick a better one; I would avoid anything post-World War II, but you can go with whatever you feel is most appropriate. Thanks! Kirill Lokshin 23:22, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

I've changed it to a picture Chinese character meaning "martial" or "military". Hopefully it should prove satisfactory: It is neither period-specific nor politically controversial (as anything post-WW2 would be). I think 戰 is more appropriate as the image in this case. Military history is 戰史, not 武史. Plus 戰鬥, 戰力, 戰爭, 戰役, 戰勝, 戰敗, 停戰, 終戰...etc, not much words with 武 I can think off the top of my head, other than some martial arts stuff :) BlueShirts 08:47, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
Well, I was using 武 in a historical/literary way... (cf 洪武帝, it didn't mean that he was good at martial arts :D ) Besides 武 looks cooler than 戰 or 軍. Anyway it's a really minor thing so feel free to change it. -- Миборовский U|T|C|M|E|Chugoku Banzai! 06:34, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
I've uploaded 戰 and 軍, just to see if people think they're cooler. I didn't dress them up nice as I did for 武, but at 40px it won't make a difference.

It has to be recognizable at 40px, too ;-) I don't know how much this would play into the image you have in mind, but my attempts to find a good sword image for the weaponry task force were rather unuccessful for this reason. Kirill Lokshin 22:03, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

First things first

OK, we need to settle a few things before we can get to doing some work:

  1. What are our long-term objectives? In other words, what is our general vision for this task force?
  2. What are our short-term objectives? In other words, what shall we focus on for the time being? This is really asking: What areas of Chinese military history is especially deficient right now?

In the meanwhile, we can get to tagging relevant articles with the MILHIST project banner like this:

I think the best bet is to just contribute whatever you can in whatever area comfortable, and submit it here for comments and stuff. For the time being I think it might be difficult to have a concerted effort at one focus, not to mention Chinese military history spans thousands of years! BlueShirts 08:52, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
If anything we should have a rough MOS or something similar, I think the current MOS for Chinese and milhist articles can be improved. I think almost all areas of Chinese military history are deficient at present. We can make our group concentrate on a short list of articles and work together. Let's improve the articles one by one. Thumbs up

Can anybody verify my father's assertion that the AVG pilots got thumbs up from the Chinese and not the other way around. He says it's the figure gesture equivalent of "Ding Hao" and means number one. See Flying Tigers if somebody hasn't ripped it out already. --Wiarthurhu 23:22, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

As far as I know "one" in Chinese number gestures is extending the index finger, not the thumb. Ding Hao means "top good", so yes, #1. I'm too young to know if the thumbs up for "good" is originally Chinese, though. -- Миборовский 01:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

This is somewhat problematic, actually. Barring an explicit statement from him, the images would be by-permission on Wikipedia only, which hasn't been permitted under our image policy for some time. What we'd really like is for him to release the images under a license which would allow everyone (in particular, re-users of Wikipedia content) to use them under the same terms; the license, in this case, would be {{cc-by}} or {{attribution}}, which allows any use as long as the source is credited. Very nice, but have we actually received permission from the author to use the more general license? We don't really want to wind up in a position where we distribute the images in a way he didn't intend, and (aside from the resulting legal issues) lose a valuable potential partner in improving our content. New Leitai fighting platform article

I just finished writing an article on the old Leitai fighting platform. I'm not quite sure if it fits into Chinese military history (just like my article on Zhou Tong (Shaolin Abbot)), but I would like some feed back on it. I posted this on the wikiproject: martial arts page and haven't recieved a reply yet. Tell me if you see anything wrong or missing that would greatly improve the article. Thanks. I haven't added the information yet, but in my research I've found that ancient variations of the Leitai were used by soldiers during the Qin Dynasty to hold Shuai Jiao competitions. The winners would either become bodyguards to the emperor or martial instructors to the armed forces. This info was translated from an ancient Shuai Jiao text by the Guoshu Department of the University of Chinese Culture at Taipei, Taiwan. Now does this not connect the leitai to military history? WWII Article Picture Collage support for inclusion of China-related box

Hello there is a debate at the WWII talk page at Asia/Pacific box for WWII Collage discussion on the fact that the current picture TitlePicture is too Western-centric for the global war and that there isn't any recognition of the efforts of China which had the 2nd greatest casualties of the war so a second collage was made including the 1937 Shangai baby on tracks LIFE picture, Title Picture II. I found a list of pictures and need some help

Question about the military drum platform

Can someone give me sourced details and perhaps a picture of a Zhong Jun Lei Gu Tai (中军擂鼓台 – “Central Military Beat Drum Platform”)? I know there were two kinds—a fixed platform kept at the center of a city (Beijing being a good example) and a movable platform used to direct battle arrays and troop movements during wartime. I would like to know more about when this platform first came about, its dimensions (both fixed and ESPECIALLY movable!), and if the city of Kaifeng had a fixed platform during the Song dynasty.

Also, the “Central Military Beat Drum Platform” sounds like a name for the fixed platform. Was the movable one known as simple “Military Beat…” or just “Beat Drum Platform”. (Ghostexorcist 12:22, 3 December 2006 (UTC))

Paper armor

An old version of Chinese armour had a mention of paper armour (a specialized type of armour), however now the reference is missing and the Paper Armour article was deleted for nonsense for some reason. The BBC documentary What the Ancients Did for Us seem to mention paper armour, but are there any good sources on it being used historically? ColourBurst 19:05, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

Category cleanup request

Hi all. I Just went through and cleaned up (and added) to the major category Category:People's Liberation Army, however it looks like the higher level category Category:Military of the People's Republic of China needs a little cleanup as well. Since I'm not familar enough with this subject, can somebody take a look a see if any of the articles can be moved into appropriate categories and the reference to the master category is removed please? Battle of Gaixia

I have this page on my watchlist, and the article's recent expansion from a stub looks very suspicious. The article now looks like a blend of half-truths and hearsays, as some of the details I can't find in Shiji or Zizhi Tongjian. I have approached the editor responsible for it, User:CCHIPSS, for sources, but he didn't respond. Military face tattooing

The book Law and Order in Sung China (ISBN 0521411211) states: "In 1042 the controllers-general were ordered to select villagers with military talents, in order to triple the number of archers in certain circuits. In some cases such men were apparently to be tattooed on the hand for identification purposes; in others they might be tattooed on the face. The Court in 1042 approved a request that in Ho-tung Circuit the archers to be inducted into the righteous warrior (i-yung) units not be tattooed but that those in shensi be tattooed on the face for use in the victorious protector (pao-chieh) commands. (These tattoos indicated the name and location of a soldier's unit.)" What other instances of face tattooing were used in the Song armies?   2. extand section "Pre-Dynastic Khitan" (388-907) according to my source :
    • Militaro-politic history (cf Xu Elina-Qian Chap. 6 and 7, respectively 82 and 18 pages) : wars and peaces, submissions and rebellions
    • Social and Economic structures (cf Xu Elina-Qian Chap. 4 and 5, respectively 36 and 15 pages)

I will also widely use the Chap 1 and 8 (respectively : Intro and Conclusion) for quick overview.

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues.
