Focus

Is our focus here on fighting by Italians? I will admit that I am more familiar with fighting in Italy than specifically Italian military feats. Or is it both? I suppose most fighting in Italy involved Italians at least to some extent (the Duke of Savoy, at least, was usually involved). But in most early modern conflicts the role of other powers (France, Spain, Austria) is of most importance. john k 12:48, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

Well, I think we can include both fighting by Italians (including fighting by them outside of Italy) and fighting in Italy (including fighting by non-Italians) under "Italian military history". We're claiming applicability rather than exclusive coverage, after all. Kirill Lokshin 12:51, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
Sounds fair enough. john k 13:17, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

This is currently a requested article. I was not aware that there was a siege of Naples in 1494. I thought that King Alfonso simply fled, and Charles VIII took the city without a fight. john k 17:45, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Well, there are two related issues here:
  • The date of the siege—if one occurred—would obviously have been 1495.
  • I've seen references to Charles using cannon to bombard Naples (or perhaps just the Castel Nuovo?) when he arrived there, which suggests that there was some action; whether this can be termed a "siege", or if some other term is more appropriate, is a valid question.
Kirill Lokshin 18:03, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
That would, I think, be a bombardment of Naples, I should think. john k 18:15, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
Duly changed. Thanks for catching that! Kirill Lokshin 18:17, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Well, I've written most of a section of this already, and plan to write the part for Italy in World War II, maybe that of the Risorgimento, but I would definitely prefer that someone else tackled the Ancient Rome and Medieval sections. Someone also put a request on the talk page for a paragraph or so on the Libyan reconquest in the 20's, which I know nothing about. I would consider this to be this project's first major collaboration, so please anyone help if you have time. -KingPenguin 11:14, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

I've added a halfway-coherent section on the Italian Wars; I'll see if I can whip something up for the medieval things later. I suspect this will all need massive copyediting to make it actually flow as a narrative once the sections get fleshed out, though. ;-) Kirill Lokshin 12:14, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

Italian Wars

Anyone know what's up with the article entitled "Italian Wars" ? When I put it in as a link in the article Pierre Nogaret de La Valette it was blue, and the popup tool shows the first para of the article when I hover over the link. However, when I click the link, I get the "this article does not exist please search for it or create it" default thing for a nonexistent article. Same with the link to "Main article" at Military_history_of_Italy#Italian_Wars. What's up?? --Bookgrrl 15:15, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

Hmm, seems to work for me. Maybe try clearing your browser cache? Kirill Lokshin 16:14, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
It seems something is indeed wrong with it. I checked, had the same problem, cleared the cache, no luck, but looking into the history of the page, any old (or even when clicking the history link to the most recent edit) pages do indeed show up, however clicking on the article tab brings me to that unfound page again, despite the discussion and history database that can be accessed through the unfound page. -KingPenguin 17:43, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
Well, now with Kirill's recent edit the problem appears to be fixed, I'm actually getting the article through links now. -KingPenguin 00:06, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
That's quite strange; it's been showing up for me all day. Might be some issue with the server-side caching, but I really have no idea what's causing it. Kirill Lokshin 00:11, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 21:35, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Battle of Parabiago

Hey! Just added battle of Parabiago, maybe it'd deserve a glance for copyedit, cleanup, etc. Also, I wrote a host of entries about 14th-15th centuries condottieri; maybe you're interested (you could surf them from category:House of Malatesta, category:Ordelaffi, category:Scaliger etc.) Bye. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Attilios (talkcontribs)

Requested articles

The requested articles departement gets reorganized. The requests get moved to the specific taskforce. In case of error move it to a concerning task force.

Translating Italian words in article titles

Quick question: I want to move Italian 4 Alpini Division Cuneense to conform to the new naming guidelines - is "Alpini" best left untranslated? Or should I use "Mountain" instead? Essentially, should this be moved to 4th Mountain Division Cuneense or 4th Alpini Division Cuneense? There's probably no need for a country disambiguator, either way. Carom 06:20, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

I'm not entirely sure on this, but I vaguely recall that I've seen it translated as "Alpine Division"; I'll see if I can find a published source for it. Kirill Lokshin 06:24, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks! (and really, you spend to much time doing this... ; )) Carom 06:35, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
If I may weigh in: "Alpini" is a name like "Coldstream Guards" and should never be translated. The correct name in English of the Cuneense would be "4 Alpini Division Cuneense". I have handled this so with the other Alpini unit articles I started i.e. Alpini Brigade Cadore, Alpini Brigade Julia and 5 Alpini Division Pusteria noclador 14:16, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

Question

Does anyone know the ages of Italians at WWII eg: were all men 15-45 asked to fight. Can this info be included? Marinacid 12:03, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Alpini

Hi, I've been doing a lot of military related article-work on wikipedia, but I decided to join up now, as I understood the value of peer-review, while working on the article Romanian Land Forces. I did mostly equipment tables and OrBat graphics i.e. Australia, Austria, Belgium (30 more can be found here).
Currently I'm working on a project to create a comprehensive Alpini "portal". The work done so far can be accessed from here. The articles that are not yet fully finished, I will do within the next two weeks. If I have missed a unit/battle or any other help/suggestion/cooperation is very welcome and much appreciated. noclador 14:12, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

Italian units in Operation Battleaxe (1941)

Hello. I have some questions on the Italian units in Operation Battleaxe.

  • What Italian units were involved? And what's the proper name for them? I know that 2° reggimento artiglieria Celere was involved, but what would be the correct English translation? Oberiko 18:32, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Research request

The article Italian guerrilla war in Ethiopia is an item that I've had some suspicions about for a long while, for reasons (in brief) of plausibility: after the British capture of Italian East Africa, the remaining Italians, who were in an alien & mostly hostile land, had little fight remaining in them. But reality is often implausible. In the last week, I've encountered one piece of evidence that contradicts on point in this article, so I'm asking for someone with the resources -- or is skilled enough in Italian -- to verify the sources cited at the end of this article. If it's all verifiable, I'll be happy; if someone has misrepresented the facts, then something needs to be done. (BTW, I'm not doubting any one person's truthfulness, but after the Sadi Carnot debacle I'd be happier if someone confirmed that the sources actually say what the article claims). Thanks -- llywrch (talk) 21:20, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Italian military history

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! submarines General Sanjuro and General Mola

Archimede class submarine and Spanish submarine C-3 contradict each other, the first says that Archimede was renamed General Sanjuro and Torricelli was renamed General Mola, whilst the latter says that Archimede was renamed General Mola and Torricelli was renamed General Sanjuro. This contradiction requires attention. 76.66.195.190 (talk) 11:29, 26 December 2008 (UTC)

Move request

There is an active proposal to rename the article Italian submarine Sciré (1938) (with acute accent) to Italian submarine Scirè (1938) (with grave accent). Interested editors may comment on the proposal at the article's talk pageBellhalla (talk) 16:13, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

Changes to popular pages lists

There are a few important changes to the popular pages system. A quick summary:

  • The "importance" ranking (for projects that use it) will be included in the lists along with assessment.
  • The default list size has been lowered to 500 entries (from 1000)
  • I've set up a project on the Toolserver for the popular pages - tools:~alexz/pop/.
    • This includes a page to view the results for projects, including the in-progress results from the current month. Currently this can only show the results from a single project in one month. Features to see multiple projects or multiple months may be added later.
    • This includes a new interface for making requests to add a new project to the list.
    • There is also a form to request a change to the configuration for a project. Currently the configurable options are the size of the on-wiki list and the project subpage used for the list.
  • The on-wiki list should be generated and posted in a more timely and consistent manner than before.
  • The data is now retained indefinitely.
  • The script used to generate the pages has changed. The output should be the same. Please report any apparent inconsistencies (see below).
  • Bugs and feature requests should be reported using the Toolserver's bug tracker for "alexz's tools" - [1]
