Battle of the Red Wall

Could someone please tell me if Battle of the Red Wall, a 'complete Bulgarian victory ... the five French divisions lost between 40% and 75% of their stuff' is a hoax or not? Thanks! The Land (talk) 20:47, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Dubious image

So, this image (right) has been kicking around Wikipedia for a bit; the caption translates literally as "trenches in Flanders in the first world war in La Lys, 1918", taken from a Portuguese history book, and it's always been taken as showing members of the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps. Yorkist (talk · contribs) pointed out that they look like they're wearing French uniforms, not the British ones used by Portugal, and I'd have to agree; anyone else have thoughts on the matter, or a better guess as to quite what it might specifically show?

In the long run I suppose we'll have to relabel and replace it, but... Shimgray | talk | 21:32, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

Conflict over Gallipoli Campaign

I need help on this issue. There is a use named User:Turkish Flame who is waging an edit war over Gallipoli Campaign. He claims that Gallipoli Campaign is part of European theatre of World War I. The Gallipoli Campaign currently classified as part of Middle Eastern theatre of World War I. At the talk page of Middle Eastern theatre of World War I, there is an discussion of renaming of this theatre differently, but there was no conclusion. There are Turkish editors which was thought that Gallipoli is in Europe part of the Ottoman Empire (though there were operations on the Asian side) and it should be included in the European theatre. I could not find any western source that classified Gallipoli being part of European theatre. Also we know that military operations in this campaign originally an extension of Middle Eastern forces. Initial plans of this campaign established in Egypt. I have informed this user [1] also tried to communicate with him [2]. He did not responded to these communication attempts. He constantly continue engage the changes [3]. I also warned him about 3RR rule and dispute resolution [4]. --TarikAkin (talk) 18:10, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

It's obviously part of the European theatre of WWI both geographically and historically. --Turkish Flame 18:33, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
Fine but we are not talking about geography or general history. This is "military history" of World War One. A history of operations and sides, not the geological or cultural advances. I could not find any source that included Gallipoli under the European theatre of World War I. Is this your own idea (WP:POV) or can you provide a source? --TarikAkin (talk) 18:43, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
[5]First World War - Europe[6]Gallipoli: Turkey & Europe[7]... --Turkish Flame 19:09, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
I checked all your links. They are talking about Gallipoli Campaign. The issue is not if Gallipoli existed or not. None of these sources claims Gallipoli is part of Eropean Theatre. As you know Eropean Theatre is divided into Fronts, and Fronts into Campaigns. There are (Western Front, Eastern Front, Italian Front, Balkans Front and Naval conflict). There are many sources that explains these fronts, but non included the Gallopoli. Can you find a a reliable source, a book, a published article which includes Gallipoli in any of these Fronts that established the Eropean Theatre. --TarikAkin (talk) 19:22, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
It's true, not one of those directly catagorizes Gallipoli as being in the European theater. I've never heard of it being in the European theater before, always in the Middle Eastern. – Joe N 20:56, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
Some of them directly puts Gallipoli in the European theatre, and some of them categorize Gallipoli with other European theatres. In one of the sources, it says Enver Pasha, saw the war in Europe as an opportunity for Turkey to take back lands that had been absorbed by the Russian Empire. Please look at [8] again. You can see the map of Europe on the top of the page and please click on "play animation". Also on the right of the page, you can see links of other European wars like the Battle of Verdun, the Western Front etc. And please look at [9] again. It mentions about The European Situation, Before the Campaign, and another map of Europe again on the page. None of the sources mention something about the Middle Eastern theatre. They are all about Europe and Galipoli. --Turkish Flame 23:41, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
(a) The Gallipoli was Ottoman land in 1915. It was not an operation to capture land in Europe as you stated "absorbed by the Russian Empire." (b) Lands "absorbed by the Russian Empire" generally refers to lands lost at Russo-Turkish War, 1877-78 (c) WP:Verifiability is an issue with your arguments. The web discussion forms such as delinetciler.net are not credible sources. You are misinterpreting the world "Europe," and you assume it means "European Theatre". Also "You can see the map of Europe on the top of the page" is really not supporting argument for Gallipoli being part of "European theatre." It sounds like "you can see Russia" from your house. I'm not satisfied. You should bring more substantial information to defend your argument. --TarikAkin (talk) 00:32, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
Now it's your turn to find reliable sources which show Gallipoli Middle Eastern(?). --Turkish Flame 01:08, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
It is impossible to find an article that states "Gallipoli is not part of European operations." It would be like finding an article that states: "Turks are not British". You can read European theatre of World War I, and see that it is not. It is your burden to provide the proof that it is part of European theatre. I assume you are Turkish; listen this "Ottoman Empire coordinated its operations from a single command located at the capital, high command, under department of War". There was not multiple operational centers for Ottomans. If you take your time and read "Ordered to die" By Edward J. Erickson you can clearly recognized this fact. For me, it does not matter if you call it "Middle Eastern" or "Ottoman theatre.", but it is clearly not European. As User:Joe_N said, the terminology "middle eastern operations" used in referring to major conflicts with Ottoman Empire. You are welcome to ask for an arbitration. I will obey the community decision. Would you? --TarikAkin (talk) 02:45, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

The only source I have on WW1, other than Haig’s dairy, is 'A military atlas of the First World War' by Arthur Banks 1975. However he doesn’t talk about theatres of war in his work, making this a possibly futile post and could just fan the flames, but his introduction of the campaign does tie it in with the Middle East imo:

“The attempt to force the Dardanelles and fain control of Constantinople and the Straits was the first strategically imaginative project of the war. Its origins lie in a proposal made by Churchill to the War Council of 25 November 1914. He argued that 'the ideal method of defending Egypt; and the Suez Canal from an invading Turkey army 'was by an attack on the Gallipoli Peninsula' which, if successful would enable the Allies to 'dictate terms at Constantinople'. Ibid p. 109

The author shows on the maps that while the main ground battle took place in European Turkey the Naval forces attacked both European and Asiatic Turkey; which imo would make it a little differcult to say that this was part of the "European theater" if fighting also took place outside of which.--EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 02:23, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

It is definitely part of the Middle-East campaign, given that it was conducted in a portion of the world that we historically consider to be "the middle east", even if it is technically in Europe. It has to do with what the sources refer to it as, and all of my sources refer to it as part of the Middle East Campaign. Cam (Chat) 05:09, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
I'd agree that it was deemed to be part of the Middle-Eastern campaign; and although I can't find the wretched book at the moment, I recently purchased Tim Traver's Gallipoli 1915 which is quite a new book, and I'm almost certain he places Gallipoli in the Middle-Eastern campaign area. Skinny87 (talk) 09:41, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
To throw in a different perspective, my understanding was that the Allied powers considered it (at least at first) to be associated with the Salonica campaign - which was quite definitely European! Do we know who was assigned overal command, or anything like that? Shimgray | talk | 13:37, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
This may help taken from the articles
  • Gallipoli Campaign In Turkey, the campaign is known as the Çanakkale Savaşları, after the province of Çanakkale.
  • Çanakkale Çanakkale (IPA: [ʧɑˈnɑkːɑle]) is a town and seaport in Turkey, in Çanakkale Province, on the southern (Asian) coast of the Dardanelles (or Hellespont) at their narrowest point.

So it would appear that the battle/campaign is known by Turkish sources after the province of Çanakkale which is on the southern Asian coast therefore it can not be part of the European theatre of World War I --Jim Sweeney (talk) 13:15, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

It is my view that the Gallipoli campaign was part of the European theatre of World War I. I know that's just my opinion but we need to find out who was in overall command of the campaign. Gaia Octavia Agrippa Talk | Sign 17:57, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
"The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps was formed in Egypt in 1915 and operated during the Battle of Gallipoli". The commander assigned to the operation, Sackville Carden, marked by service in Egypt and the Sudan, however at the onset of the campaign he was superintendent of the Malta dockyard. The overall command was on Ian Standish Monteith Hamilton. Wikipedia gives this cited information: "Whilst a senior and respected officer, perhaps more experienced in different campaigns than most, he was considered too unconventional, too intellectual and too friendly with politicians to be given a command on the western front.[7]". --TarikAkin (talk) 21:14, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
Perhaps Gallipoli is neither the Middle East (Sinai and Palestine etc) nor European theatre but (inconveniently) between the two. The category structure can handle it, why can't the articles? GraemeLeggett (talk) 21:41, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
Hmm. I'm thinking along the lines of Laggett here—Gallipoli isn't really a part of the Middle East theatre, but it isn't really a part of the European theatre. It was more of a weird anomaly than anything else. —Ed 17 (Talk / Contribs) 17:03, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
The BBC -History section: The Middle East during World War One By Professor David R Woodward may be interesting especially the section "Defeat at Gallipoli and in Mesopotamia." --TarikAkin (talk) 04:35, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
Churchill's World Crisis, vol. 2, discusses the arguments at British Cabinet, General Staff and Admiralty level about the Gallipoli campaign. The factions were the "Westerners", who advocated concentrating on the Western front in France and Belgium only, and the "Easterners" who argued for a peripheral campaign against Germany's weaker ally, Turkey. The fronts on which the British were engaged against Turkey were Mesopotamia, Egypt/Palestine/Syria, and Gallipoli (also northern Persia / Caucasus, but only near the end of the war). While the Gallipoli peninsula is in Europe, albeit separated from Asia by only five miles of water, there is no question that from the British (and French) perspective, the Gallipoli campaign was part of the "eastern", or "Asian" or perhaps even "Middle Eastern" sphere, as opposed to the Western and later Italian fronts, which were obviously in the "Western" or "European" theatre. Although the question became more complicated than this western/eastern dichotomy, Gallipoli cannot be arbitrarily separated from the other Middle Eastern theatres and lumped together with the Western Front. Collaboration

Although it may be hard for one individual to do most of the work to get WWI to FA all by themselves, I think we (this task-force and possibly all of MILHIST) should have an all-out collaboration to get this extremely important article to FA level. Although I'm not quite sure how this would be organized, I'd like opinions on this potentially great accomplishment. Mm40 (talk) 15:33, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

We have started a Collaberative drive to get articles related to the First World War, including the main article itself, up to featured status, or at least improved, within the next few years. However, keep in mind that rewriting this article will be very difficult, both because of its large scope and the ethnic and nationalistic tensions and biases that are related to it. – Joe N 16:45, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

Changes to popular pages lists

There are a few important changes to the popular pages system. A quick summary:

  • The "importance" ranking (for projects that use it) will be included in the lists along with assessment.
  • The default list size has been lowered to 500 entries (from 1000)
  • I've set up a project on the Toolserver for the popular pages - tools:~alexz/pop/.
    • This includes a page to view the results for projects, including the in-progress results from the current month. Currently this can only show the results from a single project in one month. Features to see multiple projects or multiple months may be added later.
    • This includes a new interface for making requests to add a new project to the list.
    • There is also a form to request a change to the configuration for a project. Currently the configurable options are the size of the on-wiki list and the project subpage used for the list.
  • The on-wiki list should be generated and posted in a more timely and consistent manner than before.
  • The data is now retained indefinitely.
  • The script used to generate the pages has changed. The output should be the same. Please report any apparent inconsistencies (see below).
  • Bugs and feature requests should be reported using the Toolserver's bug tracker for "alexz's tools" - [10]

Scope questions

I've recently been looking for articles that may be within the scope of this WikiProject (Military History) and task force (World War I), and I have some questions about scope, which I'll post here periodically, in the hope that other may have opinions that will help guide me when considering similar things in future.

  • Any soldier whose career included WWI (example: William M. Wright) - in scope?
  • Any documentary or secondary literature about WW1 (example: Heroes All) - in scope?
  • Any work of fiction set in WWI (example: War Horse (play)) - in scope?

My thoughts were that works of fiction might not be strictly military history, so might be out-of-scope, but that documentaries and books about WWI are historical, so those are in scope. As far as soldiers (or other military people), I'm assuming that their involvement in WWI should be more than peripheral. Are there any guidelines on scope anywhere, as if there are some items excluded from this task force, but still related to WWI, I might try and ensure those type of articles are gathered up by another WikiProject. Carcharoth (talk) 00:03, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

Another example: My Boy Jack (poem), My Boy Jack (play), My Boy Jack (film), are respectively an example of WWI poetry and two adaptations based on the story behind the poem. The latter has been included within the Military History WikiProject and the WWI task force, so I've done the same for the other two. Carcharoth (talk) 01:08, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
For the first two, I'd say yes to both the Project and the TF. For the third, I'm really not sure - I can't recall if we've dealt with war fiction before, and, if so, what the result was. – Joe N 01:09, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
I have some more examples, which I will list below and then ask at the Military History WikiProject talk page for input here, as some of this touches on scope for the WikiProject as a whole. Carcharoth (talk) 06:53, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

A few more examples:

Are those in scope for the Military History WikiProject and WWI task force?

On the latter point, I think that poetry and literature and fiction produced by WWI veterans in response to their war experiences should be in scope, but that fictional accounts or poetry written later, as a more general cultural response may be out of scope, but that might be a silly way to treat it. I guess what I am trying to do is distinguish between 'serious' stuff that gets critical acclaim and responses, and any old story or film that is set in or about World War I. There is a wide range of this, a lots in the relevant categories, and much of it may be better handled by Literature, Film, Book, Poetry wikiprojects. What is the best way to handle this? I'm going to work on the articles regardless, but don't want to post to this WikiProject about them if there is more enthusiasm elsewhere to work on these articles (assuming there is any enthusiasm at all!). Carcharoth (talk) 07:18, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

Just did another load of tagging and assessing (I'll explain how I found the articles and point out some things that may need cleaning up, but will do that in a new section). Among the articles I found that weren't tagged are some that I think are out of scope, but as before, I am leaving the articles here so people can confirm whether I am judging the scope correctly. Here are the five articles I left out of scope (i.e. I didn't tag with WP:MILHIST or the WWI task force parameter): First Eagles: The Great War 1918, A Soldier of the Great War, World War One (video game), List of World War I video games, The Entente: Battlefields World War I. That is three video games, one list of video games, and a war novel from 1991. Carcharoth (talk) 07:14, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

Literary and cultural World War I resources

As above, I'm not sure how much the Military History WikiProject gets involved in the literary and cultural response to WWI, but there is a fantastic resource and collection of links here. Carcharoth (talk) 02:12, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

In-title searches, tagging, and possible clean-ups needed

I recently tagged 27 articles with the Military History Wikiproject tag and the WWI task force parameter. The way I found these (using an "intitle" search) might be useful in future, so I'm going to add links here to the searches I did. The numbers in brackets are the number of results for these searches at the time of writing. Periodic checks could be done on these searches if this is not already done.

There are several clean-up possibilities here:

I also suspect that there are a lot more articles out there on the topic of World War I that aren't tagged with the Military History WikiProject tag or WWI taskforce, or maybe with the MilHist tag but no WWI parameter. It is actually quite difficult to find these untagged articles because of the sheer numbers of existing tagged ones. Looking at "what links here" for World War I doesn't help, and neither do searches involving "World War I" because there is no easy way I know to query such searches to find out what is on the talk pages of the results of such searches. It might be possible to generate a list of all the articles tagged with the WWI parameter (fairly easy) and compare to all the articles in Category:World War I and its subcategories, though some of the articles are in the categories but (mostly) out of scope for the WikiProject and task force (though I'm still unclear on where the scope ends). What this method won't pick up on is articles with no talk pages or talk page project tags, and no World War I-related category. Those have to be found another way. New articles can be picked up by that bot that lists new articles by project if it is doing that for this task force. Older articles that slipped through the net, I suppose you just have to hope someone finds them? Is there a reliable way to find stuff that hasn't been tagged that should have been? Expansion of article I have created

Hi there, I'm popping over from WP:CRICKET to see if an article I have created about a Hampshire cricketer, Alexander Johnston can be expanded by you guys. Johnston had a distinguished military career, particularly in WWI where he was a Brigadier General who was awarded the DSO, MC and Croix de Guerre. The WWI section on him is a bit bare and considering you guys know more about the subject and where to look for it, I was wondering if you could expand and reference that section.
