Volunteer

Hey, I'm a history major at the Royal Military College in Kingston, ON, but I'm originally from Parrsboro. I can assist with regards to Cumberland County and the Minas Basin/Bay of Fundy. (Psyklek 06:12, 22 March 2007 (UTC))

Halifax Debate

Hello fellow WPNSers. We have a very interesting debate going on the Talk:Halifax,_Nova_Scotia page, I am not going to prejudice it by talking about it, just please go and chime in with your 2 cents. WayeMason 14:46, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

Updates, Updates

I have added a number of templates that I have been working on, in one case, the HRM one has been bubbling for 18 months. Thanks to Plasma East and Sonyuser for input. {{Infobox Village of Nova Scotia}} & {{Infobox_HRM_Planning_Area}} need help being implemented and information filled out.

{{Politics_of_Nova_Scotia}} is now installed, comments please, also articles it links to need to be tightened up and edited.

I have updated the top page of the project, archived the discussion until this year, and changed the focus to the Nova Scotia page. HRM gets an A rating, the provincial page is only a B! And it really does deserve a C or a B, its pretty long on history and short on everything else! WayeMason 11:44, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

County Map

I created a county map for Cumberland County and I'd like some feedback about it. Please look at it and let me know what you think!

(Psyklek 11:05, 13 April 2007 (UTC))

Hello. I'm writing to inform the members of this project that I have moved the article List of Nova Scotia-related topics to Wikipedia:WikiProject Nova Scotia/List of Nova Scotia-related topics per discussion here. -- Black Falcon (Talk) 21:13, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

Just did that article, based on the page of sites that need to be started. Anyhow, it's written by me, but based on what I could find online. If somebody know more about it, please add to it. Also, now that it has a page started, should we move it from where it is on the main page?--RobNS 18:13, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

I added that the Alehouse is the setting for the Keith's beer commercials.--Kirkoconnell 19:12, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
Not sure that needs to be there Kirk. Maybe it could be re-worded somehow. It sounds like an opinion now.--RobNS 23:48, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
I took a stab at it this morning... I think it reads in a more encyclopedic fashion. Good start though! I think that what would be great is if someone went and found out the name of the building and we renamed the article to that. The building would have its historic name on the historic plaque on the front. If either of you want a real challenge, take a look at Downtown Halifax it reads like it was written by the DBDC people... total advertising.WayeMason 10:35, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

How do I join the editting group?

Is there some kind of vote or do I just say I am an editor now?

I thought I would gt more involved with editting Articles and I travelled around the province and usually keep the Glace Bay/ Cape Breton articles honest when I can.

Please get back to me
:)

Dear Kirk, by all means, please edit away, we'd love to see your contributions. Actually, I have to get my act together and do more too. My last page creation here? the Halifax Ale House. I have to get moving as their are a lot of NS towns with little or no description. Me zon, consider yerself an editor. Cheers from Clayton Park West!--RobNS 02:01, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

My updates so far

He Guys, I had a bit of free time so I thought I would go through the article and make sure that the NS Project was included in all the discussion pages for the Subdivisions of Nova Scotia and that the Subdivisions of Nova Scotia had the Subdivisions of Nova Scotia tag.

If there is an article, I can confirm it does not have the Subdivisions of Nova Scotia tag and the NS Project tag in teh discussion page.

Also I am in the process of fixing up the pseudo info boxs that some of the towns have and replace them with real info boxes and I have been using my keen sense of sight and replacing all of the images with locations on them with pushpins over the Nova Scotia map. Takes a few seconds but I think it looks sharper if they all have the same. I intend to include the nova scotia location map for each sub div in each info box.

So i don't know if I am doing the kind of job you are looking for so you may want to check my edits. --Kirkoconnell 22:19, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

I would like to contribute

Digging through and old cedar chest belonging to my late grand father's mother. I found a file folder containing very old pages which were once stapled together, the staples have since rusted away. The pages are what I believe are a teachers copy of the History of Sydney Mines for use to teach students. The front pages reads as follows:

    HISTORY OF SYDNEY MINES
        compiled by
    Mrs. Rederick G. Bain
 Convener of Program Committee
            for
GREY HOME AND SCHOOL ASSOCIATION

I would like to contribute the information contained within these pages to the wiki for Sydney Mines in the best manner possible. Please send me a message or and email letting me know to go about this. -- (Withinside 16:32, 14 July 2007 (UTC))

Thats sounds like information the Beaton insitution in CBU would be interested in. If I were you, I would scan them in the best way I could, without destorying them, and the highest resolution possible to you so you have the information and then look into donating the actual papers to people who would appreicate them/have the ability to look after them. That being said, any information in them can be entered into Wikipedia if you like, thats the whole point. You may want to cite the article as a source. I doubt any information would be cause anyone to object. It doesn't say Sydney Mines was discovered by an alien race etc. etc.. Anyway post away. Do what you can.--Kirkoconnell 17:39, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

Cumberland County v2.0

After a failed attempt at a county map, I have decided to remove the ugly list from the main page for Cumberland County, Nova Scotia and create a separate List of Communities, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. Let me know your opinion on this change! Andrew647 15:32, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Gay Pride Flag Flapping --- (I made this entry on the Talk Truro, Nova Scotia page as well... didn't look like it gets much attention)... Is this the page where I should raise the issue of the "current affairs" entry on the Truro, Nova Scotia page? Previously placed under "Town History" (???), an entry is made regarding the recent vote by town council to not fly the rainbow flag over town hall. When looking at other municipal pages on wikipedia, I see no precedent for such content. Nor does any other municipality/city/town have a running "current affairs" section. It would be quite reasonable to have this article placed on a page dealing with gay rights issues, etc, but not on a municipality's page. I don't know the protocol for dealing with this issue, only that I have been properly scolded for having deleted the politicizing content. It should be removed. I fear that if it is not moved, the current affairs may become a running blog of every current issue in Truro. Obi123 14:00, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

You are quite right, this is hardly encyclopedic knowledge. I usually think in terms of "Will this likely be important knowledge in 100 years?" I doubt may will even remember it then. Now if there was some major riot in which people were injuried... then fine. That hasn't happened... yet :P lol -Kirkoconnell 15:02, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

Adjacent Communities Template

I've been searching for one, and I found it. I'm going to use it in all the Cumberland County communities once I find the time to add it, I'm bogged down with writing essays right now. Think we can add it as a Wikiproject Nova Scotia standard?

Here is an example:

Andrew647 01:16, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

I've started adding this template to some communities in Cumberland. I will continue to add it to each one in the county. Can anyone make similar edits in other areas of the province? Andrew647 22:29, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

Roads Template

I've created a template for all of the roads and highways of Nova Scotia, and added it to the main page for WP:NS, and would like feedback. Andrew647 02:53, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

After some discussion with the fine folks at WikiProject Canada Roads, this template has been withdrawn from use in favour of infoboxes that contain similar information. Andrew647 15:18, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:NS-Flag.png

Image:NS-Flag.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Article with copyvio and other problems

Louisdale, Nova Scotia has had copyright violation problems dating back to early 2006. I realized this after two editors started conflicting over the history of the community. I've deleted all revisions since early 2006 because they contained copyright violations. I've protected the page for a week because of the conflict. Can some experienced members of the project coordinate a rewrite, supervise the article, and/or mentor the editors. (For non-admins, they are Grandiqueferry (talk · contribs) and 142.167.242.246 (talk · contribs) recently with Johncena325 (talk · contribs), Uglybaraco222 (talk · contribs) and Billpeters888 (talk · contribs) earlier) I'll unprotect (and would have no objection to any other admin unprotecting) provided a couple experienced editors are willing to supervise the article. GRBerry 17:42, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

As it was requested, I've expanded upon the problems at User talk:GRBerry#Louisdale, Nova Scotia. I've also previously posted to WP:AN/I letting other admins know that they should unprotect if the article starts getting supervision from experienced editors. GRBerry 19:52, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

Template merge with WikiProject Canada

Like the other provinces, this project's template has been merged with the {{WikiProject Canada}} template. You can now tag articles talk pages with {{WikiProject Canada | ns=yes}}. This will allow you to assess articles using class= and importance=. Nova Scotia in the Dutch Empire

Hello everyone! There is a discussion at Talk:Dutch Empire#Request For Comment: Map, because user Red4tribe has made a map of the Dutch Empire (Image:Dutch Empire 4.png) that includes significative parts of Nova Scotia. Would you like to comment? Thank you. The Ogre (talk) 15:21, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

I commented in the Acadia section. basically the Dutch empire never held any land in Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia/Acadia was a British/French battlefield. Any land held would have only been for a short time and certainly not noteworthy on a Dutch Empire Map. -Kirkoconnell (talk) 20:06, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! For the 1.0 Editorial Team, §hepBot (Disable) 21:11, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Nova Scotia

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! For the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team, SelectionBot 23:25, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

St. Marys River Article

The St. Marys River article currently contains the claim that it is 250 km long; I do not believe that this is correct, though I do not know the correct length. Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 06:11, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Municipalities

I notice that some articles about municipalities take the form Shelburne, Nova Scotia (municipal district) with a redirect FROM the formal name of the municipality, ie Municipality of the District of Shelburne, Nova Scotia. This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

News articles no longer available

I was just checking the references for Green Party of Nova Scotia and most are broken. Both CBC and Chronic Herald seem to be removing old articles. The Herald seems to make some available for a fee. I haven't had any success finding them at archives.org either. This obviously has implications for many article references, especially if (as in this article) only an url is given with no date.

Any thoughts anyone? --Derek Andrews (talk) 18:49, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

I have noticed this too. I think the important thing is to make sure that even if it is an online article, that you use a good full citation, newspaper name, date, full headline etc so it still acts as a good reference when the online article is pulled, allowing someone to dig up the print article if it is important to them.Letterofmarque (talk) 14:07, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

Nova Scotia articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Nova Scotia articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Great Resource for Community Articles

The Nova Scotia Archives and Records Management has put the book "Place Names of Nova Scotia" online: http://www.gov.ns.ca/nsarm/virtual/places/ It has name origins and very brief histories of every town and village including a lot of remote and obscure settlements (some of favourite places!) Some of the info is a bit dated, but the historical material is a great verifiable source for any community article.Letterofmarque (talk) 14:16, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

Destination-ns.com/

It appears that http://www.destination-ns.com/ is a dead domain, and its former contents were used on articles of many small communities in the province. Members of the project should undertake a review of the articles that are affected. PKT(alk) 19:37, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

The article Maritimer English has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

A search for references found no published (gBooks) support for this article, fails WP:N and WP:V

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Jeepday (talk) 16:28, 24 December 2010 (UTC)

The online version of the Chronicle Herald is only available to non-subscribers for a few days after publication. It is therefore very important to provide a full citation including the article title and date of publication. I would also recommend that WebCite be used to archive the url. -- Derek Andrews (talk) 19:58, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

Yes we should WebCite the thing.Moxy (talk) 20:36, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

Barnstar

There is a thing that I made to improve the Nova Scotia article. When the article reaches a featured article, everyone that helped will get a special one time barnstar. ~~Awsome EBE123~~(talk | Contribs) 22:38, 23 February 2011 (UTC) Starting now.

WikiWomen's History Month

Hi everyone. March is Women's History Month and I'm hoping a few folks here at WP:Nova Scotia will have interest in putting on events (on and off wiki) related to women's roles in Nova Scotia's history, society and culture. We've created an event page on English Wikipedia (please translate!) and I hope you'll find the inspiration to participate. These events can take place off wiki, like edit-a-thons, or on wiki, such as themes and translations. Please visit the page here: WikiWomen's History Month. Thanks for your consideration and I look forward to seeing events take place! SarahStierch (talk) 23:41, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

Hello There. I mean this in the nicest possible way, but I feel completely unable to address any of this. In my editing practices, I tend to edit articles to correctly reflect "what actually happened" as opposed to "what some guy told me at Tims happened". If someone here has some sort of Women's reflective interest then maybe they can direct themselves to help but I always just edit the facts, not particularly shaded facts. And the last thing you want me to do is organize an off-wiki Women's event because it will likely have beer, wings, and hardly dressed women at it, which from experience is highly frowned upon in the female community. Thanks for paying attention to our little Project though. -Kirkoconnell (talk) 18:14, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
I don't think it would be appropriate for you to dictate the attire of the attendees to your event, but beer and wings are fine. I'm a bit confused by your suggestion that facts related to women's roles in Nova Scotia's history, society and culture are somehow "shaded". They are probably neglected (at least on Wikipedia), but I don't understand the implication that adding information on Nova Scotian women to Wikipedia is somehow inherently biased (any more than adding information about Nova Scotia is biased). Request for cleanup assistance at List of city nicknames in Canada#Nova Scotia

This section of this list article needs cleanup. In particular, references based on reliable sources (not user-generated media such as blogs, forums, tweets, etc.) for the numerous of nicknames are required, as well as weeding out editor-derived/questionable nicknames from the genuine nicknames of widespread usage. I've cleaned up the Alberta section, and am looking to the members of the applicable provincial/territorial WikiProjects to help out with the other sections including this one. Thanks, Hwy43 (talk) 06:56, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
