Categorization of Sicilian Cities[edit]

Currently, there are both "Category:Cities in Sicily" and "Category:Towns in Sicily". I've been wondering how we might categorize the municipalities in Sicily properly. Should we rename the categories "Communities in Sicily" or maybe just create a category for each province (eg Create a Category called "Cities in the Province of Agrigento")? Currently there is no real logic to why some articles are in the "cities" category and some are in "towns". -AKeen 05:16, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Akeen - good call - wise to get that right now in the early stages of our project. Out of curiosity, I did a quick check of what happens for France currently in en.wiki. Under Category:France they have a sub category Category:Cities, towns and villages in France, and then under it they have a sub-categories for the communes of (presumably) every province. So that definitely looks like the way to go, because eventually all the regions of Italy will be able to do the same. The only question becomes: do we go with cities, towns, municipilaties or communes? Attractive as the latter seems to us (because it resembles the Italian and Sicilian terms), commune in English normally has a very different meaning (like a hippy commune or squat). Cities is too grand a term for most of them (some of these comuni are absolutely tiny with barely 1,000 people). So I reckon that leaves either towns or municipalities. Occasionally, "town" will not be a great descriptor either, so maybe municipality is the go (which really equates very closely to the definition of comune). I would be interested in hearing from others before we decide which way to go - we would then make it very clear in the project page to ensure consistency and uniformity. ρ¡ρρµ δ→θ∑ - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 06:32, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Emptying Towns in Sicily and Cities in Sicily[edit]

There are currently both "Category:Cities in Sicily" and "Category:Towns in Sicily," so I'll be working on emptying these into the appropriate Category: "Municipalities of the Province of [Insert Correct Province here]"- AKeen 06:24, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I meant perhaps the category "Towns in Sicily" should be deleted, since "Cities and Towns in Sicily" already fulfills this purpose. Likewise, "Towns in Campania" and "Cities in Campania" both exist as categories (with no specific differentiation). There should be a category called "Cities and towns in Campania" instead, following the categorization conventions for Sicily. I was suggesting other provinces should follow the categorization scheme we have created for Sicily. The other double-categories for the cities towns, ie Category:Towns in Campania and Category:Cities in Campania are being combined to categories like Category:Cities and towns in Campania, thanks to Sicily's lead. - AKeen 18:56, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguity[edit]

You may have noted that in it.wiki, for the disambig. they use the name of the comune plus the abbreviation of the province, e.g. it:Aragona (AG). Someone on the project, sorry, I can't remember who, pointed out that these two letter abbreviations of the provinces mean something in Italy, but do not mean anything to the average English speaker. So, I have gradually been replacing these with the following format: San Cataldo (Sicily). Where comuni have the same name in other parts of Italy, it is simply a matter of putting the name of the region in brackets. I think it would be a rare case that an ambiguity occurs within the region, but where it does, it is usually not another comune. Wikipedia:Naming conventions (city names) says the convention for Italy is Places in Italy are disambiguated by province (abbreviated name in parentheses) as is the universal custom in Italy. Thus: Manciano (AR), Manciano (GR). --Scott Davis ^Talk 07:40, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Automatic Category Inclusion?[edit]

Now that it seems there is template for each province, like {{Province of Enna}}, I was thinking it might be a good idea to automatically include the category ie "Category:Municipalities of the Province of *PROVINCE*" in each of the templates so they don't have to be manually added by editors. This could be applicable to all of Italy. I tired it with the Ragusa template, and it seems to work.

Additionally, this makes sense now since the category "Cities and towns in the Province of *REGION*" are being created in replacement of both a "Cities in *REGION*" category and "Towns in *REGION*"- and these could serve as the parent categories for the "Municiplaities of" Categories. - AKeen 19:08, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Avoid self-references[edit]

The lead section on this list reads like it belongs on a WikiProject page, not in the main article space. In principle, our users are not interested in the nuts-and-bolts of how to create a free encyclopedia, merely in the real world information which we can give them. For the same reason, the main links from the list should be to articles in English, not in Italian or Sicilian. See WP:SELF. Physchim62 (talk) 10:59, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree- perhaps this page should be moved to a Wikiproject page, it does mostly refer to WP:Sicily. A simpler page with just a listing of municipalities could then be in this page space. Thoughts? - AKeen 18:45, 22 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I can do a list of comuni (I have the full list of 2006 populations in a database for exactly such a job), but there are already lists for each province...
