Portal

Is there a Space Colonization Portal? Chadlupkes 18:16, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

Not that I know of. Yet. - Reaverdrop 21:44, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
Is there a need for a Space Colonization Portal? --Exodio 23:20, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
I would say no. This isn't a very large (wide-focus) wikiproject, and the status of space colonization isn't likely to change much in the near future (i.e. 1-2 years), so "news" is relative. siafu 23:39, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
<EDIT>I created a portal with an "Inactive" status and left a message for people who try starting a Portal for it. That way we can also plan ahead for a time when it becomes valuable to have a portal, and the framework is already in place. --Exodio 23:56, 31 July 2006 (UTC)--Exodio 14:19, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

Template

We also need a template that we can put at the top of discussion pages for the articles that fall within the project. Chadlupkes 22:22, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

Started template {{wpspace}}. Trying to determine the best placement, and adding articles as I go. Chadlupkes 20:04, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
There is an important difference between the wpspace template and the Space Colonization template. The wpspace template is for talk pages and project pages, while the Template:Space colonization is for the article pages themselves. I'll work on getting these templates up to speed and accurate. Help would be appreciated! Chadlupkes 19:37, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
ChadIupkes - Something along those lines? --Exodio 01:42, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Addition of articles for the Sun, the outer planets and their moons

I have reverted a series of articles about the colonization of the Sun, the outer planets and their moons to redirect to Colonization of the outer solar system. The new articles had no content and the Colonization of the Sun article is strong evidence, I think, against this being a misguided attempt to be helpful. As redirects they do no harm. I also reverted the addition of links to these articles in Colonization of the outer solar. --agr 02:17, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

Scope

"It is not intended to cover robotic space exploration or historical manned spaceflight" Just a question on how focused this project is. Why wouldn't robotic space exploration be covered, if it is being used to scout out possible new locations for colonies to exist? What kind of data would it need to send back to be analyzed? How many projects have been launched that contain data that may be used to determine the suitability of a locale for a colony? It sounds like the scope is the general concept of Space Colonization without getting into the leadup to actually beginning a colony. I ask because that is one of my interests in the general topic of Exploration, and was wanting to develop a section for the project regarding current overall plans underway, and featuring specific technologies that are being developed that can be used for the furtherance of Colonization. --Exodio 15:26, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

I'd say that the caveat on robotic space exploration is there so as to prevent excessive overlap with other wikiprojects like Space Missions, Mars Spacecraft, and Space missions. Of course, being a member of this wikiproject doesn't prevent you from working on anything you like, and I think that what you're proposing is definitely appropriate here. siafu 15:36, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
Good to know. Thanks for taking the time - I'll be looking into those other projects too. --Exodio 01:44, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
That last one was Unmanned Space missions, not intentionally a repeat of Space Missions. I actually got the link right, just not the text. siafu 02:08, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
Yah - I noticed that. Seems like the whole Space topic could use some more organization. It can be tough to figure out what all is included. --Exodio 22:36, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

I've started the Space exploration WikiProject, but there's nothing there right now. My hope is that we will be able impliment the article assessment that's going on at the 1.0 editoral team, as they are trying to Work via Wikiprojects. Over 100 other wikiprojects are already following suit; the articles within the scope of this project could greatly benefit from being apart of this.. thoughts? article assessments

as some of you will have noticed, i've been tagging many article, under the broad topic of Space exploration, with the tag {{WP Space exploration}}. this banner has a built in assessment feature.. you can rate the articles quality (out of Stub/Start/B/GA/A/FA), and the importance (Low/Mid/High/Top). The quality has a pretty clear grading scheme, but the importance is much more subjective.

anyway, to do this, for example, add {{WP Space exploration|class=B|importance=Mid}} to the Talk page. the banner also has a link to a pretty bot generated list (update once a day, around 10am UTC) of all articles with the Space exploration tag. so feel free to help out, and tag and assess some articles. :) also, when rating an article, you may feel a desire to justify your rating; if so, a comment on the Talk page with the heading "Assessment" seems appropriate. Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 23:33, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

shortcut

should WP:SPACE not redirect to Wikipedia:WikiProject Space? i think i'll change it, if no one has any objection.. Mlm42 17:35, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

Hello, I just nominated the Olympus Mons article for the Article Creation and Improvement Drive because I think that that article deserves to be class A. I thought this nomination might be of some interest to you all. Thanks! S.dedalus 06:41, 18 November 2006 (UTC

Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 16:53, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

How do I join this group?--Conjoiner 13:20, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

Just add your name to the list on the project page. Richard001 07:26, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Terraforming Image

A note that the image: has been replaced with:

In most articles as per: Talk:Terraforming#Terraforming_Image

Since I'm not part of this group I cannot replace it here. So it's up to you guys.

Hi

Hi guys, I just joined this WikiProject... I am very interested in space colonization and I have a lot of background expertise in the subject... Is there anything I could work on or anything?

Userbox?

So though I've edited wikipedia before, started articles, etc. etc., I've never created a template. I was wondering if anybody thought either of these would be appropriate userboxes for this group? Or if we even need one? Bsimmons666 (talk) 16:14, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

Anybody? Bsimmons666 (talk) 15:40, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

Boy, I was actually looking for a userbox. I love the second one. I have already added it to my userpage. --Cool Piplup (talk) 01:24, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

See: Wikipedia:WikiProject_Space_Colonization#Userbox. Thanks Wronkiew! Bsimmons666 (talk) 17:26, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

Colonization of Titan

Should Colonization of Titan be merged with Colonization of the outer solar system at least for the time being?

  • Uniquely among the colonization entries, I think the one on Titan may be lacking in sources focusing specifically on it as opposed to the outer solar system in general. Thoughts? - Reaverdrop 05:16, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
  • I think it's a no brainer and should be done once the AfD process completes. I also think that the Asteroid section should be removed from Colonization of the outer solar system, since many asteroids are in the inner solar system. Also the outer edge of the asteroid belt pretty much marks the limit of where solar power power is practical, which is an important demarcation in terms of colonies. --agr 16:30, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
On second thought, I added some material to Colonization of Titan and it's several times longer than it was when it was nominated, and beginning to be referenced. It seems to have more supporting material than anywhere else in the outer solar system. Maybe it does not need to be merged after all... Thoughts? - Reaverdrop 22:06, 16 May 2006 (UTC)
I think that the article is great. Maybe it should be increased.... but it's still a good article.

Colonization of Venus

Hi - I decided yesterday that Colonization of Venus is going to be the next article I turn into an FA (assuming things all go well). Nothing sudden as making an FA usually takes a month or so, but I'll be working on it a lot so if anyone wants to help out with adding references or anything else they're more than welcome. I read that pdf by Geoffrey A. Landis two days ago and though I knew before about the temperature up at 50 km, I didn't realize that the pressure's the same as here nor that breathable air floats, and so I'm convinced that this idea needs to be put into the spotlight. Collaboration proposal

I would like to propose that we as a group improve one space colonization article a week. Together as a group, we have the ability to write some really nice articles that will educate people about space colonization. I think it would be a lot of fun to focus our efforts, work together, and see some big improvements in just one article at a time. A new page would be created where you can nominate an article for imprivement. Then, once a week one of these articles will be posted to the project page, and we start hacking away at it. Anyone else interested in such a project? Wronkiew (talk) 17:32, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

I went ahead and created the collaboration page. Wronkiew (talk) 18:33, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the invitation, but I'm really busy with other projects right now. Good luck! Chadlupkes (talk) 22:34, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks to all who participated in the first WikiProject Space Colonization collaboration! We made some minor improvements to the article over the course of a week. I know I was time-constrained due to the holidays, and I suspect others were as well. I'm ready for another collaboration, so I renominated the article for a merge project. Wronkiew (talk) 06:41, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

I've put together a banner ad for the project. Check it out and let me know what you think before I set it loose. Image:Qxz-ad157.gif Wronkiew (talk) 04:46, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

I hope you all liked the banner ad, because I added it to the rotation. You can add it to your user page with {{wikipedia ads|ad=157}}. Wronkiew (talk) 19:38, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

I like it :). Bsimmons666 (talk) Friend? 22:04, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
Saw this banner ad today at User_talk:Misza13. Cannot believe that it says "Mankind will conquer space and make it his home." 50% + of humanity much? (Wikipedia:Gender-neutral_language) (Yes, this essay is targetted at articles. The point still applies.) -- Writtenonsand (talk) 13:34, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

Content added to Space colonization

If someone needs a project, you could take a look at the new paragraph that was anonymously added to the space colonization article. It needs to be fact-checked, probably just to make sure that Earth Magazine exists and is a reliable source. Also it needs to be moved to Lunar outpost (NASA) or some other more appropriate article. Wronkiew (talk) 19:03, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Colonization of Jupiter

This article is unreferenced, very speculative, and essentially says that colonizing Jupiter is impossible. I attempted to improve it by merging in the more reasonable articles about its moons, but I see now that this was a mistake. My new plan for improving the Jovian articles involves deleting Colonization of Jupiter. If you think this is a bad idea, please comment on the article's talk page. Thanks. Wronkiew (talk) 07:00, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

I would say merge the article content into Colonization of the outer Solar System. Chadlupkes (talk) 14:26, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
Robert Zubrin is advocating exploration and settlement Jovian moons. I repeat my opinion here. I'd like to see Jovian moons in a separate article (Europa, Ganymede, Callisto), not merged with the rest of the outer Solar System. Efforts, technology, attitudes to Jovian vs e.g. Saturnian, Uranian, etc. are quite different. In my opinion, Jupiter's moons can be colonised long before Venus with less energy because of the abundance of volatiles, although with little solar energy (4% of Earth's level). The planned mission to Europa and Ganymede may affect the growth of the article. Anatoli (talk) 01:01, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
So how about an article on the uses and colonization of the Jupiter system (with subsections, of course)? The present article is a start in this direction, and although there seems no credible near-term prospect for actual crewed landing (? de-orbiting, or entry are perhaps more appropriate terms), or escape from Jupiter, even into low orbit, but still, because of its mass and the Oberth effect the planet still may be of significant use. Callisto and Ganymede appear potentially useful, and human outposts a few meters below the surface (for radiation shielding) may not even be out of the question for Io and Europa, if there is ever sufficient reason to land there. It seems to me the more distant outer planets are likely to lag a generation or more behind, if only because of the distances involved. So I would limit it to Jupiter's system for now. The other outer planets will deserve their own separate articles someday anyhow. But there could possibly be sub-stellar Jupiter-like objects with large satellites nearer than the closest known stars, and settlement of the Jupiter system might well provide a model for the ways we could utilize those. This would entail just a name change (and a redirect) for the current article, and we'd have a place to build. If this idea has any virtue, the talk page is no doubt the place to take it it. Wwheaton (talk) 06:35, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Project assessments

We do not currently assess articles pertaining to space colonization, nor do we really keep a list of articles that our WikiProject maintains. If we started doing so, we might find more editors who are interested in space colonization who haven't heard of this project. Also, it would help to direct our article improvement efforts towards the most important articles. I propose that our top-importance articles are:

Importance assessments are somewhat subjective, and we'll have to find some way to adapt the general guidelines for our purposes. We wouldn't need to worry about quality assessments. Anyone else interested in this idea? If we want to do it, the first step will be to get our project added to the WPSpace template. Wronkiew (talk) 04:29, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Habitability (Human) or Human Habitability

Hi! Another editor and I are working on a new article that would be involved with this Wikiproject. Right now our colonization articles are specific to particular planets and Planetary habitability has a more life-in-general focus. A similar article was redirected a while back and we're hoping to make it a little better this time. If anyone is interested, we'd appreciate any advice! --Explodicle (T/C) 15:20, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

This has been left alone too long, though it has grown some, it is in need of some finishing touches. Any help in closing the deal would be appreciated. Planetary habitability article has stolen some of what is in this new article to suggest that the topic is covered and for fear it would loose the aspect, but it never really had it as its main focus is Extremophile life forms. Besides it is really bloated and the encyclopedia would benefit from it's being split into two distinct articles. GabrielVelasquez (talk) 13:33, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Help wanted with ISS science article

A new article has been started, Research and Science on the International Space Station. It is curently only a very long, semi-organised list of referenced facilities and experiments. A lot of work will have to be done to turn it into a good article. If anyone is interested, go and have a look.--U5K0 (talk) 15:13, 21 March 2010 (UTC)

Reorganisation of space WikiProjects

There is a discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Space/2010 Reorganisation regarding the future of WikiProject Space and its child projects. The discussion is aimed at defining the roles of projects, and improving the activity and coordination of the projects. The input of members of this project is requested as it is one which may be affected by the issue. --GW 22:37, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

Abolition

It has been proposed that WikiProject Space Colonization be abolished as part of a reorganisation of spaceflight projects. Due to its narrow scope and limited number of active editors, the proposal calls for its functions to be subsumed by WPSpaceflight. Please see WT:SPACEFLIGHT for more details --GW/P 14:42, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
