Abi and Ryuden

Both won Sansho in their makuuchi debut - I assume we want to create these? Anyone working on them? --Pawnkingthree (talk) 15:13, 28 January 2018 (UTC)

Update: Abi now has an article. Ryūden is still a red link though.--Pawnkingthree (talk) 12:34, 27 March 2018 (UTC)

suggestion on the career record tables

There are currently 4 used colors in those tables: retirement, lower division, 2nd place, and winner. I suggest adding another one for the best rank up to that point, since for rikishi with long careers it is useful to see how long ago did that person was at his best, especially when that person never won a tournament. 79.116.217.141 (talk) 08:34, 3 February 2018 (UTC)

Abi

So I put up an Abi article, surprised no one beat me to it with all the attention around him. Take a look when you have minutes. If we follow the original criteria (which I might repost) the next best candidate with his juryo championship. FourTildes (talk) 05:00, 27 March 2018 (UTC)

Here's the link: Abi Masatora. Did you mean to suggest Daiamami as the next candidate? He's a red link in List of sumo tournament second division champions and we usually do juryo winners. (Although I noticed that Amakaze who I created after his juryo yusho is probably going to be demoted to makushita....)--Pawnkingthree (talk) 12:32, 27 March 2018 (UTC)
I looked over it briefly and just edited a few things to make it sound better. Popapop2 talk 22:25, 27 March 2018 (UTC)

Gyōji, dohyō, and the Shinpan

A few months ago I did a lot of research into gyōji, dohyō, and the shinpan so I'm going to be going over those articles very soon and adding in what I've found to help enhance them. I've already updated the gyōji article with what I've found. So those are my main sumo projects right now. Popapop2 talk 22:38, 27 March 2018 (UTC)

Nice work Popapop2. Much appreciated.--Pawnkingthree (talk) 14:09, 4 May 2018 (UTC)

Thanks! Always happy to help. Popapop2 talk 02:53, 4 May 2018 (UTC)

Cannabis

There's a nice new article on the 2008 cannabis scandal - courtesy of WikiProject Cannabis's 420 Collaboration.--Pawnkingthree (talk) 14:14, 4 May 2018 (UTC)

Harumafuji-Takanoiwa incident

The above entry does make me think that at some point we will need a separate article about the whole Harumafuji-Takanoiwa business. I was wondering what the title should be. Tigerboy1966  20:34, 11 June 2018 (UTC)

Hanakaze

As we have some recent articles on wrestlers notable (?) for things other than their success (Orora, Wakaichiro),I wonder if there is room for Hanakaze Daisaku, who has, I believe set a couple of longevity records (longest career, most basho). He is 48 now so it should not take too much updating. Tigerboy1966  13:18, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

We have Ichinoya Mitsuru so why not Hanakaze. It would be helpful though if there was some coverage of him in the Japanese press so we could have a secondary source too.--Pawnkingthree (talk) 23:34, 29 July 2018 (UTC)
The English language sources I found were blogs and forums (very well-informed admittedly). He might get a write-up on an RS site when he retires, which can't be too far away. Tigerboy1966  19:41, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

I would LOVE to have a Hanakaze article. He's the longest serving rikishi EVER. And the only one older than me. :) When he passed longest serving mark, I wanted to make the article, but I just didn't have the time or perhaps even more the inclination I used to. I can absolutely dig up a pic for it; I take one every time I see him. I see he has a ja wiki article. I often source my rikishi article from the Japanese sources. Actually, I feel like I should make the time for him. I will try to put up an article TOMORROW! Let me have this one if I may! FourTildes (talk) 10:59, 3 August 2018 (UTC)

If he has a ja wiki article that's a good indication of notability in my book. Go for it :) --Pawnkingthree (talk) 12:27, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
Hanakaze is largely finished. I did check thoroughly the veracity of his longest career ever, it took time and a huge excel sheet but he is the longest by a few years. Just need to source it, mostly from sumo reference. I found nothing about his younger years on my own in any language, and apparently the person who made his jawiki articles didn't either. I was amazed to discover I couldn't find a pic of him. I think I have been to quick to delete recently. I even found one of Hokutoryu but not him. I will get one in September. User:FourTildes/sandbox_3 FourTildes (talk) 00:36, 5 August 2018 (UTC)

I held off because I had no picture, and because sourcing is my least favorite wiki chore - but I just remembered him and figured I would get his article up and worry about the picture this coming September. Here he is, enjoy Hanakaze Daisaku FourTildes (talk) 10:24, 16 August 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for that FT. I love the fact that he began his career before his stablemaster did :)--Pawnkingthree (talk) 15:06, 16 August 2018 (UTC)

Daishoho

There's a recently created article on juryo rikishi Daishoho Kiyohiro that has been moved to draftspace at Draft:Daishoho Kiyohiro due to being undersourced. I'll work on it but if anyone can add some secondary sources (there must be some Japanese press coverage) that would be a great help. He has a good chance of making makuuchi after this tournament so notability is not a problem.-- Pawnkingthree (talk) 21:07, 9 January 2019 (UTC)

Meisei

I'm getting Meisei Chikara done and will post soon. Tigerboy1966  18:35, 23 March 2019 (UTC)

Yep, three kachi koshi in a row in makuuchi so he looks like he’s staying around. Pawnkingthree (talk) 21:03, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
Done. Just needs a pic. Tigerboy1966  16:14, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

Basho Articles

Is that acceptable, or would they just be deleted? I would like to help write them. Royal Autumn Crest (talk) 00:57, 28 April 2019 (UTC)

@Royal Autumn Crest: We don’t currently have any, but I am working on one in draft form: Draft:January 2018 Basho. I would suggest doing the same - then it can be worked on without fear of deletion. Pawnkingthree (talk) 12:29, 28 April 2019 (UTC)
I would love to help. I enjoy Sumo. I know they have articles in the Japanese Wikipedia on these topics as well. Haven't checked out your draft, you may be using that as a template. Royal Autumn Crest (talk) 13:38, 28 April 2019 (UTC)

Wakaichiro

Our page on Wakaichiro states that he was born in Houston, Texas, giving a citation that consists of an interview with the subject. However, he only says he was raised in Houston. Looking around online, I find no RS that gives this information, and though I did find one discussion board post that stated definitively that he was born in Japan, it was just the proverbial 'something I found on the internet'. This has BLP implications, and more trivially, affects in which section he is placed on the List of non-Japanese sumo wrestlers page. Agricolae (talk) 03:52, 13 May 2019 (UTC)

@Agricolae: I have never seen any source say that he was not born in Texas. All indications are that he was born there and listed Nagasaki as his shussin because of his Japanese nationality and to not take up a foreigner spot in his stable. I get that "from Texas" doesn't definitively mean "born in Texas" but the sources I've seen say his first experience of Japan was visiting an elementary school in Nagasaki during summer vacations and picking up a bit of Japanese eg [1].-- Pawnkingthree (talk) 15:27, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
Yeah, I get all that, but the post I saw said he was born in Japan then taken to Texas in infancy (though, again, it was just from some guy on the internet). We know he grew up in Texas, and we know he is listed with hometown of Nagasaki, but if we are going to definitively state his birthplace we really should have a source that says so directly rather than us trying to deduce it from hints and whispers - I would try dropping him a quick question on his Facebook page, but that would require me to sign up for Facebook, which is not going to happen. Agricolae (talk) 18:55, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
Heh. I just looked and it appears to be a private FB page - I would have to send him a friend request, and not sure I'll do that. His Twitter page is another option. Alternatively it may be better to just change the article to "grew up in Texas" until an RS proving it one way or the other turns up.-- Pawnkingthree (talk) 19:47, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
I had hoped John Gunning might have said something about it in one of the articles he has written on foreign and mixed-race wrestlers, but he only says Wakaichiro is from Texas. I think changing his page is in order unless a definitive statement turns up, but (and this is getting into the Wikipedia weeds a little bit) we would still need to list him as either US-born or 'Japanese-born of mixed parentage' on the List of non-Japanese sumo wrestlers page. Agricolae (talk) 20:54, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
I just asked the man himself. He said he was born in Houston. I figured there was a chance he was born in Nagasaki because Japanese women often go “home” to give birth, but this is not the case with Ichiro. FourTildes (talk) 08:39, 18 May 2019 (UTC)
OK. Better if we had an explicit ref, but at least it's right. Agricolae (talk) 12:19, 18 May 2019 (UTC)

New rikishi articles

I am creating a Shimanoumi Koyo article in sandbox as he is the highest ranked rikishi without an article. He only has 2 kk but he is likely to be in makuuchi for a while and is a 2 time juryo champion. Should be up by Monday. Tigerboy1966  16:16, 20 July 2019 (UTC)

posted but could do with a picture. I also had some problems with the refs from the Japanese wiki article so it's still a bit rough. Tigerboy1966  12:42, 21 July 2019 (UTC)
Thanks Tigerboy1966. I'll see if I can add any refs. Kaiouma has started Terutsuyoshi Shoki as well. (Now who's gonna do Enho?)-- Pawnkingthree (talk) 18:37, 22 July 2019 (UTC)
And of course Tomokaze. An unprecedented slew of special prizes for rikishi without articles. I'll start Tomokaze tomorrow once I'm through doing some updates on my "WP day job" which is horse-racing. Somewhat ironically, I have been working on an article about a British-bred racehorse name Japan. Regards. Tigerboy1966  18:56, 22 July 2019 (UTC)

I just finished Enhō, should've checked here first, but its seems I got lucky. Even if he is new to Makuuchi he certainly fits the category of popularity etc. FourTildes (talk) 07:11, 23 July 2019 (UTC)

Great job everyone. FourTildes I think Enho could be a Did You Know? candidate - would you have any objections if I nominated it?-- Pawnkingthree (talk) 14:35, 24 July 2019 (UTC)

Certainly. Thanks for thinking of it. :) FourTildes (talk) 20:17, 24 July 2019 (UTC)

Done - you can see it at Template:Did you know nominations/Enhō Akira.-- Pawnkingthree (talk) 15:59, 25 July 2019 (UTC)
