Invalid characters

Marking as Finished

Obviously, if its been saved, its "finished", but what about if its been ignored...?

Some cases, like no typo's fixed, it is finished. But what about like user ignore?

Where do I sign up?

I would really like to get involved in this, it sounds right up my alley. I have AWB but I have no idea what an SVN version is or how I'd get my hands on one. Just add your name to the list. Easiest way to get a SVN version, is to visit [1] and download the one with the largest number. Its included as a plugin, and will be included with future AWB release, but as with all plugins, its up to the individual user whether they want to use it. Same articles

I keep getting the same four articles at the top of the list every time I make one:

Also I think I broke something because now it won't upload my finished articles. It just says "Uploading 96 blah blah", and then doesn't do anything. Does it cache the stats when I close AWB? --Closedmouth (talk) 14:13, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
Yup, its a bit hard to cater for the redirects unfortunately (or at least, keep a track that they've changed), but it may be doable. As for the 2nd bit, theres been some changes to the frontend and backend code. Grab a newer svn snapshot to get the client side updates. —Reedy 15:49, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, didn't notice the new snapshot. Unfortunately it doesn't cache the stats, so I guess I've lost those 96 articles for good. You might want to look into some sort of caching procedure in case of a sudden loss of internet connection or some other bullshit like that. A way to submit those redirects manually would be good, too, although I'm sure you've thought of that already. Anyway, thanks for this, it's a brilliant idea and well executed, keeps me occupied for hours on end (although I wish people would mark intentional misspellings, how the fuck am I supposed to know Rasberry was spelt like that on purpose?? Making it save them accross sessions wouldnt be too difficult... Just for ease, could be added onto the normal settings file, and loaded/saved from there... We do need to do something about redirects anyway 17:34, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

great work so far

I was on holiday for the first two weeks in August and was very pleasantly surprised that in that time TypoScan has become an operational project. I thought it was just a pipe dream, perhaps there should be links/invitations to it from the WP:AWB/T pages. Well done to all those involved. I also posted to ask whether there is documentation on the Typos tab in AWB? I don't really understand how the typos appearing in 'on this page' are determined, and why there are so many with all no changes? And would it be possible to highlight the ones with changes as that's what needs to be checked in the article? Thanks Rjwilmsi 07:05, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

Funnily, we had a working project within 24 hours or so of Mboverload asking me about it on IRC... Then its just been developed and improved between Max and myself. Does need some bits fixing/tweaking/improving, and making multiproject, but other than that, it's pretty much there (Redirect handling would be a good addition). MaxSem has done something with the regex statistics. There isnt any documentation currently, but presumably there should be a few lines written up as to what it represents... —Reedy 17:11, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

Suggestions for improvements

Per my above comments, I'm very impressed so far with how the TypoScan project is progressing. However, I have a few suggestions for small improvements that could be made:

  • highlight rows where 'total' equals 'no change', as these are typo rules that need to be amended (maybe in colour, or by putting some sort of warning symbol alongside them)
    • This one isnt actually a typoscan item, its in core AWB. Colou?r would be easier than putting an icon, however, IIRC an icon can be easily added for the first col. Colour such as yellow would make sense? Seeing as yellow tends to mean warnings for things... On the current page rules, or the total? Or both?   • display a TypoScan timer to remind the user how long they have left to work on the articles they have 'checked out'

  • (if possible) display the typo rule name alongside the find expression, since some of the regex expressions don't easily identify what typo is being fixed

Thanks for the yellow highlighting. I got to see it on this edit even though the typo marked in yellow ("(?!\bEn(?:ban|barr?|bridge|mund)\b)\b(E|e)n(p[a-gijkm-z]|m[b-df-hj-np-z]|b[a-df-z])\B") was the one that made the change. I would prefer that the timer be in the about box. Otherwise people, esp OCD people like me, will feel pressured, like they are against the clock. It should only be displayed when a user specifically asks for it. --mboverload@ 22:51, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

No typo fixes 1428

Is this because dbscanner looks in wikimarkup and other places that AWB is smart enough not to? I can't understand how this number can be so high =0 --mboverload@ 22:56, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

Not very interesting

The TypoScan list is based on a database dump at least a month old now, so yes, many typos will have been fixed. There's a feature request to have AWB do some sort of pre-parsing mode whereby a second thread automatically removes articles based on the skip criteria. We will probably need this feature to make TypoScan a viable project. I suggest you vote for it on the AWB feature request page. Rjwilmsi 11:07, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Maintenance

TypoScan is offline for a bit whilst we move it from my hosting, to the WMF Toolserver under Max's account

Idea

slight bug

The article "d:tour 1997 Live at Southampton" causes AWB to go into an infinite loop due to it trying to pull up a dictionary link. To pull the article up, you have to use "d-tour 1997 Live at Southampton". So this any any similar articles should either be removed from the db or have their :s changed to -s. There's nothing we can do here. I could inform only two of the developers by e-mail because lead developer Reedy didn't enable his e-mail facility. Questions

I asked the following questions on Reedy's talk page, but didn't receive any response:

  • After processing several hundred articles using TypoScan, any idea why I'm not showing up on the list of users at tools:~awb/typoscan/?
  • Should the "Number of Never Checked Out Articles" in the Overview equal the "Number of Articles" less "Number of Ever Checked Out Articles"? (Right now it's 0).

Many times it doesn't save. Not sure why, I guess that after much time using AWB memory corruption occurs and then it cannot complete. I find that checking in small section of about 100 articles(then exit and restart AWB) is more effective then doing a thousand or so, small sections is also faster to check. Some recommendations

Some tips or recommendations to consider

  • Do maximize your screen viewing area. This speeds up your ability to make a decision.
  • Do become familiar with pre-parse mode (tools Options =>Use pre-parse mode), can save you much time and give you a chance to go make a coffee while still scanning.
  • Be aware and use where necessary {{Not a typo}} (or it's name sakes {{as written}}, {{Proper name}}, {{typo}}), and {{lang}}. Long term you don't want to go over false positives again and again, nor leave others with the same issue.
  • Do NOT use skip when 'Only white space is changed', it's tempting to think of white space as unimportant and ignore(I did for weeks), but for example life long → lifelong, none the less → nonetheless, closeby → close by, alongwith → along with, Robert DeNiro → Robert De Niro are white space changes encountered. Also currently about 20-25% are white space typos, numerically not to be stiffed at.
  • General fixes could be on or off, but realise it's slower to view changes when general fixes are on as scrolling can take a while, also infrequently you will encounter a general fix issue.
  • If your doing big runs, like 5000+ articles at a time, consider using two (or more) instances of AWB, one running pre-parse mode and the other you are manually checking and saving on.
  • Debug versions of AWB store in the folder you run AutoWikiBrowser.exe the files profiling.txt and log.txt. Delete those files periodically, perhaps daily as they slow down your typo checking.

TypoScan - How?

During 2012 all available articles known to TypoScan was complete and since then no one has been able to update with a new list of article with typos. Yes, I saw that. But I'm not doing something right. I selected Links on page(blue links only) then put Wikipedia:WikiProject TypoScan/Articles with typos 3 in the Links On field, then pressed Make List, and then Start. When you click start on the start tab an article will be processed. As you indicate green above I'm think you have pre-parsing on. That is a pre-check which will mark matches green. Right now you don't want to use it. It's a pre-check, for example to pre-check the articles you have listed match the criteria of having a typo, but in the case of Wikipedia:WikiProject TypoScan/Articles with typos 3 it's already been pre-checked(back in October 2012). When you check random articles where only 1 in 100 or so will have a typo then it's time efficient to pre-parse the list before you start or pre-parse it in sections as you go. Do you mean not highlight it as an error? In Options you can toggle 'Highlight errors' off and then nothing shows as an error(that it how I use it). Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 01:31, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

Articles with typos

While TypoScan is down. In AWB you can use "Source: Links on page(blue links only)" with Wikipedia:WikiProject_TypoScan/September_2012 to load them up. It's about 50,000 articles which all report a typo in AWB in the last 24 hours. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 03:00, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

Yes, that;'s what I did. Started with a list from before and re-checked it and added more based on new rules matched on a database dump. I have an update - let me repost more. TypoScan list problem

I cannot make a list by using the TypoScan plugin. Cannot get even a single article when I use both of the "TypoScan" and "TypoScan (500 pages)". Whereas all other lists can be obtained by using "New Pages", etc. Please help. Faizan 12:01, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

More manual typo lists

Since TypoScan still hasn't been restarted, I've taken a page from Sun Creator (t c)'s book (above) and downloaded the most recent dump (2014-05-02), using AWB's database scanner to match against the "typo" rule. The scan is about 28% done right now, and I've already found 25,000 articles which potentially have typos. The short answer is that manual typo lists are technically out-of-scope for this WikiProject, which is intended to support the automatic TypoScan software -- and I really don't feel like digging around to find a more appropriate project. :) I've given blanket permission in the text of the page for people to edit these supbages in my userspace, so it shouldn't be a problem.
Also, for reference, the scan is complete and there are approx. 73K articles to check. —Darkwind (talk) 02:56, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively.
