Naming conventions...

I really don't want to bring this up, but I also hate seeing cleanup tags on articles, so here goes... Earlier today User:SPUI added {{cleanup-name}} to everything in Category:Wisconsin state highways, as well as changing highway links to the Highway XX (Wisconsin) format (see [1] and [2] for examples). While I myself don't really care if it's Wisconsin State Highway 16, Wisconsin State Trunk Highway 16, or Highway 16 (Wisconsin), it would be nice if some standard for Wisconsin highways could be agreed upon. I don't mind either - and I'm also glad we're starting a WikiProject after I put together two of the articles to start with - but I'd suggest that the name in use (Wisconsin State Highway XX) is perfectly fine. jwhouk 14:32, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

The ball is rolling on it already. It would be foolish to stop now since the category has been revamped and updated. I suggest we go forward with the new proposal, but keep in mind that Parenthesis are bad characters for URLs. After posting this I followed BryanG's talk page to find the truth behind these cleanups - IMHO - the U.S. Roads WikiProject has already set the standard and it should be followed until a concensus decision is made. WiDOT uses the convention WIS XX on its website. The problem with a neologism is that not everyone uses the same description for something, especially when it's describing an item particular to a certain area or region. For example: drinking fountains are called "bubblers" in the state of Wisconsin, mostly due to the construction of the earliest versions located in the area. As long as there's a consensus, though, I'll defer to it. Amazing that there's all this fuss over a highway name. jwhouk 10:56, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

I don't see an immediate need for the others as of yet. There are at least two instances of state highways ending on county route junctions (WIS 24 at County L in Hales Corners and WIS 107 at County S near Tomahawk) Perhaps its best that any others are made by request only.? --master_sonLets talk 18:48, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Images Needed

While I don't want to join this WikiProject, I am available to take photographs. Let me know if you need any images in East Central or Northeast Wisconsin. What do you want pictures of? I have uploaded quite a few images of numerous cities in Northeastern and East Central Wisconsin. Do you want to use some of those images to represent the road that they were taken on too? I will be driving to Fox Valley Technical College daily from Chilton starting in 2 weeks. I'm going from Appleton to Oshkosh every Thursday (and going home through FDL), so I can easily do any picture at any point around Lake Winnebago. Please come up with a list, or add the image requests to Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Wisconsin.

I've been taking the pics as part of my Wisconsin Racetrack tour 2006. I've been to 12 tracks in 14 nights. I plan on getting to Francis Creek, Beaver Dam, Sturgeon Bay, and Slinger yet this month. I don't plan on traveling much around the state for vacation until after I graduate next May. I might take a weekend getaway or Sunday drive though.

WikiProject User Logo Question

Fort Howard military road

The text below is typed verbatim from the "Looking Back" page from the August 10, 2006 Chilton Times-Journal (page 7).

  • August 13, 1931 Plans for a centennial celebration at Sherwood next year to commemorate the opening of Highway 55, formerly the old Fort Howard military road, are already being discussed in that village. The paving of 55 is expected to be completed in about two weeks. It will require an additional two weeks to put the shoulders of the road in shape, after which it will be ready for traffic. The original road which connected Fort Howard, Fort Winnebago, and Fort Crawford at Praire du Chien, was opened as a result of an act of congress in 1832. It was built largely in this section, it is said, by soldiers of the Blackhawk War.

It looks like an article about the early military highway is in order sometime. Fort Howard was in Green Bay. Fort Winnebago is in Portage. Those articles talk about the road too. This text/article should affect several state highways. Here's a state website link: [3] This link also has sections for other roads from the early settlers era. Placing images

I added an image gallery to several articles, such as Highway 55 (Wisconsin) and Highway 114 (Wisconsin). Is this format acceptable? The images could be placed down the side, such as the New Holstein, Wisconsin article. This is the unabbreviated form of what is found on some road signs in the state. It is also the most popular use in the state and is the basis on the current convention based on Principle 2 (Highway XXX (Wisconsin))

Convention 2: <Wisconsin> State Highway XXX

This is a disambiguated form of "State Highway x" for Wisconsin. It seems to be rarely used though

Convention 3: <Wisconsin> State Trunk Highway XXX

"State Trunk Highway is the format that WISDOT uses in official documentation, many websites such as Chris Bessert's Wisconsin Highways use this format. This convention, however, is not very often used on road signs, writings or common dialogue.

Highway 103

East Terminus of Highway 103

I was googling to try to figure out why there was no Highway 103 (Wisconsin) article in Wikipedia, since I knew the location of the former eastern terminus. I noticed that our favorite source has nothing on the highway. I found out at this forum that there are numerous former state highways missing. All these highways were out of existence before 1997. The images that I took are all tagged CC Attribution ShareAlike, not public domain. They are free use. I uploaded them in the English Wikipedia only because I can't see how another language Wikipedia could possibly want to use the images. You can move them if you like. Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. I don't think that we are large enough to do any of what is proposed, especially departmentalizing. The whole assessment process turned me off at WikiProject NASCAR. Nearly all articles in this WikiProject assess as stub. I could run my AWB to flag them all as such if that is consensus. Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. more on the naming debate

I have added my input here. I don't want to come off as pompous or as attempting to forward my position as "better qualified and more logical" than the opinions already proffered, but I can't help but notice that none of the opinions proffered heretofore are based in WP policy, but solely upon personal preference. That's all well and good for agreement among the majority of primary editors involved, but the resolution is not even remotely in line with WP policy in this matter. I therefore request that interested editors either reconsider their "vote"s, or at the very least, that the relevant discussion be reöpened. Kindest regards, Tomertalk 07:10, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Here's the policy that I used to formulate my vote: "Generally, article naming should give priority to what the majority of English speakers would most easily recognize, with a reasonable minimum of ambiguity, while at the same time making linking to those articles easy and second nature." (pasted from WP:NC). My vote was based on what I believe is what the majority of speakers in Wisconsin would most easily recognize. I would not change even if I was given the opportunity. The change was implemented several months ago. You wouldn't believe the how difficult it was to do this process. Every step of the process was reviewed by a team of administrators to make sure that it was done properly. One of the top 10 contributors of all-time left the Wikipedia project over the discussion. Wisconsin Highway 183

I started this stub just now, but there are some things I'm not entirely certain of, and couldn't find online:

  1. Anything about its history.
  2. The year it was decommissioned.
  3. Verification of its northern terminus.

I know the highway was in existence in 1986, when I used to ride along it for 9 miles each way on the school bus, past the Little House Wayside, and found it on State Highway maps from the late 1980s but by the mid-'90s it's marked as "CC". I remember taking it to I-94 once, but I'm not certain whether it ended on US-10 or WIS-29, although I'm pretty sure it was the latter. The Wisconsin Highways page doesn't have an article on it [yet], much to my chagrin. Any help with this would be much appreciated. Tomertalk 03:47, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Oconomowoc Bypass and signage Designation

This is a question for the WP members about the new Oconomowoc Bypass, affecting WIS 16 and WIS 67. From what I understand, the bypass (which is mostly limited-access highway, but not completely) is labeled "BYPASS 16" for its length, but "WIS 67" for its section between the Northern leg of WIS 67 and the WIS 16 Freeway.

I'll admit, I'm stumped as to how to refer to this in the article on WIS 16 and/or WIS 67. Any feedback or ideas would be appreciated. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Jwhouk (talk • contribs) 05:41, 17 March 2007 (UTC).

Exit problem with Interstate 90 in Wisconsin article

The listing of exits seems to have contradictory information for Exit 3, and the distinction between Exit 3 and Exits 3A and 3B is unclear. Anyone in the La Crosse area can check this out and fix it? Tomertalk 08:29, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Unfortunately I live all the way across the state from La Crosse. I sure loving visiting the beautiful Mississippi River and the driftless areas. I remember taking the exit several times over the years, but I don't remember the details. The most recent was several years ago. None of my maps of La Crosse help with the details. I think that I figured it out. I was about to reply that it doesn't make sense to have exits 3, 3A, and 3B with 53 south being used at two of the exits. I bet that POV stands for Point of View, and that "West POV" stands for westbound (or eastbound). Then it makes sense if westbound and eastbound have different exit numbers (3 is say westbound and 3A/3B are eastbound). I think the term POV should be changed to westbound, eastbound, northbound, or southbound. Royalbroil T : C 02:20, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

Alternate sign

Without wanting to eclipse my above question, I'm wondering whether there's an "ALTERNATE" sign for interstates. As you can see from U.S. Route 53 in Wisconsin, I used the black-on-white "ALTERNATE" sign, but 12, 312 and 53 are labeled "ALTERNATE I-94" in the EC area using white-on-blue signs. A helps? I've seen alternate signs several times in my travels throughout Wisconsin. My guess was they were to be used if there needed to be a detour on the main road. The Eau Claire signs sound familiar. I assumed that you meant that you wanted it changed to the blue and white plate, so I changed it. Yellowstone Trail

I was speedy deleting the copyright-violating article for WikiProject Wisconsin. The author contested and claims to be the webmaster, so there's a good chance it will remain. Anyhow, I was reading the article and it claims that Wisconsin had the first numbered highway system in the WORLD. I found numerous sources that agreed while googling "Yellowstone Trail"! in the world in nation I am amazed that I have driven almost the entire route in Wisconsin! Reminder from USRD

In response to a few issues that came up, we are giving a reminder to all state highway wikiprojects and task forces:

  1. Each project needs to remain aware of developments at WT:USRD and subpages to ensure that each project is aware of decisions / discussions that affect that project. It is impossible to notify every single project about every single discussion that may affect it. Therefore, it is the state highway wikiproject's responsiblity to monitor discussions.
  2. If a project does not remain aware of such developments and complains later, then there is most likely nothing USRD can do about it.
  3. USRD, in most to nearly all cases, will not interfere with a properly functioning state highway wikiproject. All projects currently existing are "properly functioning" for the purposes mentioned here. All task forces currently existing are not "properly functioning" (that is why they are task forces). Departments of USRD (for example, MTF, shields, assessment, INNA) may have specific requirements for the state highway wikiprojects, but complaints regarding those need to be taken up with those departments.
  4. However, this is a reminder that USRD standards need to be followed by the state highway wikiprojects, regardless of the age of the wikiproject.

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. Article alerts

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Map

I have an official 1976 Wisconsin DOT road map that I'm keeping. It's useful to find out the where the defunct routes used to go, especially former routes numbered over 100. Let me know on my talk page if you want to know a route in 1976 or have a question. I've traveled many of the routes in the state. I'm still taking pictures of roads and Wisconsin downtowns; I'm continuing to add these pictures at Commons. I know that people don't want image galleries here on the English Wikipedia. Old maps/news sources

I'm looking for any help in re-citing the history sections in both U.S. Route 8 and U.S. Route 141 to remove all of the citations to Chris Bessert's Wisconsin Highways website. Does anyone know of a good place to find an archive of old maps? For US 8, I'm looking for a pre-1926 of WI that shows WIS 14 along the route of the current US 8, and maps or news articles about the now former BUS US 8 in Rhinelander and the Rhinelander Bypass from the 1990s.
