Disambiguation page for Ciudad Universitaria

Hola a todos! Since people seem to be shy, I'll start with something. Is it possible that somebody could create a disambiguation page for Ciudad Universitaria? (I don't know how to do it) That link takes you directly to the UNAM's main campus. Nothing wrong with the UNAM but we also have our own Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas( I started the article some time ago and I'm still working on it) which is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage and therefore, people should be able to find it fairly easy...Don't you think? Hola, Caracas. Here's an example of how to do a disambiguation page: Tourette. In this case, it would involve renaming and moving the contents of the original article, Ciudad Universitaria, using that page for the disambiguation which would direct towards the Mexico page and the Caracas page. Since there are only two pages to disambiguate, I'm not sure disambiguation is the best way to go ? Perhaps it would be better in this case to add a line to the top of the Ciudad Universitaria article, similar to the line at the top of Tourette syndrome, which refers people to Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas. I'll do that for now, but if you really want a disambiguation page, I think I know how to do it now. Sandy 14:50, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

Standardized naming conventions in Presidents

See Talk:List of Presidents of Venezuela. Shouldn't we change the presidential names in all lists and templates to either both surnames, or one surname ? They are inconsistent throughout the presidential lists. My suggestion is that the List of Presidents of Venezuela should contain both surnames for all presidents, while the template at the bottom of that page should contain only one surname, for brevity. Data for vote tally tables

I noticed that the vote tally tables used in several articles (like Hugo Chávez) are not referenced and sourced. I found the data for one of them, and included the reference in the template, Template:ChavezElections2000.   • For consistency, they should be in the same order

Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. New article and recognized content bots

If anyone is interested User:AlexNewArtBot is able to generate a list of new articles on a daily basis, which does make it easier to spot and tag new articles as well as find possible project participants who are already working on related material. Also, User:JL-Bot is available to automate the creation and maintenance of a recognized content page. Neither do I (although I'm working on it), but I think you might want to contact the bot operator for the new article bot. It looks like that one requires a list of regular expressions to work correctly. I've created Wikipedia:WikiProject Venezuela/Recognized content so the bot can run and people can take a look to see if they want it on a regular basis. I've added a Venezuela entry to NewArtBot; but the rules are a bit tricky (regexp) and need developing. They can be found here: User:AlexNewArtBot/Venezuela. The rules instructions are at User:AlexNewArtBot#Compile_the_rules. If it works, then the next time the bot runs, Wikipedia:WikiProject Venezuela/new articles should get content in it. Project tags

I'm finding numerous Venezuelan articles that don't have the talk page tagged with {{WP Venezuela}}, in case anyone wants to work on those. It would help to go through Category:Venezuela stubs to see if all talk pages have a Project template. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 22:05, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

WP:AutoWikiBrowser and the User:Kingbotk/Plugin allows somebody to knock out tagging those pages fairly quickly (assuming they have a windows computer). But you might want to consider a Wikipedia:Bot requests to have one of the project tagging bots go through a larger list or category of pages to tag more quickly and with less effort. Also, it is a bit odd to have both {{WikiProject Venezuela}} and {{WikiProject South America|venezuela=yes}} as tagging options. Looking at the other South American projects it might be better to look at centralizing more of the work at Wikipedia:WikiProject South America to not spread a limited number of participants so thin. I tagged five pages with the Venezuela tag, and noticed the line "is a new concept in communications" in ACN – Agencia Carabobeña de Noticias seems a bit overly promotional, but I'm not sure how to reword that. -Optigan13 (talk) 22:51, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
I've modified {{WikiProject Venezuela}} from Category:WikiProject Venezuela articles to Category:Venezuela articles which is what {{WikiProject South America|venezuela=yes}} was placing pages into, the Venezuela tag was on approximately 784 pages, and only 48 using the South America tag. It is a bit odd to me to have two different banners, and I think based on the number active participants here and the other South American projects, it might be better to merge this and the other projects as task forces of Southern California, but I'll leave that to the Venezuela project members to decide here. -Optigan13 (talk) 04:49, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

Sandy, this is now the 8th thread you've put here which is very article-specific. If the threads aren't really achieving more involvement with those articles, all it does is clutter this page. Project assessments

I've posted the WP 1.0 Assessment chart for Venezuela at the top of this page; WP Venezuela has over 500 unassessed articles, and many articles whose talk pages haven't been tagged with {{WP Venezuela}} (which should include the |class= and |importance= parameters), hence won't show up in the chart, which is fed by the Project tag. Rd, thanks for assessing some! It takes a while for the bot to update the assessment chart, but by looking at the categories at the bottom of the talk page, you can see assessment is assigning the article to the correct cat. Next, we need to get a bot on board to tag all of these articles with {{WP Venezuela}}. I don't speak bot, so hopefully someone will pick up on that. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 16:19, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Bot requests has lots of experience with that. Basically we need to collate a list of categories to tag, checking any subcats should be tagged too; see the last para of the intro at Wikipedia:Bot requests. We can collate a list below, with articles and categories in separate lists. Categories would be tagged, I guess, {{WP Venezuela|class=category}} and articles {{WP Venezuela|class=|importance=}}. Articles with stub templates can be automatically categorised stub class, so they would be given {{WP Venezuela|class=|auto=stub|importance=}}. Rd232 talk 00:23, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
Actually, we can probably save ourselves work by noticing that most relevant categories have "Venezuela" in the name. So a bot can go through Category:Venezuela recursively, and tag everything it finds in any subcategory with "Venezuela" in the name (and log any categories it finds that don't, for manual processing or checking for a second run). if that sounds OK I can put in a request. You can have them tag everything in the category, but having a list is better to make sure there's no unexpected issues with pages in categories that shouldn't be there. You should also let whichever them know if you have any criteria for auto-importance setting so you don't have to revisit the tagging for that issue, and the bot doesn't have to make two runs. I pulled a list of pages using WP:AWB recursed to two levels and posted it at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Venezuela/Assessment. There are 2,250 pages in there after removing duplicates. Take a look at that and see if there is anything that shouldn't be showing up in Venezuela categories. If it looks ok you can have a bot go through that list to tag and assess. I normally use AnomieBot, but he's on wikibreak, so you might want to try User:Xenobot Mk V (or the other two in Category:Autoassessment bots). The bot's page has a fairly straightforward description on what's needed, as well as a description for how to tag for quality at User:Xenobot Mk V/process, as well as a link there on how to provide importance settings if you wish. -Optigan13 (talk) 07:36, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

Categorisation

The recent tagging run has brought up the point that in quite a few cases there is overcategorisation (WP:OVERCAT) going on. There are many categories with a handful of members, and in some cases there are obvious omissions, and the problem can be fixed by creating articles. In other cases, the categories are just too specific and likely never to be satisfactorily filled. These categories should be emptied (member articles recategorised more broadly, if necessary creating the broader category), and the empty category then tagged {{db-empty}}. If in doubt about a particular case, discuss it here or at WP:VRNB. There's also a WikiProject Categories which might be appealed to for help. Rd232 talk 17:57, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. There were over 52,000 unreferenced BLPs in January 2010 and this has been reduced to 32,665 as of May 16. A bot is now running daily to compile a list of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.

Your Project's list can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Venezuela/Unreferenced BLPs. As of May 17 you have approximately 49 articles to be referenced, a 3.9% reduction from last week. [Sorry for being so late!] They're the ones found at Wikipedia:Citation_templates. They are handy, there are automated forms to use them (click "cite" in the top bar above the edit window), and User:Citation_bot can fill in full citations in this format based only on a doi or isbn. I can tell that this is not really getting too far, because not many people are actually getting involved. My opinion is that citation templates (I think that's the "wikipedia one")are kind of annoying (I don't actually know how to use them or many other templates yet.) I encourage, therefore, the adoption of MLA style. You can have Son of Citation Machine format it for you very easily and quickly and then paste it into the ref's. The site has other styles like APA but all that matters is a uniform standard and User:Rd232 has stated that "any common standard is fine really." So if anyone vehemently disagrees comment on this talk page. And soon. I would like to format the cites according to some standard soon, because there are a lot of them. Since no one has opposed anything commented here. I believe that the time has come to overhaul the references on Chavez. I will begin to reformat ALL the citations to a new standard.   • As I pointed out on the talk page, I prefer templates because they can be parsed by automated computer tools, they are simpler to use, they automatically deal with all of the punctuation/formatting/etc. so that people don't have to learn this themselves. The only argument I've heard against them is that they are "complicated", which is untrue. They are actually simpler than doing proper citations manually. You don't have to learn all of the rules for formatting, punctuation, etc. -- you just put the title in the title= field, the author in the author= field, etc. ... what is complicated about that? If people can include a link and fill out an article issue template, then citation templates aren't any more difficult than those. Anyhow, that's my 2 cents on the matter. Personally I don't care if somebody wants to go through and convert them all, but I plan to continue using citation templates, unless I am forced to stop, because I don't feel like having to deal with all of the formatting manually. -- Jrtayloriv (talk) 03:47, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
    • You may be used to them, but they are not "simpler to use"; and what's complicated about them is you need to know the fieldnames, plus the result is much harder to scan and looks offputtingly like programming source code. They make wikitext much harder to read, especially if there are a lot - check out this old version of Taner Akcam - try editing the second section!! You'll see why it took me two hours to convert to list-defined references which at least hides the hard-to-read mess at the end of the article. The "you don't need to learn the rules" argument doesn't hold water - it's easy enough to follow existing styles, within the article or without; whilst you do need to learn the fieldnames! They also create a harmful sense of "this must be stylistically exactly right" which puts potential editors off. Consistency of style is vastly over-rated anyway (as long as the info is there, who cares?). We have much more important problems than consistency of style, notably keeping articles up-to-date: and citation templates make articles less likely to be updated because they undoubtedly put casual editors off editing because after clicking on Edit the wikitext is that much scarier and harder to read. In sum, I think citation templates are actively harmful and should be discouraged wherever possible. Rd232 talk 08:48, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

  • I offer up my own style (called "Schwindt Style") to be used for the article. To see how cites would be formatted please see User:Schwindtd under section titled Citation Style I Use. Let me know how this cite style feels. It basically combines MLA and citation templates and it isn't too difficult. And it looks very handsome, if I say so myself. "Boy with leaking boot" statue in Caracas?

Hallo, in the article The Boy with the Leaking Boot it's mentioned (with a source[3]) that there is a statue of this type in Caracas. Does anyone know anything about it? Can you point me to any source, image, further information? I'm trying to get the article to Good Article status and would like to expand on this, one of the minority of non-USA statues. Thanks for this feedback. As suggested, I'm using more recent versions of some articles, such as this, this and this. Interestingly, although these articles are plastered with cleanup/POV tags, the only part flagged by WikiTrust as dubious is the lede of the Chávez article - the rest were ranked as "very trustworthy".
There were also three articles proposed for inclusion.
  • The Revolution Will Not Be Televised (film) has been included because it scores pretty high, so no problem.
  • Venezuelan presidential election, 1998 is an interesting article, and it provides interesting background, but currently the external interest data are way too low (e.g. average 41 hits/day). If the article were substantially improved, we might be able to make a good case, though.
  • Presidency of Hugo Chávez is the article for which I would like to solicit feedback. The article has a cleanup tag, but Rd232 suggests, that it "presents recent issues much better than Hugo Chavez does; not perfect, but does a decent job of covering most things that need covering in an adequate way." If others from the project concur with this analysis, I'll include it. I tend to tread carefully when handling such sensitive topics! Please let me know about this one.

No, it's not too late at all - I'm swamped with reviewing and still have a few more days of it to go. Rd232 is right about this article being too important to exclude; if we omitted it, while including the leader of every other significant nation in the world, we at the 1.0 Project would be accused of bias. This article is nearly nine years old, and it is read by about one million people a year online in its current state (many more than will read it offline!). I think it just needs a good old-fashioned collaborative cleanup! (I see that people here have already worked on it.) If you can fix the worst aspects of it by next week, we can at least have a half-decent version for the DVD - we'd really appreciate that. Thanks for the clarification, Wlkerma. Although, I must respectfully disagree with some of your assessment regarding the Chavez article. There may be many, many visitors to the page, but there are consistently only about 8 people (and, really only 5 or 6 of whom are active) editing the page. We have been as a stand still for months, with an inability to reach a consensus regarding some substantial allegations of bias (allegations which I, obviously, feel are entirely warranted.) It is extremely unlikely this page will be corrected within the next week. In fact, it's unlikely the page will be corrected at all until more editors assist in making the page objective. I understand not wanting to exclude the page, given that the other world leaders are all included. However, I do hope that the offline page will include the tags explaining the dispute regarding the neutrality of the page. Yes, it's quite odd how the relative handful of editors with a real interest in Venezuela manage to neither collaborate effectively nor get much done individually (yours truly being a notable exception for the latter case). With rare exceptions (typically driven by news events) it's fairly unproductive moaning, without use of tools like WP:DR or subpage drafts. Mostly nothing much happens unless somebody tries to fix a tagged problem, when somebody will turn up to complain the problem isn't fixed and so the tag should stay - but make no attempt to fix it. Would anyone be opposed to adding WP:VEN to the Popular pages project? This will cause a list of the most popular (based on pageview statistics) pages within the scope of the project to be created monthly. Venezuelan ministries

Hi! I noticed there was a Ministry of the Popular Power for the Public Works and Dwellings (Ministerio del Poder Popular para las Obras Públicas y Vivienda)

But now there is a Ministerio del Poder Popular para Transporte y Comunicaciones

Conviasa was subservient to the former, and is now to the latter (see http://www.mtc.gob.ve/organismos , where it is listed).

Venezuela and the Millennium Development Goals

I plan on contributing a section to the Venezuela Wikipedia page. The section I would add would focus on Venezuela's progress on the Millennium Development Goals. Venezuela continues to be one of the most talked about nations because of its president Hugo Chavez and his political views. In an effort to meet the Millennium Development Goals, President Chavez and the Venezuelan government have implemented a number of social programs, many of which have been successful. Even though many international actors have criticized Venezuela's "socialist" policies, the country has actually been experiencing progress in relation to the Millennium Development Goals. The article contribution would evaluate the country's progress on all eight of the goals. In fact, if progress is evident in Venezuela, it will serve as a model country, a beacon of hope, for other developing and developed nations. Since this article contribution specifically relates to Venezuela, I would like to add my article contribution to the project. This WikiProject will allow my page to be more accountable to Venezuelan economic policy and politics. In addition, I appreciate all feedback on the article topic and the article itself. It is necessary to look at an individual country's progress on the Millennium Development Goals in order to evaluate the global initiative on the whole.   4. Spelling between Iberian and American varieties of Spanish?
  5. How to treat Quechua (Runa Simi) and other articles?
  6. and so on?

Socialism of the 21st century and Bolivarianism

Hi folks, it appears to me that Socialism of the 21st century is just another term for Bolivarianism, even if it wasn't necessarily coined that way. Is this a complete misunderstanding, or might a merge be appropriate? Thanks, BDD (talk) 20:22, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

It may seem synonymous in present-day Venezuela, but if you look at the Bolivarianism article, not only does Bolivarianism have a much longer history, but it's not necessarily socialist. Rd232 talk 21:21, 16 August 2012 (UTC)
Perhaps this is why it's tagged as misleading. The Components section suggests it's all about Chavez. There's the section on Pan-Americanism, but the {{main}} there implies that it's a separate doctrine. Simon Bolivar (Tadolina)

I started an article for this sculpture, one copy of which is located in Venezuela. However, I am having difficulty finding much information about the cast in Venezuela, possibly because I do not speak Spanish but also possibly because the artist's last name might have alternative spellings (hard for me to tell). Might any WikiProject Venezuela participants be able to assist with the expansion of this article, perhaps by adding sources in English or Spanish? Any help would be appreciated. Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.
