Use of term "British Isles"[edit]
I'm going to voice the same hesitation that I did with the 10,000 challenge. People from the Republic of Ireland do not use the term "British Isles", and see it as politically fraught and exclusionary. In the end, the 10,000 Challenge moved from that terminology to "Great Britain and Ireland". I'd hope you would consider doing the same here. Smirkybec (talk) 14:23, 18 December 2017 (UTC)
- I guess you know that the island of Ireland is one of the British Isles as is mainland Britain..... but I'll be bold @Ipigott: and change it. (Even though it will exclude the Isle of Man etc) Victuallers (talk) 17:10, 18 December 2017 (UTC)
- Victuallers: I'm not sure what you've changed. Several invitations have already been sent out. There's an editathon page, etc., and I've also called for Irish participation. - Hi Ian, I've only changed the title on the project page. Your idea is another good compromise. On twitter everyone seems to be agreed that they are included BUT they think "others" misunderstand "British Isles" as a political (and not geographic) area. "British Isles including Ireland" seems good to me, (but so did "British Isles"). I dont think we have made a mistake - but perceptions matter. Victuallers (talk) 17:27, 18 December 2017 (UTC)
- I will admit it is a localised sensitivity, but one that is felt very strongly in Ireland! So much so, there is even an article on it, but the most pertinent quote from the top: "the name British Isles is avoided in Hiberno-English as such usage could be construed to imply continued territorial claims or political overlordship of the Republic of Ireland by the United Kingdom". Simply put, the use of British tends to read as exclusionary of ROI by those in ROI, even if it is not intended. Given that Ireland could do with the attention, and to bring along ROI editors, a rewording is very much welcome. Smirkybec (talk) 18:24, 18 December 2017 (UTC)
- Now that I've had time to read all the background information, I think Great Britain and Ireland is probably the best compromise, although some might wonder whether Northern Ireland is covered. A doubt regarding a sportsperson[edit]
I recently created an article related to a cricketer, Alice Stanton (cricketer) who was born in 1960 and has played in 3 Women's ODIs. I also noticed that there was another person with this same name who is a Professor whose country is also Ireland and from Dublin. I found a source which was the only source that confused me. The source which was released in 2017 stated that the Professor, Alice Stanton has come forward to support Cricket Ireland and the women's cricket in Ireland. http://www.cricketireland.ie/news/article/agri-technology-company-devenish-team-up-with-cricket-ireland I wanted to know whether the cricketer later went onto become a Professor after retiring from international cricket.
