The fourteenth convocation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia (Serbian: Четрнаести сазив Народне скупштине Републике Србије, romanizedČetrnaesti saziv Narodne skupštine Republike Srbije) is the ongoing convocation of the National Assembly of Serbia. It was constituted in the House of the National Assembly on 6 February 2024.

In the 2023 parliamentary election, the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS)-led electoral alliance re-gained its parliamentary majority, winning 129 seats in total. The second placed was the Serbia Against Violence coalition, which won 65 seats. The Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) electoral alliance suffered major losses, only winning 18 seats in total. Ana Brnabić of SNS was elected president of the National Assembly on 20 March. On 2 May, the National Assembly elected the cabinet of Miloš Vučević.

Background[edit]

Parliamentary elections in Serbia were held on 17 December 2023.[1] The election resulted in a victory of the Serbia Must Not Stop electoral alliance led by the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), winning 129 seats.[2] The second placed was the Serbia Against Violence coalition, which won 65 seats.[2] The electoral alliance of the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) collapsed and only won 18 seats, this being its worst result since the 2007 parliamentary election.[2]

Leadership[edit]

The leadership of the fourteenth convocation was elected during its constitutive session on 20 March.[3] Ana Brnabić of SNS was elected president of the National Assembly, while Sandra Božić of SNS, Marina Raguš of SNS, Snežana Paunović of SPS, Elvira Kovács of Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians, Edin Đerlek of Justice and Reconciliation Party, and Jovan Janjić of We – Voice from the People were elected vice-presidents.[4] Srđan Smiljanić, an independent politician, was elected general secretary.[4]

Božić unexpectedly resigned from her positions in the National Assembly on 7 May.[5][6] A day later, the Assembly of Vojvodina elected a new government, in which Božić was choosen as vice president of the government of Vojvodina.[7]

Timeline[edit]

The fourteenth convocation started its constitutive session on 6 February 2024, at which the mandates of the elected members of the National Assembly were confirmed.[9] It continued on 18 March and lasted until 20 March.[10] During the constitutive session, the president of the National Assembly, vice-presidents of the National Assembly, general secretary of the National Assembly, and members of working bodies of the National Assembly were elected.[3][9] Members of permanent parliamentary delegations in international institutions were also elected.[3][9]

After Miloš Vučević was given the mandate to form a government by Aleksandar Vučić, the president of Serbia, the National Assembly elected him and his cabinet at a special session on 2 May.[11]

Legislation[edit]

The law on local elections was amended on 23 April under an urgent procedure.[12] 165 voted in favour, while 26 voted against.[13] A month later, the law on the unified electoral roll was also amended, with 153 votes in favour.[14][15]
