  • 27 February - Betty Pettersson is accepted as a student at the Uppsala university, and thereby becomes the first female university student in Sweden.[1]
  • - Women are granted unlimited right to choose marriage partner without the need of any permission from her family, and arranged marriages are thereby banned (women of the nobility, however, are not granted the same right until 1882).[2]
  • - Folk schools are given state support.[3]
  • - Linköping Central Station is completed
  • 18 September - King Charles XV dies. Having no sons, he's succeeded by his brother Oscar II
