The 1972 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships were held at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York. Organized by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), the competition took place on February 25 and served as the national championships in indoor track and field for the United States.[1]

The meeting was used to select the U.S. team for a dual meet against the Soviet Union to be held in Richmond, Virginia on March 17. At the championships, Byron Dyce of Jamaica became the first black person to win a mile run final at Madison Square Garden.[2]
