On June 21, 2024, four people were killed and nine others injured in a mass shooting at the Mad Butcher supermarket in Fordyce, Arkansas, United States.[2]

Shooting[edit]

At 11:38 a.m. CDT, police received calls about an active shooter at the Mad Butcher supermarket. The shooting, carried out by a lone wolf, began in the supermarket's parking lot, close to U.S Route 79.[3] After firing at people in the parking lot, the shooter, Travis Posey, then moved inside the grocery store where he fired upon customers and employees. When five law enforcement officers arrived at the scene from the Dallas County Sheriff's Office and Fordyce Police Department, Posey exited the store and engaged in a shoot-out with officers in the parking lot.[4]

Two officers suffered non-life threatening injuries during the ensuing shootout, and the suspect was grazed in the head. He was critically injured, but was also in a non-life threatening condition. The suspect was taken into custody after less than five minutes.[5][3][4] The shooter shot 13 people, killing four and wounding nine, whose injuries ranged from non-life threatening to critical.[5] The fourth fatality died on the day after the shooting.[5]

Accused[edit]

The Ouachita County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as 44-year-old Travis Eugene "Joey" Posey (born 1979) of neighboring New Edinburg, Arkansas.[6] At the time of the shooting, Posey was the owner of a Kingsland landscaping company who operated it since 2010[7] as well as a local trucking service. Earlier records show that Posey attended the University of Arkansas at Monticello in 1997.[8]

Posey was once arrested by the New York State Police and charged with a single fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon charge near Watertown, New York, on November 14, 2011, after attempting to bring a weapon through the gates of Fort Drum, pleading guilty to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct and was released on a $200 fine. Police confiscated the gun, which was not registered in New York.[9]

Victims[edit]

The first victim announced was 23-year-old Callie Weems of New Edinburg, Arkansas. She was shot while rendering aid to another victim inside the Mad Butcher.[5]

The remaining two victims who died on the day of the shooting were identified as 63-year-old Shirley Taylor and 81-year-old Ellen Shrum. The following day it was announced that 50-year-old Roy Sturgis died from injuries sustained. Sturgis was noted as having run into the Mad Butcher to help while he was shopping at a neighboring store.[10][11]
