As of August 28, 2024, 9 people in the United States have died and 57 have been hospitalized from a listeriosis outbreak linked to sliced deli meat; it is reported to have been connected to contaminated products sold by Boar's Head.[1][2][3] The outbreak is believed to have started with products produced in June 2024[1] and was first reported in July.[4]

In interviews with sick people, 23 of 24 (96%) reported eating meats sliced at deli counters. Thirteen people reported eating deli-sliced liverwurst, with seven of those reporting the Boar's Head brand. An unopened Boar's Head liverwurst product (at an unspecified location) tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. Testing is ongoing to determine if the listeria in the liverwurst is the same as the ill people. Investigators are working to determine if other deli meat products are affected.[1][5]

On July 30, 2024, Boar's Head issued a recall for seven million pounds of meat prepared at the company's plant in Jarratt, Virginia.[4][6] Inspectors from the United States Department of Agriculture had logged 69 regulatory violations during inspections of the plant between August 2023 and August 2024, with officials observing black mold, mildew, insects, blood pooling on the floor, and foul odors.[7][8]

Aftermath

[edit]

On September 3, 2024, a wrongful death lawsuit was filed against Boar's Head by the family of a deceased 88-year-old man which alleges is a direct result of Boar's Head contaminated deli meat consumption.[9]

By September 6, 2024, at least seven lawsuits, including three class action, were filed against Boar's Head following the listeria outbreak alleging breach of warranty, failing to disclose a potential risk of bacterial contamination, false advertising, manufacturing defects, misleading the public, negligence, violations of Alabama's product liability law, and wrongful death.[10]
