The 44th Separate Mechanized Brigade (Ukrainian: 44 окрема механізована бригада) is a brigade of the Ukrainian Ground Forces formed in 2023.[1]

History

The brigade was formed on 2 March 2023. It was one of the Ukrainian brigades trained in Poland.[2] The brigade has been assigned the military number A4723, and at least one battalion is equipped with Polish-donated BMP-1s.[3] It is also receiving the German-made Leopard 1A5.[4]

The brigade entered its first combat mission in the Bakhmut area, where on 9 August 2023, the commander of the 3rd Battalion, Major Oleksij Šedul'ko, was killed.[5] In September it was transferred north, together with the 42nd Mechanized Brigade to reinforce Ukrainian defenses in the Kupiansk region. During 2024 it continues to fight on the front in Luhansk.[6]
