Kaita was elected to the National Assembly to represent Kusada/Ingawa/Kankia federal constituency where he served till 2018 when he contested in the bye-election for Katsina North Senatorial District following the death of Senator Mustapha Bukar representing the district. Kaita won the nomination of All Progressives Congress, APC after defeating 10 other contestants. He went on to win the general election held on 11 August 2018, with 224,607 votes to defeat his older brother and the candidate of People's Democratic Party, PDP Kabir Baba-Kaita who scored 59,724 votes. He was sworn into the 8th Senate by Bukola Saraki, the president of the Senate on 10 October 2018.[2]

Baba-Kaita won reelection to the Senate in 2019 after polling 339, 438 votes to defeat candidates of PDP Mani Nassarawa who scored 127,529 votes and Accord Party Lawal Nalado who scored 14,152 votes.[3] Baba-kaita was the chairman of Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and Tertiary Education Trust Fund, (TETFund) in the 9th Senate.[4][5] Baba-Kaita, the senator for incumbent president Muhammadu Buhari's senatorial district criticised the performance of the president at plenaries of the senate particularly on rising insecurity in the north.[6][7][8] In April 2022, Baba-Kaita announced his resignation from APC and joined PDP[9] where he ran for a return ticket to the Senate but lost to the candidate of APC Nasir Zangon-Daura. Baba-Kaita polled 163,586 votes to place second to the winner, Nasir Zangon-Daura who scored 174,062 votes. During the election, Baba-Kaita campaigned for Atiku Abubakar, candidate of PDP to retain presidency in the North against the zoning to the South after eight years of President Buhari from the North.[citation needed]
