Ario Anindito is an Indonesian comic book writer, illustrator, inker and art director who has contributed to DC Comics[2] and Marvel Comics.[3]

His best-known contributions are as an illustrator and inker for Star Wars: The High Republic comic series.[4]

Early life[edit]

Ario Anindito was born in Bandung on September 30, 1984, his parents took inspiration of his name from the stories of Satria Pinandita which in separate meaning is ksatria (knights) and pandita (priest) which combine means to have the courage of a knights and the wisdom of a priest.[5]

He is an avid comic book reader and admirer, he starts interested in comic book since the age of six. In 2002 he took studies for Architecture at Universitas Katolik Parahyangan in Bandung.[6] His interest in comic books were shown when the final exam for his studies was about the design of a comic book museum.[citation needed]

Career[edit]

After graduating from the university in 2007, Ario did not continue with architecture. Instead, he followed his dream to become a comic book artist.[7]

He started to work as a freelance illustrator and publish his works in several art websites. In 2008 he also published his first ever comic book titled Nadya and the Painkillers through a comic compile magazine published by an indie publisher called Sparx the Compendium[8]

In 2009 he is hired as a concept artist during the production of Drupadi an Indonesian movie based on the Mahabharata folklore produced by Sinemart, an Indonesian film production house.[9]

In 2010 he became a freelance art director in DraftFCB Indonesia, where he became an art director for several Indonesian television commercials, one of his commercial brought him the Gold Award for animation category in the event of Citra Pariwara 2011.[10]

In 2012, he was hired as an art director for the production of an Indonesian comedy-drama movie titled "Finding Srimulat". His works in this movie nominates him as one of the best art directors during 2012 Piala Maya.[11]

DC Comics[edit]

During 2010, he was approached by an Italian talent scout agency Tomato[12] (who later became his manager), whose interested for Ario's works and in 2012 give Ario the opportunities to join DC Comics projects as the illustrator for the Red Hood and the Outlaws comic book series.[13][14]

Marvel comics[edit]

After working for DC Comics for 2 years, his contribution were heard by Marvel Comics and offer him to join through selective recruitments.[citation needed] In 2014 he finally move to Marvel Comics as a penciller where his task is to transfer script into the visual of comic book panel.[15]

Some of his works in Marvel Comics as an illustrator and inker are “Wolverines”, “Secret Wars: House of M”, “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”, “Venom”, “X-Men: Extermination”, and “Secret Empire: United”.

His most notable works are “Star Wars the High Republic series”, together with Cavan Scott he was the co-creator and also the illustrator for the series.[16] The series noted for one of the best selling comic book series, for which the first edition were sold 200 thousand copies.[17]

Collectibles[edit]

He also joins XM Studio, a high-end collectibles company based in Singapore, where he designs collectible statue figures for characters from both DC Comics and Marvel Comics.

One of his works with XM Studio were the collectible statue of Batman which called Batman rebirth statue.[18][19] This also marked Ario as the first Indonesian artist to design an officially licensed Batman statue from DC Comics to be marketed internationally.[citation needed]

He also working several concept for television commercials for Indonesian local brand and international brand for Dentsu Indonesia and Drawing Squad advertising agency, he also works as a novel and book illustrator for Kepustakaan Populer Gramedia,[20] and also book and magazine illustrator for several others printing companies.

Personal ventures[edit]

He own a small art studio in his hometown of Bandung, which he called Stonefruit Studio a refer to the area name of his neighborhood in Bandung which in Indonesian called Buah Batu or if translated to English literally is Stone Fruit.[25][26]
