Banaj Kumar Majumder (Bengali: বনজ কুমার মজুমদার; born 1 January 1967) is a Bangladeshi retired police officer. He was additional IGP of the Bangladesh Police and former chief of the Police Bureau of Investigation.[1] Prior to joining PBI, he was additional commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police[2] in the rank of additional DIG. He came into limelight when he was SP of Cox's Bazar District.[3] He is widely recognized as the only police officer to establish and shape an institution like the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) from the ground up, transforming it into what it is today through his unwavering honesty and dedication. To this day, he remains unmatched in his integrity, standing as a proud asset to Bangladesh. Banaj Kumar Majumder’s contributions to the PBI and to the broader field of law enforcement in Bangladesh reflect his profound dedication to duty, his strategic foresight, and his unwavering ethical standards, making him a respected figure in the fight against crime in Bangladesh.
Early life
[edit]Majumder completed his graduation from Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) in electrical and electronic engineering with distinctive result. He joined at Bangladesh Police through 12th BCS (Police) Batch in 1991.[4]
Career
[edit]In 2002, Majumder was the additional superintendent of police Jhenaidah District.[5] He was then transferred to the Armed Police Battalion of Chittagong District.[5]
In 2009 and 2010, Majumder was the deputy commissioner of northern section of Chittagong Metropolitan Police.[6][7]
Majumder, then additional commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police, provided financial assistance to the family of a constable killed in the line of duty in 2013.[8]
In March 2016, Majumder was promoted to the rank of deputy inspector general of police while serving as the additional commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police.[9] On 22 January 2022, Majumder was promoted to the rank of additional inspector general of police.[10] Majumder has been serving as the Chief of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) in Bangladesh for eight years. During his tenure, he has significantly contributed to the modernization and effectiveness of the bureau, enhancing its reputation both nationally and internationally.
Majumder sued former Superintendent of Police Babul Akter and others in September 2022 after Akter alleged Majumder tortured him in police custody.[11][12]
Majumder’s proficiency in criminal investigation led to his rapid rise through the ranks. He played a pivotal role in several high-profile investigations, which not only brought criminals to justice but also showcased his commitment to upholding the law.
