Cap Rock is an unincorporated community in Crosby County, Texas, United States.[1] According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 25 in 2000. It is located within the Lubbock metropolitan area.

History[edit]

The Cap Rock area was established in 1925 when land was broken up for farming and ranching. C.H. Graham, Lawrence Teston, and John Wheeler were among the first settlers in the community; Teston was the first storeowner, while Wheeler gave land for a gin to be built on. The area was still visible on county maps in 1990 and had a population of 25 in 2000.[2]

Geography[edit]

Cap Rock is located on Texas State Highway 207 at the edge of the Caprock on the Salt Fork Brazos River, 27 mi (43 km) east of Lubbock in Crosby County.[2]

Education[edit]

The Cap Rock school district, formerly known as Plum Creek School, was founded on March 8, 1929, and was placed under the control of the Robertson school system. Estelle Griffin was the first teacher in a one-room building that housed students in grades one through seven. Up until August 23, 1960, when the district was combined with the Ralls Independent School District, there was a grade school at Cap Rock. C.H. Graham was given a land grant for the school.[2]
