Appearance
Unlike the Lutheran Church in Sweden and Finland (which maintain the office of archbishop as the leaders of their churches), the Church of Norway has instead maintained the office of Praeces (Moderator) since the beginning of the 20th century, who presides at the Bishops' Conference. The Bishop of Oslo held this position every year until 1998. Beginning in 1998 the Praeces has been elected among other Norwegian Bishops, too, each for a four year term. The role of Praeces can best be described as Primus inter pares (Latin) or "First among equals."
