The Tatton family was a branch of the Egerton family, descended in the female line from the Hon. Thomas Egerton, the youngest son of John Egerton, 2nd Earl of Bridgewater. His granddaughter Hester (died 1780) married William Tatton, and in 1780 they assumed by Royal licence the surname of Egerton in lieu of Tatton. The family seat was Tatton Park in Cheshire.
