September 2006[edit]

Ah, looks like someone finally created these AfD categories. The page claims the categories are not active yet. In what sense are they not active? They exist, articles are in them. Is this all being created as someone's decision to Be Bold, or per some consensus reached somewhere? --Xyzzyplugh 04:45, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

They're active now. Consensus is at WP:ElC. --ais523 12:59, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
  • I think this category feature is great. I have been moving items into the appropriate categories. I am not sure where is the best place to raise this, but could an additional category be created for langunage. I have been putting those entries that deal with WP:NEO and dictionary definitions into the Society topics because nothing else fits. Also, is there any ranking or preference for entries that could fit into two or more categories, ie an online flash game could be in Web (W) or Games (G)? Thanks--Gay Cdn (talk) (email) (Contr.) 13:32, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The policy which created these categories[edit]

Is Wikipedia:AfD categories. (I'm assuming people will wander into this talk page wondering where these categories have come from). Should the policy be linked from the main category page? --Xyzzyplugh 13:35, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Medicine, psychology, etc.[edit]

Needs a letter: quite broad. Please assign, who is skilled here. The closest match is "T Science and technology", but fits poorly `'mikka 02:29, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You can propose a new category at Wikipedia talk:AfD categories. It may have been discussed before there. –Pomte 04:18, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple Catagories[edit]

The code permits multiple sorting templates by duplicating the REMOVE WHEN CLOSING template. Is there a circumstance that this is good for? Or is it simply a side-effect of the way we use templates? The only thing I could think of would be an article like "Coverage of the 2008 Election", which (ignoring the fact that it would likely not be up for deletion) would fit M - Media and S - Society. I don't know if multiple catagories would matter elsewhere, but maybe I'm missing something? ZZ Claims ~ Evidence 03:41, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Answered on Wikipedia talk:AfD categories. --ais523 09:51, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
Saw it. Thanks again! ZZ Claims ~ Evidence 13:22, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

AfD Tracker by Category[edit]

AfDBot has been approved for operation. the bot generates lists of AfD cases by date and by category. I have transcluded the category list here for reference. Special thanks to ST47, who coded and will run the bot. Cats where the open case count is less than the total case count indicate that one or more closed AfDs still have a REMOVE WHEN CLOSING template, which keeps them in the category. ZZ Claims ~ Evidence 00:40, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I only noticed this now. Yesterday, I went through Special:Whatlinkshere on that template to find old unlisted AfDs. The table at the top of this page doesn't seem particularly useful for locating them. –Pomte 23:32, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Cool, but where's the list by dates for categories? Is that available. I'd like to just be able to monitor the AfDs for Music and have that listed in a way I can keep track of. For that matter, can we maybe consider splitting Music off since there's a often a couple hundred entries in this category? Thanks —Torc. (Talk.) 22:33, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal - new category for news and events[edit]

I believe there short be a new sorting category for NEWS AND EVENTS. The reason is that many articles on news and events of questionable notability get proposed for deletion. These debates get placed into virtually all of the existing categories. For example, 2009 Never Sleep Again tour is in music, Serbian war crimes is in society topics, and 1965 Oaxaca earthquake is in places and transportation. I have seen a lot more, and these examples are simply those currently going on. Many of them end up in Indiscernible or unclassifiable topic, Nominator unsure of category, or Debate not yet sorted. There is actually a notability guideline for events. The bottom line - news and events are fairly common and distinct enough to have their own sorting category. Sebwite (talk) 00:20, 22 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's too broad. The problem is that news is inherently temporal. News becomes not news simply by the passage of time. And categorizing something as news calls for a conclusion that is the purview of the AfD itself; labelling something as news can be tantamount to concluding that it should be deleted per WP:NOTNEWS. Most articles about intangibles in Wikipedia are either concepts or events, so it's really not helpful categorizing by that either. --Bsherr (talk) 15:29, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No on-screen "Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/"?[edit]

Would it be possible for the articles which have been AfD'd, to appear on screen with just their name without the preceding "Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/" prefix. It would make checking the list very much simpler and easier on the eye.

By the way, the Relisted category contains four sub-pages of users where the sub-page name starts AfD and I doubt that they are really up for deletion. Jpacobb (talk) 18:40, 5 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Closed debates[edit]

This is a collection of all currently unclosed Afd debates

I find the name of this category misleading. Even closed debates are still debates. Shouldn't this actually be Category:open AfD debates and we should have a corresponding Category:closed AfD debates to put them in after they're closed? Ranze (talk) 21:26, 24 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Category for terrorist attacks[edit]

Can someone tell me what category I should put articles dealing with terrorist attacks? None of the categories shown seem to apply. I have been putting them in "Society topics", but that just seems wrong. Kingsindian  13:16, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Unless it's actual hardware (tanks, guns, etc, under T for tech) or defense contractors (O - organizations and corporations), I've usually put military and terrorism topics under society, since it ties back to politics and government which ties it to society. None of the other categories seemed to fit, and it doesn't make sense to have a separate category for "War" and the like. Remember also, these are broad strokes categories. Thanks for helping out.
