Is Google Maps a reliable source for coords?[edit]

It appears that if you go to Google Maps, right-click on the map and select "What's here" it will give you the coordinates - apparently (according to our article) as WGS 84, which is what the {{coord}} template uses. Google Maps also has a "LatLng Marker" feature which will give the coords as a tooltip. Is Google Maps sufficiently reliable for us to use it as the sole source of coords, or do we need to confirm the value by other means? I check a couple of locations - Google Maps vs Wikipedia - including one that I had personally determined with my GPS navigation device, and they were reasonably close. Admittedly, I was only checking that my interpretation of the coordinates was correct, rather than that they were accurate. If Google Maps is deemed sufficiently reliable, it makes it very easy for anyone to put coordinates into articles, without having to have a GPS unit or even to go there. When you attempt to expand the sub-category "Articles missing geocoordinate data by country", it only shows the first 200 (of 222) sub-categories. How can this be split into two groups (A–M, N–Z) so they can all be displayed here instead of having to go to the sub-page? —[AlanM1(talk)]— 00:11, 16 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Large items or items with components[edit]

A state is easy to pin the central part. A railway line ? It has it's parts and they'd have coords. Do lines need coords?
A large area, also defunct, Greta Army Camp, if I found it do I tag the centre? is the 'centre' identifiable after selling off? the front gate? --Dave Rave (talk) 06:57, 25 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
