Shouldn't this be at Category:canids? Canine refers to members of the subfamily Caninae (such as the genus Canis and its close relatives). Canids are all members of the family Canidae. --Aranae 03:00, Jun 17, 2005 (UTC)

I agree; Canids should refer to Canidae and Canines to Caninae. The category should be renamed for the sake of accuracy. --Arny 16:39, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yup, there's at least one non-canine (Borophagus, member of subfamily Borophaginae), in the category. P.S. Names of mammal (sub)families (for example Canidae, Caninae) are mostly not written in italics. Ucucha (talk) 18:22, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the observation, I merely wanted to emphasize the words, standard style nonwithstanding. :) Anyway, I guess all of us agreeing on canines vs. canids issue could try and help correcting this mistake. --Arny 21:14, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is tricky. Strickly speaking taxonomically yes, but the more casual definition of the word canine is defined by Webster as "of or relating to dogs or to the family Canidae including the canids." So are we writing Wiki articles for taxonomists or for the everyday user who doesn't delineate the category in such a precise taxonomical sense? Valich 00:17, 17 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
