You should know that I know for a fact that the Duke-UNC rivalry was very much alive and healthy in not only football but lacrosse in the war years of World War II. I attended Duke from mid 1944 to winter 1947-48 and can attest to this. The bonfires we lit before the "Carolina game" were beauties as were the long snaking files from Duke campus to downtown Durham. Basketball was not so pronounced in those days but became paramount after WWII and the rivalry of course had to spill over. The colors change on the universities' papers' mastheads started in the fall of '45 to my recollection.
