The top category "Catholic" is for all churches in the catholic tradition, both those in communion with the Holy See and those not in communion with the Holy See but who nevertheless claim to be in the tradition. Laurel Lodged (talk) 11:23, 14 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Says who, in what source, please? Chicbyaccident (talk) 11:39, 14 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Pinging you guys as you've been involved in these discussions a lot. @Fayenatic london:, @Marcocapelle:, @Elizium23:, @Tavix: Is it my imagination or does such a policy exist? Laurel Lodged (talk) 12:17, 14 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Since "Catholic" can mean different things by context, this is not a matter of it having one "real" meaning. It is a matter of how the category tree is designed to work.
If we had Category:Catholicism that was only for the one sub-cat Category:Catholic Church. Then it would make no sense to have a Category:Catholicism at all; it would be redundant.
Likewise, if a category was only for the church buildings of the Category:Catholic Church, then one would expect it to be named either Category:Catholic Church buildings or maybe Category:Catholic Church church buildings. This is especially the case since elsewhere the category tree, "Catholic" without "Church " means the broader Catholicism. tahc chat 20:42, 14 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • By common sense I would assume that Catholic generally has a broad meaning (referring to Catholicism) unless it is clear from the context that a narrow meaning is meant (referring to Catholic Church). Marcocapelle (talk) 22:07, 14 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Au contraire, Catholic redirects to Catholic Church. Chicbyaccident (talk)

Consensus on Wikipedia on groupings of Christian denominations

[edit]

I opened a discussion on groupings in Christianity, of which there currently seems to lack a consensus on Wikipedia. The discussion might be of interest for followers of this talk page, including the discussion above. Please see: Talk:Christianity#Denominations.
