Inclusion criteria[edit]

This category currently does not state what its inclusion criteria are and hence the distinction between this and Category:Military equipment by period may not be clear. We should not categorize articles about mass-produced items (weapons, vehicles etc) by what wars they have been used in as this could lead to some articles (e.g. Mosin–Nagant, bayonet) being in dozens of such categories which would not be a WP:DEFINING characteristic. A number of categories that were categorizing mass-produced items by their usage have been deleted (example CFD). The equipment used in a particular conflict can be recorded in a list article. The by-war category tree may be appropriate for articles that are specifically about the use of equipment in a particular war (e.g. Landmines_in_the_Vietnam_War) and articles about individual items (e.g. ships) that are notable for involvement in a particular war (e.g. Amiens_Gun). I propose changing the text of this category to say:

This category is for articles about the use of military equipment in a particular war (e.g. an article that is a list of equipment used in a war) and articles about an individual item (e.g. a ship) that is notable for service in a war. This category should not contain articles about mass-produced items (e.g. most weapons, vehicles) - such articles should be categorized by the period in which they were introduced into service - i.e. in a category below Category:Military equipment by period.
