Mobile and Wireless are used interchangably. I prefer Mobile :), but I created both categories just in case. We need a real cleanup of the various categories related to cell phones. Mathiastck 20:48, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Mobile technology"?[edit]

Two quick questions:

  1. I looked up "mobile technology" seeking basically what I ultimately found with this category, but I got here in a roundabout way. Is "mobile technology" common enough to get a page w/ redirect here? I would never have thought to search "mobile" just like that - too generic IMO.
  2. How about a lead article for the category under this title? (Presumably one exists under another title?). --A12n 22:26, 26 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sure it's worth setting up a redirect for mobile technology . It doesn't take much justification to set up a redirect. I thought the lead article was Mobile Phone. Mathiastck 18:14, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Merge[edit]

Mobile and Mobile Telephony should be merged. Category:Mobile, and Category: Mobile Telephony Standards should be merged.

Advanced Telephony is a term that atual has some utility, a real definition, although I don't see it yet in wikipedia. Mathiastck 03:39, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Edit: Just added ":" to cats above. – Leo Laursen –   13:07, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Where does this category belong?[edit]

This is a parent category for mobile telephony, mobile computing, and miscellaneous portable electronic devices, systems, and networks.

It is currently part of three categories:

  1. Category:Java device platform – I don't see why "Mobile" should be there.
  2. Category:Information appliancesInformation appliance lists Smartphone and Personal digital assistant as examples. This tells me that the two cats are on the same level, with some overlap.
  3. Category:Telephony − "Mobile telephony" is also there. It seems obvious that "Mobile telephony" belongs to both "Mobile" and "Telephony". Again mobile seems to be on the same level with some overlap.

So where does this category belong in the existing tree? – Leo Laursen –   13:07, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it says so, thus implying three child cats, but there are only two of them, which are not both entirely relevant. Meanwhile this cat contains many articles that clearly belong to cellphones or other narrower cats. And then there's "Wireless" which in theory would merely mean something without wires, but is treated as synonymous with "Radio" whose cat is much smaller but not with systematically different articles except where "Wireless" is being treated as synomymous with either cellphones or mobility. Frankly, all these categories are a tangled mess which ought to be unsnarled. Where to start, I don't know. Maybe the start can be with your suggestion of establishing a clear logical separation of cats, in advance of moving the articles into appropriate ones. Last year I poked around among the trees and threw up my hands in despair since it is far more than a question of one, two or five cats being misplaced, overpopulated, redundant or otherwise awry.
