Rename[edit]

Category:Mythology of the indigenous peoples of North America is far preferable, or Category:Indigenous mythologies of North America, though that title could take in Mormon mythology as well as pop culture, huh? but this one's "not acceptable"; I wouldn't feel comfortable putting the various mythology cats of the Skwxwu7mesh, Haida, Nuu-chah-nulth in it, nor the Inuit etc....Skookum1 (talk) 17:40, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it appears no one's listening, I'll re-post this on the main Talk:NorthAmNative page but just to advise I've removed this cat from Canadian-space articles as it's entirely inappropriate; I'll rephrase what I said above: category is mis-named and should be "Mythology of the indigenous peoples of North America" as "Native American" is a misnomer for Canadian and Mexican peoples.Skookum1 (talk) 00:07, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How about "Category:Mythologies of indigenous peoples of North America" (plural, not singular)? Also, would it be worth our while to have a "See also" to similar categories for Meso-america and South America... if such categories exist? CJLippert (talk) 14:59, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'd go with that - the plural - but I would prefer to see Category:Mythologies of the indigenous peoples of North America .... "of the indigenous peoples"....just a stickler for grammar even in cat-names; "feels odd" without it. Yeah and see alsos for Meso-America and South America; where to draw the North America/Meso-America line is an issueas ostensibly Meso-American civilizations/people include the Purepechua (Tarascan) as well as Aztec, Zapotecx, Mixtec; in geography terms the "boundary" is the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, i.e. with Central America, but "Meso-America" means something different.....Skookum1 (talk) 15:24, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

We have been through this many times before: indigenous peoples is cumbersome but the general compromise. But Native American is not a misnomer for Canadians and Mexicans (or Central and South Americans) - it is just the American English term. It is American as in 'the Americas', not as in 'United States of America'. Rmhermen (talk) 17:52, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
