Outsider art is not a movement

[edit]

Wikipedia consistently calls Outsider art an art movement. This is misinformation that is not supported by any definition of art movement or any inquiry into outsider art. An art movement requires stylistic or philosophical similarity and trend. The artists themselves have to be aware of one another. Outsider art is by definition about being outside of any artistic style or practice.

Outsider Artists can have a massive variety of styles and mediums. Some outsider artists have more in common with insider artists and mainstream cultural products than other Outsiders. There is maybe more stylistic diversity in outsider art than in insider art, that's why people are interested in it in the first place.

Outsider Art is not a movement, it is a phenomenon. The term refers to artists who exist outside of artistic education and socially conventional success. I think this is a product of Wikipedia's weakness and over-reliance on terms referring to art movements/genres.

I want to to change Wikipedia pages which call it a movement. And I want to add a section on the large amount of criticism of the term Outsider Art to the page itself.
