Change to definition[edit]

There does not seem to have been any attempt to achieve a consensus on this change to the category definition. It is a very contentious change. If it is required - and I am minded to challenge any such assertion - it needs to be accompanied by category renaming. Can we discuss such changes before they happen please? There seems to be a more serious issue here. What defines a Port and what defines a city. Because for me Edithburgh is neither. It is a veery small township with a jetty which is used for recreational fishing. So how is a port city defined? Frelke 20:40, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Agree. If we need a category for "cities and towns that have a port" (probably most of all the coastal settlements on Earth) then we should ask why?! This is not thought out at all. Are Howth, Dun Laoghaire separate "cities"? Does Bullock Harbour make Dalkey a "city or town"? Belview, a port with no city? (Sarah777 20:47, 2 July 2007 (UTC))[reply]

my intent[edit]

I saw there were two categories involved. Category:Port cities and Category:Ports and harbours. I saw from the definition of Ports and Harbors that this was for articles on port infrastructure (not port cities or towns) and for harbors (natural or man-made) (again, not harbor cities or towns). Most port articles have the name 'port' in them; most harbor articles have the word 'harbor' in them; but it is article content that counts most. I could see that many articles in the 'ports and harbors' category were not ports or harbors but just about the cities (and yes, towns) that had ports. So I moved those articles to the port cities categories. As towns were included (both before and after my changes), I added towns to the category definition for accuracy. I did not realize any one would be offended with this. As far as whether WP needs/wants to have categories that include 'port towns', I have no opinion. If these towns do not belong in the 'port cities' category, just delete the category from the article and the problem is solved. I do note that some countries do not have legal distinctions between cities and towns and whether a place is called a city or town is just local usage. Thanks Hmains 02:44, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. I follow your reasoning. Maybe just excluding articles about places with ports (as distinct from ports and harbours per se) from the category 'Category:Ports and harbours' would be simpler? (Sarah777 06:49, 3 July 2007 (UTC))[reply]
